As do we; but like AED, it is usually broth, soups, and such...which is done on top. We also boil a kettle of water instead of heating it up on one of our propane stove burners. But the obvious main task is generating heat to warm up the house.
We have a free standing wood stove and have cooked on it. Fried eggs and bacon, soups, boil water. Some people can roast potatoes when embers low inside or even bake bread. Our friends bought a special wood stove that said you could cook on it. It had a special covering top. But when they tried, it didn’t get hot enough. They figured it was a gimmick. Free standing wood stove works just fine for us. We also have a generator hooked up to the house that provides with appliances and well pump. We run the generator every 3 months to make sure it works well.
Well, we're getting hammered today; out shoveling. We have 18 inches on the level and it is still coming down. Two Masses this evening. Thank goodness the town plows have been busy clearing the roads, and we do have arrangements for our driveway to be plowed out if it snows over 3 inches of snow. They'll be by at 3 pm. Winter in Pulaski! Poor Geralyn, now that I'm older, she gets worried about me shoveling heavy snow from the house over to our detached garage. But she had to go on the back metal roof via an upstairs window to shovel snow off around the vent pipe coming up from the first floor bathroom. If forgotten, deep snow on metal roofs (when warmed by the sun), lets loose all at once and can take the vent pipe with it (It's happened once). Metal roofs are also slippery so I make sure to tie a rope around her waist secured to a bedpost!
Oh my gosh you sound like us! Coping with winter and metal roofs and getting plowed out in time. I had a close friend in college from Pukaski and she told winter tales!!! You are the epicenter of Stormville.
Pulaski can get a lot, but the Tug Hill 15 miles east of us is already 40 inches more in accumulation for the season than us. Pretty as it is, you couldn't pay me to live on the Tug Hill.
