Of course Jesus could be beardless. Maybe she saw the teenager Jesus, or the child Jesus. Mother Teresa saw the face of Jesus in the sick and dying. And he is beautiful, indeed.

    Just noticed this thread.

The Holy Face of Manopello is a glorious accompaniment to the better known Shroud of Turin. I would very strongly advise any Catholic or Christian to read any of the books on the subject by veteran German journalist, Paul Badde.

Badde makes a profound linkage between both the Veil and the Shroud and the two cloths on the floor of Christ's empty tomb, as mentioned by eye-witness John in his Gospel. He also links them to the usage of linen cloths in the Consecration, a practice that he reckons existed from the very beginning.

Like the Shroud, the image on the Veil is scientifically inexplicable, but it is the face of the Risen Christ, accompanied by the swelling of (I think it's) the right jaw, His having been struck violently there, as also visible in the image on the Shroud.

Badde also points out the strong resemblance between the image of the face of Christ on the Veil with the representations of Christ in Christian Art in the earliest times. They knew what He looked like from the image and the image itself was originally confirmed by those who knew what He looked like face-to-face.

The survival in such states of intactness of these very delicate cloths is itself extremely improbable. We are very fortunate to retain such inspirations.

P.S. : Could somebody alter the title of this thread?

The Holy Veil is being misrepresented. If someone considers it a 'hoax', let us at least hear a valid argument.

It’s worth reading the link to the “hoax”.

It goes to considerable lengths to defend the traditional Holy Face devotion, but calls a relatively recent permutation of the image itself a hoax, not the original.

Thanks for enlightening me. Shows the hazards of coming in late and unbriefed. Still, should the inverted commas in the title be on the word 'hoax' and not surrounding the Holy Face of Manopello, in case there are other eejits like me? Or perhaps no inverted commas at all?

I would pay no attention to theses critics, as said earlier in the thread, this is just a webpage.

Some of these outfits are way out. Judge for oneself.... always.

On reading further, I see no contradiction. The cloth in the Vatican being the cloth with which Veronica wiped the face of Jesus does not imply that the one in Manopello is not the cloth which covered His face in the tomb. They would have to be two separate cloths.

None other than Pope Benedict himself visited Manopello, as pope, in spite of opposition. There are claims in this criticism of the relic that there have been no miracles. Apart from the fact that the little cloth has been unknown for centuries, I wonder if this is true.

There seems an element of reliquary possessiveness about much of this. There was much scoffing about the Shroud of Turin until 'science' broke its teeth off it in its attempt to disprove it. There seem to be similar elements about the Veil of Manopello. Of course, these are not articles of faith, but I have been impressed by Badde and he certainly seems to be writing in good faith and undeserving of the tone directed upon him in that critique. The usage of the word 'hoax' in the context of his proposals seems wrong. I have read two of his books on the subject and he seem no Indiana Jones in search of fame and fortune, but an orthodox Catholic, in awe of his Lord.

It seems to me possible that the Church is in possession of three cloths, one of Christ in His human lifetime, one of Him dead and one of Him Resurrected. Of the three, the last is by far the most scandalous to His enemies. A difficult-to-inauthenticate image of Christ and Him dead still allows the masons to dismiss Him as a great teacher, unjustly killed by the state-a sort of revolutionary. An image of Him Resurrected, True God and True Man, is something else entirely. This doesn't prove the Veil genuine, but it deserves at least as much patience and research as has been afforded the Shroud and which should also be applied to the cloth in the Vatican.

Nonetheless, He was generous to those of the generation that were good and faithful and He has continued to be.

I have no truck with sedevacantists, but when I read the Southern Poverty Law Centre being deployed against them, I can't but feel a certain sympathy.

Do angels have beards, or do they shave? Does anyone in Heaven have a beard? :)

The lady said she saw Jesus, not the Child Jesus, or even the Teen Jesus. Jesus as he wanted to be seen.

Sedevacantism may well put souls into danger actually, good to slam the SPLC but I was just pointing out who the Holy Family Monastery is and using them as an example of a group we should all probably stay away from.

Of course, and you're completely right and I should have made that clear. There's more danger from an error, even if possibly well-intentioned, that still retains a certain amount of truth, than from a blatant one that's obviously wicked. I just couldn't resist a dig at the SPLC!
