I was going to post this on the La Palma thread but feel strongly this is important not to miss, as most of the long time members on here would know, I have been following earthquake activity around the globe and spaceweather for a good few years, I don't claim to be an expert in any sense of the word but something has got my attention big time today. Firstly I have been noticing large quakes over the past few days in the Indian and Pacific ridges close to Antarctic this is unusual, secondly the latest forecast from spaceweather has me sitting up and paying attention I have never ever seen a forecast like it..very very strange for sure..

    forecast below....

THE SOLAR WIND IS BLOWING: Earth is inside a stream of fast-moving (~600 km/s) solar wind, which is causing geomagnetic unrest around the poles. This is not a storm-level event. However, Arctic sky watchers should be alert for auroras after nightfall on Nov. 2nd.

The sun just hurled a storm cloud toward Earth. It launched during the early hours of Nov. 2nd, propelled by an M1.7-class solar flare in the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2891. This movie from SOHO shows the resulting CME:

Researchers call this a "halo CME" because the storm cloud apppears to form an expanding halo all the way around the sun. It's a sign that the CME is heading directly for our planet.

Estimated time of arrival: Nov. 5th. The impact could spark geomagnetic storms as strong as category G2.

The X-factor in this forecast is the possible arrival of one or more glancing-blow CMEs beginning Nov. 4th. These were emitted by departing sunspot AR2887 near the edge of the Earth strike-zone. A series of glancing blows on Nov. 4th could set the stage for stronger than expected storms on Nov. 5th.

John, what kinds of effects could this type of thing have on us? Any idea what we might expect?

Although our good earths atmosphere blocks any harmful radiation from the sun, from a medical point of view we are fine however from a technical point of view the perfect solar storm could wipe out the technology we heavily rely on especially now in this vast computerised world, if the grid goes down the impact could be huge,,, before I get bombarded by the nay sayers, I'm referring to the wonderful world of gps wifi etc not the actual electric grid, there have been improvements over the years to protect hard wire infrastructure from CME's but not all grids could cope with a powerful solar storm...to say the least we could see utter mayhem and confusion if the lights go out (y)

I’ve followed solar activity a bit for a good while too, but I’ve never heard of this.

Might this be a mini precursor to a micro nova?

I wonder if a halo CME could strip away enough of our protective magnetic field for lower class solar CMEs to have more of an effect on electronics, satellites etc. than they normally would, like two separate meteorological storm systems converging at one time and place?

    Halo CME:
A faint ring of enhanced emission seen around most or all of the edge of the occulting disk of a coronagraph. Indicative of a spatially large CME on the front side (Earthward) or back side of the Sun. The source region is usually nearer to solar central meridian than the limbs. Full halo CMEs from the front side of the Sun almost always result in geomagnetic storms at Earth, especially when accompanied by a solar proton event.

Perhaps this could save the world from the electronic vaccine passports, whilst maintaining the general electricity grid. This would be perfect.

This can't happen. Our protective magnetic field is generated by earth's rotating iron-nickel core. For comparison, our core is about 70% of the size of the moon.

[For a highly imaginative (and in my opinion, very entertaining) view of what would happen if the core stopped rotating, I refer you to the film "The Core" (Paramount, 2003)]

This magnetic field captures particles from the solar wind and helps keep too much radiation from entering the atmosphere. Frankly, hearing about this event made me wish I still had my ham radio license -- I can guarantee you there's going to be some active signals tonight in the 20, 10, and 2 meter bands! There will also be some awesome aurora displays, possibly visible south of Chicago (if you don't have a lot of clouds). It will DEFINITELY impact satellite communications, and I'll wager the astronauts in the ISS will be inside a shielded area for the duration.

  7. Well...

I have worked outside all day for decades. I can tell you in the last couple months the sun and clouds have formed incredible sights.

I have pictures of the clouds (with the sun behind) forming angels, crucifixes, etc.

Today the sky was clouded over and where the sun was behind the cloud, there was a hole in the cloud which formed a perfect circle. Also at the same time there was what looked to be a pillar of smoke reaching from the clouds to the ground. It wasn't a funnel.

Occasionally you will see strange things in the sky, but now it is becoming a daily occurrence.

I love reading these posts as I am utterly clueless about this stuff. An education. Though still not sure I grasp all that is being said .

    Latest from Spaceweather...(y)

    HERE COMES A CANNIBAL CME:
It's official. The CME heading for Earth is a cannibal. SOHO coronagraphs recorded the CME leaving the sun on Nov. 2nd following a slow-motion solar flare (M1.7) in the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2891:

Cannibal CMEs are fast coronal mass ejections that sweep up slower CMEs in front of them. Piled together, the mish-mash of CMEs contain strong magnetic fields and compressed plasmas that can do a good job sparking geomagnetic storms.

The slower CMEs, in this case, were hurled into space on Nov. 1st and 2nd by departing sunspot AR2887. NOAA analysts plugged all the plasma clouds into a computer model, and this is what they found:

The animation shows the cannibal cloud sweeping up one whole CME and a portion of another. If NOAA's model is correct, the combined CME will make first contact with our planet around 2300 UT on Nov. 3rd, with geomagnetic storms commencing on Nov. 4th.

The model also predicts a +300 km/s increase in solar wind speed and a 5-fold jump in solar wind density in the CME's wake. These conditions, if they materialize, would set the stage for geomagnetic storms as strong as category G2.

What does this mean on a practical level? Disruption of satellites? Loss of power? So strange.
God is literally shouting His warnings and they increase "like birth pangs." But in the news? Ho hum.
    Shaking my head.
