An interesting and very important article. Bishop Schneider seems to be saying that Cardinal Burke was incorrect when he said that a Pope pronouncing heresy loses his office. This would make logical sense because who could say exactly when a Pope became a heretic and when the office was lost.

    Hmmm...much to ponder.
If this is correct then it seems we have no recourse and just have to lump it.

You are both blessed that your grandchildren are baptized. Two of mine are not. It is a deep grief.

I read a little about this online. It boils down to your hands being tied, and it is truly awful. Only prayers, and only Blessed Mother can help.

Yes, sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. I would have done the same. Good for you!

Bishop Schneider does something very fascinating toward the end of his long letter. He highlights the fact that popes in the last 110 years have made what he considers arbitrary and questionable changes not only in doctrine, what we would call lex credendi (Pope Francis), but also in liturgy, including the breviary, what we would call lex orandi(Pius X, Pius XII, Paul VI).

Whether he was intentional or not, I think by so doing, he is positioning himself as a defender, not just of traditionalists (who often point to the two "P" popes as heroes), but even more particularly of orthodoxy. Because of this no person in the Vatican can accuse him of favoring any particular segment or group within the universal Church.

He even indirectly criticized the recent addition of Joseph into the Canon of the Holy Mass by mentioning an anecdote about Pius IX:

"Against this background remains the impressive and thought-provoking episode narrated in the life of Pope Pius IX, who upon the request of a group of bishops to make a slight change in the Canon of the Mass (introducing the name of Saint Joseph), answered: “I cannot do this. I am only the Pope!”

I'm very impressed! He is humble in that he is not fearful of alienating anyone, such is his love of truth!:ROFLMAO::love:

Safe in the Barque of Peter!

Surely Bishop Schneider and the Dubia Cardinals among others are in contact with each other and hopefully acting in concert. I am wondering if this letter From Bishop Schneider is part of a preparatory phase for the deliverance of the Formal Correction.

    From the article:

As practical measures, Bishop Schneider suggests the following:

    • A pope cannot be deposed in whatsoever form and for whatever reason, not even for the reason of heresy.
    • Every newly elected pope on entering upon his office is obliged in virtue of his ministry as the supreme teacher of the Church to take the oath of protecting the entire flock of Christ from the dangers of heresies and to avoid in his words and deeds any appearance of heresy in compliance with his duty of strengthening in faith all the Shepherds and the faithful.
    • A pope who is spreading obvious theological errors or heresies or helping in the spread of heresies by his actions and omissions should be obligatorily corrected in a fraternal and private form by the Dean of the College of Cardinals.
    • After unsuccessful private corrections, the Dean of the College of Cardinals is obliged to make his correction public.
    • Together with the public correction, the Dean of the College of Cardinals must make an appeal for prayer for the pope that he may regain the strength to confirm unambiguously the entire Church in the Faith.
    • At the same time the Dean of the College of Cardinals should publish a formula of a Profession of Faith, in which there would be rejected the theological errors that the pope teaches or tolerates (without necessarily naming the pope).
    • If the Dean of the College of Cardinals should omit or fail to make the correction, the appeal to prayer, and the publication of a Profession of Faith, any cardinal, bishop or a group of bishops should do this and, if even the cardinals and bishops omit or fail to do this, any member of the Catholic faithful or any group of Catholic faithful should do this.
    • The Dean of the College of Cardinals or a cardinal, or a bishop or a group of bishops, or a faithful Catholic or a group of Catholic faithful who made the correction, appeal to prayer, and the publication of the Profession of Faith cannot be subjected to any canonical sanctions or penalties or accused of disrespect towards the pope for this reason.

God Bless Bishop Schneider for taking the time to address this issue and focus the lay folk with guidance and reassurance that the Church is much stronger than the brief reign of any Pope.

Father Hunwicke is quite learned on this subject. He is adamant that Pius IX introduced the doctrine of Papal Infallibility, not to inflate the powers of the pope, but to limit them. That humble comment would seem to support that interpretation.

I have thought for a while that Pius X might have erred tactically, but with the best of intentions, when he encouraged people to take Holy Communion more often. The consequences are there for us today. Familiarity often does breed contempt.

And of course the notorious Bugnini was a protege of Pius XII.

It's all quite antidotal for uberpapalism.
