Yes! We definitely have lost so much brain power. If and when the internet goes down people won’t know directions to go anywhere… we won’t know how to fix anything…. We have freed up all of the memory in our brains and simply rely on asking google! Some people won’t even be able to start a fire.

How many people know how to use maps anymore? How many know what it feels like to be lost? What will happen for instance of GPS ceases, even for a short while?

Six months will bring us to the onset of winter. The Russian claim is somewhat hyperbolic, but not so much when one considers the form that the hysterical, fear-filled reaction from the media will take. The Europeans take pride in their sanctions and the 'solidarity' that it shows, but the greater effects of them are upon themselves.

Thank goodness, I've never managed to work out how to use a GPS. Sadly, my ability to operate a GPS is of a similar order to my ability to read a map! Of course, you might respond by suggesting that I resort to my natural directional abilities, but the wife says that I've the worst sense of direction of anyone she knows and is continually amazed that I keep returning home!

I imagine that Europe will be seized by protests when the cut or rationing of Russian gas takes effect, I imagine that even before winter, industries on the verge of bankruptcy will be the trigger for civil unrest.

I have to laugh DeGaulle because I could have written this post. No sense of direction at all! My map reading skills are ok I guess but I hate GPS. We used it once to go somewhere in New Hampshire here--it sent us down a dead end road!!! I am getting to the point where I don't want to deal with technology at all. Good thing some of us can still do things the old fashioned way. Youngsters have no notion of practical math or how language works or how to cook from scratch or grow our own food.:) All those old skills. If the the blackout occurs we will be invaluable because we know how to do things.

Good post. I hope I can use the skills I was taught. My husband is good at practical stuff, too.

Pope commends Cardinal’s explanation of curial reform document
In a preface to a book-length interview with Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga on the Apostolic Constitution "Praedicate evangelium," Pope Francis says the Honduran prelate and head of the Council of Cardinals “adequately unravels the meaning and itinerary of this meticulous and decisive work of revision and proposals.”

    By Christopher Wells

Pope Francis has praised Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga for a new interview in which the President of the Council of Cardinal Advisors discusses the new Apostolic Constitution Praedicate evangelium and the reform of the Roman Curia.

The Holy Father notes that the ongoing reform has its roots in the Second Vatican Council, and has been pursued by his immediate predecessors going back to Pope St Paul VI. More immediately, Pope Francis recalls that in the General Congregations prior to the Conclave that elected him, the Cardinals strongly urged that the new Pope would undertake a new reform of the Curia, a reform they saw as urgent and necessary.

That reform took a major step forward earlier this year, with the publication of the Apostolic Constitution Praedicate evangelium, which instituted significant changes to the structure and organization of the Curia. In his preface, Pope Francis commends Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga’s explanation of the meaning and goals of the Apostolic Constitution, while at the same time noting that Praedicate evangelium is simply one part – albeit a very important part – of the greater work of reform.

Structural and organizational reforms, the Pope says, “are certainly necessary, but what is really important is the renewal of people’s minds and hearts.”

"We are all called upon to do our part." - Pope Francis

The Pope points out, too, that the work of reform is a constant concern of the Church. “Laws and documents are always limited, and almost always ephemeral,” the Pope reminds us, acknowledging that as the world constantly changes, “the Church, in her constant dialogue with the world, with a firm foot in the origins and faithful to Tradition, will again adapt her life and her human structures to the changing conditions of the times.”

The interview with Cardinal Maradiaga, including the Pope’s preface, bears the title “Praedicate Evangelium: A new curia for a new time.”

I recall the days when we always had maps in our cars. I remember my grandfather, and my dad mapping out road-trips so I picked up my skills from them. I use GPS when heading to unfamiliar locations, but I always pull up the map to check my route first. We have been led astray on several occasions when the GPS decides to save you a few minutes travel time and makes a bad situation worse.
