HH, Oh thank God again today!!! I knew that this was going to be ruled on this week because I saw an update on this story on the weekend. This is wonderful news!
I agree, wonderful news - for this particular baker. However the ruling stated it was only because of the behavior of the state of Colorado towards him, that they exhibited animosity and bias towards his religious beliefs in the handling of the case. It didn’t actually change how future rulings will be made, which was a loss
Well, at least a step in the right direction, and in legal circles, has set a precedent. Glass half full
DM, EWTN is going to be discussing this later today. I am not a lawyer but I think that "we" won. The liberals may think that we want to totally discriminate against them and refuse to serve various customers but I don't believe that was the basis for this case. Like I said, I may be misunderstanding but I don't think that it would be fair for the courts to rule that people can refuse to serve others but they can state that people can refuse "to express messages or celebrate events that violate his [their] deeply held beliefs." So for example, if I was an artist and Anderson Cooper or Ellen Degneres came into my art store they could buy any painting they want but if I also painted portraits of people and they asked me to paint a wedding picture of them and their spouse(?) I can refuse to do so. Or do I have this wrong?
Just read the summary, this was not great news, basically said this is a reason to sue, but the state messed it up by being overzealous
I think it is great news. The legal system is based on legal precedent This decision is from the US Supreme Court
Thank you. I get the impression that liberal bishops talk up a storm about the poor while being very conscious of the bank balance. Maybe if the new bishop goes too far off track, there will be enough financial clout in his diocese to give him pause for thought. On second thoughts, it is California so perhaps the only financial clout is of the liberal variety? Thanks Carol. Yes, there do appear to be a few areas where people are putting the foot down. In my mind I associate Maria Bartiromo with CNN. I watch Squawk Box from time to time but if I saw her on that programme it didn't register with me. Fox news has only become available to me in the past few months. Reading her wikipedia page in your link, it says that she was educated at a rather exclusive Catholic girls' school. She's married to businessman Jonathan Steinberg. According to the NYT, a Jewish rabbi presided at their marriage ceremony in his father's home. His (now deceased) father was married about four times and two of the wives converted to Judaeism before marrying him, one of them being Italian-American was probably a Catholic. Here's a link to the wiki page (see under the heading "Family and Personal Life") https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saul_Steinberg_(businessman)
DivineMercy, I think I understand what you mean a little better after watching the EWTN segment about this tonight. There will be situations that sort of fall in between the purchase of any painting and the commissioning of a painting of a wedding portrait for a homosexual couple, for example. EWTN gave an example of a case like this tonight in which a flower shop does not want to supply flowers for a SSM ceremony. We will have to wait and see how each case is ruled on and as HH has stated this wedding cake case does provide some precedence. Regarding this flower shop case, I would say that unless they asked for a display of flowers in which it would be blatantly apparent that the flowers were for a SSM ceremony I don't believe that the court will rule in favor of the shop owner but then I also wonder why the shop owner would even be aware that the flowers are for such a wedding unless someone had stated as such or they asked for something that made it apparent. Oh boy, it can be confusing.
These are "test cases" for the LGBTQ communities and the lobby groups. They are deliberately trying to find proprietors who will likely turn them down due to religious beliefs just so they can sue them because their "rights" have been violated. I would say it would be fairly obvious to the proprietors if/when this occurs. But you are correct: maybe sometimes it would not be so apparent. The spiritual battle is on.
You know, I think it is really important to praise and thank God whenever we notice answers to prayers I know this baker is really doing some grateful praying today I think God is answering prayers right and left Sure, we are not @arrived yet Supreme Court rulings are from the highest court in the land Imagine that baker tonight! I am greatly encouraged
I have been thinking about this praise and thanksgiving aspect of worshipping God That is one of the types of prayer in the Mass The late Fr Solanus Casey had a saying : thank God ahead of time He is hopefully going to be canonized I think he is Blessed When we look to the Blessed Mother and anticipate the Triumph of Her Immaculate Heart, we are doing that
I don’t think so Holy Matrimony in the Catholic Church is a Sacrament between a man and a woman So no
Lava from fissure number 8 was flowing at a rate greater than 6 football field lengths per hour recently. 656 yards per hour is the fastest recorded lava flow advance rate for Kilauea over the past 30 days. Explosion rocks Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, sending ash 1 mile high By M.L. Nestel Jun 5, 2018 https://abcnews.go.com/US/explosion-rocks-hawaiis-kilauea-volcano-sending-ash-mile/story?id=55661514 Watch Lava flow traps residents in Hawaii, cutting off evacuation routes (please click on link above for the video) An explosion rocked Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano early Tuesday morning, spewing ash nearly a mile into the air and sparking an earthquake that registered 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The tremor occurred at around 4:30 a.m. local time, the agency reported. It was not clear if any damage was caused, but no tsunami was expected, officials said. Thousands of residents have been evacuated from the area and lava spewing from the volcano's fissures have destroyed more than 100 structures since the first eruption a month ago. Tuesday's incident didn't trigger tsunami warnings due to the small size of the earthquake. "It's not big enough," Cindi Preller, geologist and duty scientist at the Oahu office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told ABC News. Instead, tsunamis or tidal waves, become more serious threats if the size of the earthquake increases, Preller said. "Anything above 6.9 [magnitude] is our threshold," she said. On May 4, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake occurred near the south flank of Kilauea one hour after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck nearby, the U.S. Geological Survey said. That larger earthquake was caused by a more conventional "fault rupture," Wendy Stovall of the U.S. Geological Survey told ABC News. Today's quake was primarily caused by a buildup of pressure from the summit area of Kilauea. "They are a response to pressure building up beneath the pile of rubble cover the vent opening at the summit," Stovall explained. "So what we're seeing is as the pressure builds up it will be released in what appears to be an earthquake but no fault plane is rupturing." The volcano's valve is open and Kilauea is going through what Stovall called "a cycle of deflation." There have been 9,900 earthquakes since May, according to Stovall, and she estimated that number could quickly rise to 10,000. As the "deflation process" continues, more eruptions like the one today could happen, NOAA's Preller cautioned. "This could go on for months," she said. "The volcano is active and when these eruptive sequences get underway it's doing exactly as it's supposed to do, behaving as it should." **** The pink areas show the lava flow from 5/4-6/4 and the red areas are the newest lava flow from 6/4-6/5. I'm praying that everyone who needed to be evacuated has been able to do so.
