I have what I call a Tome, the Lord of the Rings, with all the footnotes of Tolkein. It explains all the history of the elves and characters. In it he explains the name Samwise is not from Judeac/Christian heritage, but from old English meaning Village idiot. In the book, Tokein gives the simple character of Sam so many wise sayings, which in the movie the lines are given to other characters. In the end, one of the great elves waits long years for Sam to raise his family and then Sam goes to the elf and the last ring bearer{as the elves call Sam} leaves with him on the last ship of the elves to leave middle earth to go to the island of the elves. As Frodo said without his Sam he couldn't have done it.
