New Donetsk Exarch of UGCC Installed in Zaporizhzhia
On November 21, 2024, the enthronement of the new ruling bishop of the Donetsk Exarchate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Bishop Maksym Ryabukha, was held in the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Zaporizhzhia.


The solemn service on the Feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was led by the Father and Head of the UGCC, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, in concelebration with the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas, Bishop Stepan Meniok, Bishop Maksym Ryabukha and many bishops and priests. Metropolitan Volodymyr Viytyshyn of Ivano-Frankivsk, Greek Catholic Bishop Teodor Matsapula of Mukachevo, UGCC bishops from all over Ukraine, and bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine arrived in Zaporizhzhia. Bishops of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine also attended the service.



During the Liturgy, Bishop Andriy Khimyak, Secretary of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, read the Patriarchal Decree on the naming of Bishop Maksym Ryabukha as Exarch of the Supreme Archbishopric of the Donetsk Exarchate of the UGCC.

In the decree, the Head of the Church noted that “in view of reaching the canonical age of 75 years, the resignation of His Eminence Bishop Stepan Meniok from the government of the Exarch of the Donetsk Exarchate was accepted. Our dear brother in Christ, Bishop Stepan, served sacrificially in this exarchate for many years, gaining respect among the clergy, monastics and laity. Half of the years of his ministry were spent during the occupation of the exarchate and his forced expulsion from the cathedral church in Donetsk.”

“Taking into account the spiritual needs and the good of the faithful of our Church along with the vacancy of this throne, the UGCC Synod of Bishops elected You to the office of Exarch of the Donetsk Exarchate of the UGCC, and we, by the power vested in us, for the glory of God and the salvation of the God-loving people, name and appoint You Exarch of the Supreme Archbishopric of Donetsk Exarchate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church,” the document reads.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav: Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church calls for official dialogue with Orthodox Church of Ukraine


The Head of the UGCC, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, said this in an interview with Radio Liberty.

“We really want to begin this dialogue. And from the first moment of the unification council (of the OCU), which took place in St. Sophia, we have been seeking this communication. We were the first to proffer our hand. We want to hold dialogue, and we are working on it,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

“The so-called mixed Orthodox-Catholic theological commission has existed for many years between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church, which has been conducting this ecumenical dialogue, trying to decide whether to harmonize positions on a number of dogmatic and canonical issues. Many of these agreements are not even known in Ukraine,” adds the Head of the UGCC.

He expressed his understanding that “the unification of the Orthodox in Ukraine” now may be the OCU's priority.

“It is very important that the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which is in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate today, is gradually recognized by all other Local Orthodox Churches. I think this is very important for our Orthodox brothers,” His Beatitude Sviatoslav emphasized.

In December 2022, the heads of the UGCC and the OCU discussed the possibility of creating a joint working group to study the reform of the church calendar. This initiative is aimed at coordinating the transition to a new calendar in the context of preparations for the commemoration of the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, which will be celebrated in 2025.

In October 2024, His Beatitude Sviatoslav paid an official visit to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. They discussed issues of ecumenical dialogue and cooperation. As a manifestation of the ecumenical dialogue, on December 24, 2024, the seminarians of the UGCC and the OCU recorded a joint carol, “A New Joy Has Come!” for the first time.

Those who know what is at stake here easily realize that Vladimir Putin's Christmas Day terrorist attack on civilian targets in Ukraine did not happen randomly. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church recently changed the date of celebrating Christmas to the same calendar as the rest of the universal Catholic Church. And this is also happening, although more gradually, with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

 

So so disturbing.

 

Ukraine, like Russia, used to officially observe their Christmas day on January 7th according to the Julian calendar, until Kyiv passed a law in 2023 shifting the date to December 25th in line with other Western European countries.
Like every other day of this war, no doubt Ukraine will be firing some western supplied missiles or drones into Russia on their Christmas day of January 7th and vice versa. What a tragic, pointless, and totally unnecessary war.

Some excellent news amid the crisis...

Despite the eradication of Catholicism in the occupied regions of Ukraine by the Russian Putinist invaders, the number of Catholics in Ukraine has increased in last few years. In his latest video message, the leader of Ukrainian Catholics revealed that the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has reached a record 12% of followers, which corresponds to an increase of 4% compared to the last data.

I posted this on another thread but it might be more appropriate on this one (apologies for duplication).

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church has been declared illegal in occupied territories of Ukraine. It's Russian Orthodoxy or nothing for those suffering occupation. Its existence in Russia proper is tolerated at best, proselytism is not permitted and Catholic churches have to be so 'discreet' as to be invisible. The constitution favours no religion but this is totally ignored and the only churches permitted on military sites are Russian Orthodox. 30 Orthodox priests have been laicised for failing to pray for Russian victory and many more say that they do so only because they have families and would be unable to find employment if they left.

The Patriarch has expressed his astonishment and disappointment that some Catholics support a regime that suppresses Catholicism and had his own name on a hitlist when it expected to arrive in Kyiv in three days.
