Fishing trawlers and sailing boats joined the event on open water whilst airport chapels were said to be overflowing. The ‘Różaniec do grana’’, or ‘’Rosary to the Borders’’ event was deliberately planned to coincide with the liturgical feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7th), which commemorates the landmark 1571 Battle of Lepanto in which outnumbered European forces under Pope Pius V won a decisive naval battle against the Ottoman Turks. The victory, credited with saving Europe from Islamic expansion, was attributed to the praying of the rosary by beleaguered Christian forces. Impressive crowds gathered for Mass Saturday morning, followed by processions to 4,000 border locations, each selected to be several hundred yards from the next so as to encircle the entire Polish territory in a ‘’chain of prayer.’’ In Catholic tradition, the rosary has long since been considered a spiritual weapon against evil, and a means of conversion to Christ by way of his mother, Mary. Social media accounts were soon flooded with images of the unusual event, which organizers hope will have mobilized at least one million of Poland’s predominantly Catholic population of 38 million. Archbishop of Krakow, Marek Jedraszewski asked participants to pray “for other European nations to make them understand the necessity of returning to their Christian roots in order that Europe remains Europe.” Polish Prime Minister, Beata Szydło, a devout Catholic, and mother of a recently ordained priest, tweeted an image of a wooden rosary bead and a greeting of support to those taking part. In certain cases, Polish citizens were joined in prayer by participants across the border; Poland has land borders with Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia (Kaliningrad). The popularity of the event reflects the level of Christian faith still found in Poland along with a general sense of foreboding over what many Poles see as an attack on their values coming from a European Union accelerating into chaos. “Poland is in danger. We need to shield our families, our homes, our country from all kinds of threats, including the de-Christianization of our society, which the EU’s liberals want to impose on us,” one participant explained to the AFP, adding that Islam was again becoming a threat as in centuries past. Marsha Blackburn’s Senate campaign announcement ad has been blocked by Twitter over a statement the abortion rights opponent makes about the sale of fetal tissue for medical research. Blackburn, who is running for the seat being opened by the retirement of Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, boasts in the ad that she “stopped the sale of baby body parts.” A Twitter representative told the candidate’s vendors on Monday that the statement was “deemed an inflammatory statement that is likely to evoke a strong negative reaction: Twitter said the Blackburn campaign would be allowed to run the rest of the video if the flagged statement is omitted. While the decision keeps Blackburn from paying to promote the video on Twitter, it doesn’t keep it from being linked from YouTube and other platforms. Blackburn took to Twitter to urge supporters to re-post her video and join her in “standing up to Silicon Valley.” Blackburn was the chair of a Republican-run House panel created to investigate Planned Parenthood and the world of fetal tissue research that earlier this year urged Congress to halt federal payments to the women’s health organization. Democrats said the GOP probe had unearthed no wrongdoing and wasted taxpayers’ money in an abusive investigation. The panel was created after anti-abortion activists released secretly recorded videos in 2015 showing Planned Parenthood officials discussing how they sometimes provide fetal tissue to researchers, which is legal if no profit is made. Fetal tissue research has strong backing among scientists for its value in studying Down syndrome, eye disease and other problems. But Blackburn’s committee report said fetal tissue “makes a vanishingly small contribution to clinical and research efforts, if it contributes at all,” and recommended curbing federal grants for such research. The agency added 90 per cent of the fires were either intentionally or accidentally started by people. Wildfires in Portugal this year have accounted for more than one-third of the burnt forest in the entire 28-nation European Union.

The quake hit at 4:53 PM local time at a depth of 7 kilometers. Residents as far away as San Francisco reported feeling the quake. Between the seismic activity and a litany of wildfires still burning in wine country, Monday was a dramatic day for Northern Californian weather. Vatican academy reinterprets ‘pro-life’ to include environment and migration NEW YORK, October 6 (C-Fam) – After a year of turmoil and speculation about its future, the Pontifical Academy for Life is holding its first plenary session at the Vatican. Pope Francis addressed the plenary of the academy on Thursday. In a powerful and unambiguous speech, he urged it to fight gender ideology, which he called a “utopia.” Being pro-life requires the academy to “re-think the semantic value of the term 'life,'” said the President of the academy, Monsignor Vincenzo Paglia, during a press conference on Monday. He said there were no plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (on Human Life) next year and that the academy was instead opening “new frontiers for debate,” mentioning specifically the environment, migration and arms control. The term life “cannot be restricted to specifically bioethical perspectives, if not in an even more limited way,” Paglia explained, referring to the past work of the academy on abortion and bioethics issues like conscientious objection, end of life health care, euthanasia, cloning, embryo research, and reproductive technologies. “If we must be pro-life we must be always, in every way, and everywhere pro-life,” he added, citing Pope Francis. Former member of the academy Luke Gormally told the Friday Fax the academy had been in a “bad way” and welcomed the efforts to reform the body. But he questioned “demoting” the focus of the academy on bioethics, pointing to the rapid development of new reproductive technologies and a bevy of normative activity on bioethics issues. “The original idea of the academy is that there should be interdisciplinary work between philosophy, theology, law, science, and the pro-life front in ways that provided arguments and positions for policymakers,” Gormally explained. When he last attended the plenary of the academy in 2015 there were plans to commemorate Humanae Vitae in 2018. They must have been scrapped, he said. The Academy was founded by Pope John Paul II in 1994 in large part for legendary pro-life scientist Dr. Jerome Lejeune in order to bring together scientists from the “various branches of the biomedical sciences” to “study and provide information and training about the principal problems of law and biomedicine pertaining to the promotion and protection of life, especially in the direct relationship they have with Christian morality and the directives of the Church’s Magisterium.” Gormally said the golden period of the Academy was under the leadership of Cardinal Elio Sgreccia as both President and Chancellor. A flurry of activity at the academy during that period led to cutting-edge discussions and guidance from the academy on topics such as cloning, embryo research, biotechnology, abortion, euthanasia, including a very important collaboration with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on Dignitas Personae (The Dignity of the Human Person). “The academy has been listened to a great deal in its history, and I think it can still have an impact,” Cardinal Sgreccia told the Friday Fax, pointing to work of the academy acknowledged widely in public debates, including at the United Nations. Cardinal Sgreccia, now an honorary consultor, indicated that many of the “new” topics have always been within the academy’s purview, including social justice and environmental ethics. The quake had a depth of 51 miles and its epicenter in Tarapaca was 45 miles east of the port city of Arica, and 54 miles southeast of the Peruvian city of Tacna, the USGS said. Analysts said preliminary data indicates the quake to be a typical subduction earthquake, meaning the seismic event was probably triggered by a portion of the Pacific plate sliding under the South American plate. Tectonic activity is common on the western edge of South America. Because of its depth, experts said the quake would have been felt in southern Peru and even in Argentina. Residents say while the quake was strong, there were no widespread communications or power outages. No tsunami warnings were issued and no injuries were reported. Damage is still being assessed.
