It occurs to me we will need to keep reminding ourselves of this in the days and months to come. Keep our attention on the Lord to keep at peace, As the Psalmist says:

I'm not worried about NK attacking SK, though they may do so for sleight of hand.

I'm worried about them setting up a "war" with SK and using that to cover a clandestine EMP attack on the continental USA.

All indications are that Russia helped them develop and miniaturize EMP devices and they have already launched a satellite that goes over mainland USA from a South Pole to North Pole orbit, an approach we are unable to detect.

70% of North Korea’s Submarines have Left their Bases, Can’t be Located

Dozens of N. Korean submarines left their bases at both Eastern and Western coast, and can’t be located. Military are increasing their surveillance capability to track them, it is confirmed.

That accounts for 70% of (N. Korea’s) submarine fleet, which totals 70 ships. This is the largest rate of deployment since the Korean War.

Military sources said, “This is 10 times more than their normal deployment level. Dozens of them left their bases at both coasts, and we are unable to track them.”

They said, “70% of their submarine fleet is not located. We are increasing our surveillance capability to find them.”

They suspect that the unusually high level of N. Korea’s submarine movements may be for further military provocation, and raised their level of alert.

N. Korea also more than doubled its front-line deployment of artillery power, since the high-level talks began.

The sources said, “Since the talks began, their front-line artillery power has more than doubled.”

This is typical bluff, bluster and Saber Rattling from NK. I doubt, seriously, if the US Navy and Allies don't know where these subs are. If they can't find these old-n-noisy designs-n-hand me down NK subs then we really are in trouble ;-(
The sad truth is ... We are already in Big Trouble and NK might well precipitate a nasty Chain of Events in cahoots with Iran, China and/or Russia. Pray & Prepare is all that we here can do and that is nothing to disparage ... especially the Prayer Part!!

Well, assuming that Russia has not sold nuclear-powered submarines to North Korea, then they must be diesel-powered. It has been a given that diesel-electric (D/E) submarines must run on the surface to provide air for the engines, until they go into attack or stealth mode. Then they switch to battery power, where the batteries were charged by the diesel engines while on the surface. Typically the sub could only stay submerged for 24 hours, and no more than 48 hours, before needing to arise to snorkel depth to replace its air for the crew.

That was 70 years ago. America built its last diesel-electric sub back in 1948. However, that doesn't mean other nations weren't advancing the state of the art during the past 7 decades. Currently, D/E subs use lithium-ion batteries. This eliminates the problem of the batteries throwing off hydrogen, something which (for safety reasons) also limited the undersea time of the sub. New propeller designs eliminate cavitation effects and make for truly stealthy submarines. (In the late fall of 2006, a Chinese Song-class submarine surfaced within torpedo range of the Kitty Hawk off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, according to National Defense magazine.) Advances in engine design have resulted in D/E subs being able to run up to 30 days (or longer) without needing to put into port and which can stay submerged for weeks.

The long and short of it is, yeah, it's a trivial task now for a modern D/E submarine fleet to go silent and stealthy so they can't be located by satellite photo or sonar. Eventually, they will have to surface to exchange air or take on diesel fuel. Until then, though, there's no reason to expect that our satellites will be able to track them from space, or that our sonar can track them from the surface.

 

Would it be in the interests of China to allow a North Korean attack on the South or more particularly the U.S. at this time? I find it hard to see it is. If that is so, I believe that NK will do nothing.

 

China realizes that their only economic trajectory from this point forward is down. There is no population or economic growth in the west to continue to prop up their own rapidly growing economy, and their military growth and modernization desperately depends on western cash inflow to continue.

They will never recoup their loans to the west now, and they also grasp their own demographic implosion due to their one child policies and vicious population control programs.

Therefore their "use it or lose it" equation has tipped to the former. They likely won't risk a formal head on confrontation with the USA.

However they would be happy to use a troublesome and psychologically unstable puppet tyrant to inflict major, possibly irreparable harm on the USA.

If Russia provided the EMP technology then China would have plausible deniability while still clandestinely helping NK become so paranoid as to strike out against the USA with an EMP.

We are in unchartered waters and the USA is in a gravely compromised position. Take down our power grid and you take down the USA.

 

It might well be, if they can get the SK military (with the help of the US) to get rid of the NK government. China is having its own problem with refugees from NK sneaking across the border into China. Add to that the Chinese govt. may not have the NK govt. on the tight leash everyone seems to think they do. NK survives based on Chinese aid, yet China has slowly but surely been cutting it's financial ties to NK.

So you have a (possible) nuclear power on your northeast border lead by a narcissistic madman who once proclaimed that a world without North Korea did not deserve to exist, who requires a heckuva lot of your yuan to feed its people and supply it's military. The NK may be trying to blackmail China into providing more aid, i.e., we may be forced to go to war to protect ourselves from this vicious anti-Party propaganda. The Chinese govt. might find it very useful to have that madman eliminated, if the elimination could be done without loss to China and without being traced to them.

IOW, it might be to China's advantage to have SK go to war with NK if there was a reasonable chance that SK would overthrow the madman with minimal losses to China. Sure, it would mean losing a puppet state, but on the other hand, feeding all those former NK citizens would now be the responsibility of SK (and by extension the US) and the flow of refugees might slow down. The recent passage of the China–South Korea Free Trade Agreement means China could be selling a lot of food and supplies to SK to help rebuild the former NK industries.

So I think there is a good (not significant, but good) chance China would tell NK "No", and NK might just go ahead and go it alone, since they have nothing to lose; OR; China might tell NK "Yes" and then sit back while "supply problems" prevent them from providing the aid to NK to actually defend themselves.

 

One problem there: "Projection of Force." NK can't project any. IOW, they don't have a navy, air force, or space force capable of projecting any force against the USA. China can't project any naval force (but will within 5 years) excepting submarine warfare; it can't project any air force against the US (again, pending the launching of its first aircraft carrier within 5 years), it CAN project space force via missiles against the USA. EMPs require a space detonation in order to be effective, with a minimum height of 40 km (about 20 miles). So any EMP detonation directed against the US would be traced to China, since they have credible effective long distance missiles and NK doesn't.

NK has been able to detonate small (7KT) nuclear devices. It's possible they could smuggle such a device into SK and detonate it there. This would result in NK being "bombed back into the stone age" although using NON-nuclear weapons. China would stand by and not get involved and so not suffer any damage. In the end the financial damage to the US would remove it as a credible threat for the next generation and leave both China and Russia as the dominant world powers.

 

NK has put satellites into orbit over the continental USA. They launched them in a southern direction, over the South Pole, and up South America along a very narrow strip where we have no early warning radar for a missile attack.

They have done several nuclear tests. The detonation power of each test has been mocked by the west as tiny if they were nuclear devices. However, if they were nuclear EMP devices their test yields were exactly what would be expected.

Russia has testified that their scientists had been hired by NK to develop and miniaturize EMP devices.

EMP devices do not need specific targeting, they just need to explode over the mainland of its target with an altitude margin of error of several hundred miles and a location margin of error of several hundred miles.

If NK can place a satellite over the continental USA at the right altitude and location, which they have already proven they can do, all they need to accomplish is a miniaturization of their EMP device so it will fit on an intercontinental satellite missile and increase the payload capacity of that missile.

If one truly believes that cannot be done with international assistance (Russia) they're just not paying attention.

US Defenseless Against North Korean EMP Threat
The electric grid in the United States remains largely unprotected, according to a longtime adviser to Congress on national security issues.

Peter Vincent Pry told VOA he believes North Korea is ready to attempt a strike on the U.S. electric grid using an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP). Pry said North Korea practiced an EMP strike against the U.S. last year when it orbited a satellite at the optimal altitude and trajectory to carry out such an attack.

Pry is in the northern city of Minneapolis to brief the National Council of State Legislatures this week on the EMP threat. He told VOA that three U.S. states - Arizona, Maine and Virginia - have passed legislation trying to guard against a lengthy power outage following an EMP.

Pry was a member of the former Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack (2001-2008). He also is executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, a congressional advisory board dedicated to achieving protection of the United States from electromagnetic pulse and other threats.

An electromagnetic pulse (or disturbance) is a short burst of electromagnetic energy that can be natural or man-made. EMP interference generated by lightning, for example, can damage electronic equipment. At very high energy levels, an EMP can damage physical objects such as trees, buildings and aircraft.

Pry said the North Korean test last year took place over the South Pole, which he called a strategic move.

“We are blind from the south. We don’t have the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System or interceptors to protect us from the south,” said Pry.

The congressional analyst said this was done after North Korea’s third illegal nuclear test in February 2013 and after the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, threatened to strike the United States and its allies with a nuclear missile.

Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) said, “I cannot speak to the motives of the North Korean satellite experiment, but... we need to move with all deliberate speed to shore up our infrastructure.”

A couple months later, a North Korean freighter, the Chong Chon Gang, was caught attempting to move through the Panama Canal with a cargo of nuclear capable missiles on their launchers. They were hidden under thousands of bags of sugar.

This was no mistake on the part of the North Koreans, Pry told VOA. He said he believes Pyongyang was testing the United States to find out if it could traffic nuclear weapons through the Gulf of Mexico and the Panama Canal without detection. He said had the North Koreans gone the long way around South America, the U.S. never would have known what North Korea was shipping.

He said it was just by chance they were caught because no one was looking for nuclear missiles.

“We inspected the freighter not because anyone thought there were nuclear capable missiles onboard, but because this freighter is notorious for doing trade with drug cartels and terrorists, and so we were looking for illicit drugs that the freighter might be smuggling, and they found the nuclear capable missiles," said Pry.

Clarke, who is the ranking member on the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, Science and Technology, said “again, I cannot say whether it is a deliberate attempt by the North Koreans to test out or test run the capabilities of approaching the U.S." with nuclear capable missiles, but “they are looking for ways to approach the United States, and I am sure it is not for the sake of friendly trade, but to do our nation harm.”

Clarke, together with Rep. Trent Franks (R-A.Z.), tried to address the EMP threat in June 2013 when they introduced the Shield Act, which has stalled in the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

According to Pry, near the end of the Cold War, the Russians developed the technology for a super EMP. This is a class of nuclear weapon with a special design to produce a particularly powerful EMP field. He says that in 2004 a delegation of Russian generals, including two of their top EMP experts, met with the EMP commission.

“They told us proactively, ‘we have bad news. We developed this super EMP weapon, and during the post-Cold War brain drain, some of our scientists went to North Korea,'" he said.

At the time, Pry said, the Russian generals thought that within a few years, North Korea could develop a super EMP weapon.

 

Thanks for the replies to my query. I am now convinced that the world is an even more dangerous place than I had thought. This knowledge combined with a seeming anti-president in the U.S. is alarming indeed.

Nevertheless, since the U.S. owes China an incomprehensible amount of money, is it not incumbent upon the Chinese to protect their investment somewhat. We may be able to accuse the Chinese of multiple evils, but there is no evidence that, unlike our Western governments, they are insane.

I make that last point because Charlie Johnson, who commands the respect of many of us I think it is fair to say, has pointed out the shock that Putin has registered in response to the naivety of much of the Obama regime's foreign policy. Surely the same interpretation can be applied to the Chinese?

Of course, if the North Koreans are a loose cannon beyond Chinese control, all bets are off.

 

China knows the USA will never repay its debts due to its own profligate debt spending. Therefore the risk is even higher.

Indeed, and if the U.S. financial and economic status begins to turn to dust, so all hope of recouping Chinese investment goes with it. Therefore the attack may just arise when things look like they can't get much worse. Things are certainly getting ominous. North Korea seems such a pointless anachronism much like Cuba, but the Devil obviously has a plan for such literally godforsaken places.
