Why You Should wear the Veil: (A Guidebook for Catholic Women)

My memory of the past practices are the same....I miss them. Holiness has left our church in so many ways.
We need to try to restore it...at least on a personal level.
This is part of the gaining attraction to the Latin rite...it has all of what the NO lacks.

 

It’s hard to watch our church dissolve the traditional practices, mired in abuse scandals and confuse the faithful with doctrinal issues. It is a challenge, but we must fight for OUR faith. It belongs to us. It is the one true faith and God will not let it fail. We may become small, but we will survive. Pray for those who are leaving. I spent the evening trying to bring a x catholic back...little success. In need of God’s grace. Some people just can’t take what’s going on any longer....and that’s just what Satan wants....he wants them to leave. Satan is having some temporary victories now, but he’s not going to win the final battle. God wins!

And the church never officially stopped the practice of covering the head..it resulted from confusion and the other changes after Vatican II. Everyone did what they wanted. No One corrected it. Big surprise. How our church has gone downhill since Vatican II....it’s so sad.

Saints all around us

The anonymous lady who wrote this book (I don't really like people being anonymous..but anyway) comes from such an interesting background. She is an American, form a very devout Traditional Catholic background...her grandparents and great grandparents being particularly special. Her grandmother who was blind was cured through the intercession of St Padre Pio.

Anyway she entirely lost the Faith and ceased to practice her religion, went to England and lived with a man who was also an unbeliever. They got a Civil Marriage although he had been married before.

A miscarriage led her back to the Faith. Eventually her husband too converted and became Catholic and they moved back to the States..to..I think California. Lucky them.

She says she was inspired to wear the Veil at first not because she was Traditionalist but because she felt God calling her to do so and said it was very, very difficult to do so. She was the only one in Church doing so and she was afraid people would think she was being precious or an odd ball.

She gives several reasons for doing so. It is the Tradition of the Church down the centuries and was Law under the old 1917 Code of Canon Law. Ladies meeting the Pope still wear the veil.

She says it is a mark of Humility. Of Modesty. It ties us back into Church Tradition. It assists prayer in avoiding distraction. Oh yes also it imitates Mary and is requested in Scripture by St Paul in Corinthians.

I think that's as far as I got.

It reminded me that when I was in Jerusalem a Jewish guy from the Temple of the Italians gave a friend his prayer shawl. I wore it several times and loved it. I am sorry we do not have prayer shawls in the Church. So I took her point about it helping prayer to keep the head covered.

I am particularly sorry that most nuns do not wear veils now; they would have been a great example.

It just came to me another reason for wearing the veil is that Western Society more and more tell us that men and women are just the same, when of course they are not.

Wearing a veil underlines that men and women are different.

 

I am also very sorry that so many nuns no longer wear a veil. For those of us who are old enough to have lived through the days when the veils disappeared, it was sad and confusing to witness this as a young child, and even after all these years it still bothers me. When their veils came off, the sisters did not appear to be quite as holy, and humble; they were no different than the rest of us. I can't even remember when I last saw a nun wearing a veil... in my neck of the woods it would be a rare sight indeed.

 

Yes, the whole thing about modern times is that everybody has to be the same on the same level. While at the same time talking all the time about choice and rights.

One conversation sticks in my mind. I happened to be driving two College Professors and their spouses out to dinner. One of the Professors looked out the window at the students on Campus and she said,

'It's strange about students, they are all so proud of being individuals with their own opinions and yet they all dress the same in jeans and t- shirts'.

This is the mark of our times, that we all claim to be individuals while really we are all rushing to be the same.

At the Easter Vigil the Parish Priest came out before the Liturgy wearing a t shirt and jeans. I just felt sad.

 

You know young people are not put of the Faith by the fact that we are not up to date and Modern, as many of our Bishops and Cardinals and even our present Pope might think, no the reason they are put of is that we are yet more of the same old same old. We are just the same old shade of jeans blue as everything else around us. We blend in.

What would really make us attractive would be if we had two thousand years of a lived tradition. Not if we modernise to, 'Keep ourselves relevant and modern'. Part of the reason we are dying in the West is we trying all the time to be up to date. They turn our Churches into Bowling Alleys. They throw our scuplted marble and replace them with coffee tables. We bore people to death with this. Wearing something like the veil tunes us into two thousand years of history. A living river. What could be more vibrant and interesting? Yet our Bishops want us to wear jeans.

I hear this all the time in the radio when Ministers and priests preach the morning talk. They are striving so hard to catch attention and be relevant they become like everyone else. They bore because they strive so earnestly not to bore. They bore because they are so modern they talk the same talk as everyone else.

But the most interesting thing of all is not to be modern and up to date. Just to be Christ to the Christless. Simply to pray and be holy.



TO be truly and authentically Catholic , by its very nature is to be different.

WE HAVE TWO THOUSAND YEARS OF HISTORY AND TRADITION BEHIND US. 20 CENTURIES OF LEARNED WISDOM. WHY SHOULD THAT BE A BAD THING WE RUSH TO PUSH IN A DUMPSTER?

 

I am old enough to recall the days when no woman would enter a Church without a head covering of some kind. In the poor, northern area of the UK in which I lived it was usually just a headscarf but some wore lace mantillas especially bought for use in church. I'll leave you to guess when things changed, nothing officially said as far as I know in the output of Vat II merely another manifestation of the 'relaxations' that have now become unstoppable and extreme (sins that we were told 'called out to heaven for vengeance' being given a nod and a wink at the very highest places in the Church). God bless those (very few) experts who have called this Pope out for the undoubted heresies committed.

 

I remember wanting to stop in a church for a visit to the Blessed Sacrament and I put a Kleenex on my head. I was not the only one to do that in extremis

Well I finished the little book. It was not so much a book as a little pamphlet and only took a few minutes really. I am not complaining as it was free.

Still I enjoyed reading it as I learned a few things on the topic and off the precise topic. Two more points she makes which I think is true. Wearing the veil and dressing modestly draws so heavily on a Marian Spirituality. In other words if we follow Mary we will naturally be drawn to dress and look like her. We become what we love.

This reminds me of a lady who used to visit the monastery and who was I believe a saint and a mystic. Not like a saint, I mean a real honest to goodness saint. Someone who could very easily be raised to the altars of the Church.. One of the things about her that really drew my attention was her lived likeness to Our Lady. ..and she was still quite young, I think maybe in her 30's. But to look at her was to see Our Lady. Really I could not help having a little stare when she went by. I only really got to talk to her the once. I was a little surprised by how direct and firm she was, I was expecting maybe soft and gentle but I would say she was tough, very,very honest. I would say she would not be afraid to challenge; a bit of a warrior. I liked that. But to see her was to see Mary. I cannot really think of a greater compliment a woman can be given.

Another thing the author said was how much the world has turned against the Church. How right she is. Type in the word, 'Catholic' , into utube or Google and see what you get. They come out of the cracks in the floor to attack us from everywhere, Atheists, red neck Protestants, Liberals, nuts, Socialists..you name it. But the very,very worst are own people. The Modernist Catholics who eat the Faith from within.

The best way to survive is not to go with the tide but to go directly against it. To rebel by going back to Tradition rather than forsaking it. By being culturally defiant. By making a stand.

It seems to me for women wearing a veil might be a small start. I will not start wearing one myself as it wouldn't fit and I am afraid it would scare the dogs and they might bite me.

I suppose one would have to be tough to be a saint, I think they all carry a heavy cross. I agree with you, we need to return to our Catholic traditions, and I believe God will see to it to save our Church.
