Fireball? Meteor? 5 things to know about the bright light over Western Canada
A mysterious bright light - and accompanying loud crash - prompted dozens of calls to the RCMP in British Columbia Monday evening.

If you happened to be walking outside in some areas of British Columbia and Alberta Monday night, you may have witnessed a
bright fireball that lit up the sky.

Around 10:14 p.m., some residents from the Okanagan to Calgary saw a mysterious light illuminate the sky, which was followed by a loud bang.

RCMP were inundated with calls after the event, as many residents were left wondering what exactly flew through the sky.

    What was the bright light?
The American Meteor Society (AMS) said the bright light was most likely a fireball, which is another word for a very bright meteor.

A meteor is a piece of space dust or debris that burns up in our atmosphere. It only becomes a meteorite if it hits the ground. A meteoroid is space debris. And if you’ve heard the word “bolide” to describe a meteor, it just means that it was an extremely bright meteor. It can also be called a fireball.

WATCH: Astronomer and Director of Big Sky Observatory James Durbano joined Global News to discuss what we likely saw over the night skies on Monday.

Meteoroids can come in several different forms. A small percentage of them are made of solid iron and others, like comets, are collections of ice and dust,
according to Space.com. If a meteoroid does survive its trip through the Earth’s atmosphere it usually means it’s made of solid iron. A more loosely held together meteoroid will usually break up in the air.

    American Meteor Society
    Where was it seen?
The AMS said it received over 100 reports of the fireball from places in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan as well as from Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

“According to our latest estimated trajectory, the fireball traveled in a southeast to northwest direction entering the atmosphere near the small city of Boswell and terminating near Meadow Creek, British Columbia,” the AMS stated on its website.

How often do fireballs head to Earth?
Several thousand meteors of fireball magnitude occur in the Earth’s atmosphere each day, astronomers believe.

But, as Earth is mostly covered in oceans, deserts (and that includes Antarctica) or uninhabited areas near the poles, most of them go unseen.

Meteoroids enter the earth’s atmosphere at very high speeds, ranging from 11 km/sec to 72 km/sec, but then they rapidly decelerate. As they slow down, they also lose mass and the meteoroid is stripped away due to high-speed collision with air molecules, according to AMS.

As it continues to fall, the light from the fireball also fades, making it “essentially invisible” when it hits the ground.

It can cause a sound — but it’s rare
There are two reported types of sounds generated by very bright fireballs, both of which are quite rare. These are sonic booms and electrophonic sounds, the AMS said.

If the bright fireball is large enough and penetrates the Earth’s stratosphere below an altitude of about 50 kilometres, there is a chance a sonic boom may be heard on the ground.

READ MORE: Lighting up the sky: Canada’s history of meteorites

On Monday evening, many residents reported the fireball was accompanied by a loud boom.

“Because sound travels quite slowly, at only about 20 kilometres per minute, it will generally be 1.5 to four minutes after the visual explosion before any sonic boom can be heard,” the AMS stated on its website.

Not the first time it’s happened ...

KevinSkrepnek, an observer of the meteor stated, "Well, that was different: while sitting on a patio in #NelsonBC the entire sky lit up and a meteorite came down. Huge boom about 1m later."

Wow, last night I heard a loud thump that I thought was someone or an animal or something hitting the house at this same time. I wonder if it was this? It was loud enough that I actually went outside to have a look around.

    Don,

I believe that the meteor struck early on Tuesday morning maybe around 1am but what you experienced is still strange so maybe another small piece of something falling to the Earth or some other disturbance. It is possible that the wildlife is on high alert about something, maybe some animal was looking for refuge in your home.

I thought that they said around 10:15? At any rate I have been a bit on edge, kids are headed back to school, the sky here looks so ominous with the wildfires the sky is orange and ash is falling from the sky. Not to mention the NK missile tests. Been praying a lot around here. :)

I was outside praying one night and saw a kind of vision in the sky a while back. It was either a massive comet with a tail like I have never seen pictures of or some other kind of celestial event. It was massive though.

    I hear ya!

And I just read the earthquake swarm at Yellowstone is one of the longest and largest ever recorded. Thankfully there has not been any earthquake recorded in this swarm with a magnitude greater than 3.3, I believe. http://www.newsweek.com/yellowstone-supervolcano-earthquake-swarm-largest-recorded-658318 But they do state that the swarm is ongoing.

PS- Yes, the article states that meteor hit around 10:15pm on Monday night. I think some people reported it in the early hours of Tuesday morning. You still may have experienced something related on Tuesday night (?).

It is other-worldly outside in both Oregon and Washington (also California and Idaho, and Montana)!

This was the view about 35 miles downstream from where we live. The Columbia River separates Oregon and Washington and this short video was taken on the Washington side. Since this was taken, the fire has merged with another fire and it is 0% contained. Many Oregonians have been ordered to leave their homes as the fire just seems to keep growing. I love the Columbia Gorge...it is so beautiful.

    djm,

I was thinking of you when I heard about this on OAN news today, the spokeswoman, an Oregonian was very choked up while explaining the current situation. I am so sorry, I have never been to Oregon but it looks beautiful from the pictures that I have seen.

I am praying for you and yours also, and all of Oregon.

Thank you, Carol. We have a bag of some essentials set out in case we get a mandatory evacuation order but I am finding that I am strangely calm and alert, but peaceful.

You know that wonderful smell of a warm fire keeping you toasty on a drizzley beach next to an ocean? I'm over it. Plus, we are all wearing the same fragrance now, Eau de Smoke.

I can't tell you how hard-working these firefighters are and all of the people who have volunteered to cook and serve them meals are so selfless. I'm beginning to understand that the most challenging events bring out the God in people, just when you need Him most.

I'm praying for all who are impacted by Harvey and will be affected by Irma. God be with everyone!

Oh I was thinking this was LAST night :) OK I think Im on the right page now. Finally!

Since you mentioned Yellowstone, we have also seen small EQ's in the crater of Saint Helens here as well that nobody has been talking about. Add all this stuff up with the eclipse, the violent storms, wildfires and also quake activity not to mention tensions between nations and it is certainly unsettling. With the way things look here in the Pacific Northwest these last few days is has been really a foreboding feeling.

I know we have been praying for God's mercy quite a bit here in our household at least.

    .
Yes and we have had winds from the east which is driving the smoke and ash toward Seattle and Tacoma as well as the coast of WA.

The good news is that the weather service is calling for rain later this week but that and the decreased temps could mean thunderstorms again in the mountains which is how this all started in the first place with multiple lightning strikes starting fires.

The area I hunt and camp in went from 17,000 acres burning to over 45,000 in two days. Crystal Mountain ski resort and many of the small mountain towns nearby have all been evacuated. The wilderness here has so much wind fall and is protected in many cases from logging so wildfires when they start are simply impossible to contain and the policy of the forest service and fire services is to allow them to burn themselves out or let God do it with the rains we usually see this time of year. They concentrate on trying to save structures and fight it where they can safely. Godspeed to them.

This is another SIGN of the demise of the USA and why the, especially Protestant, Bible Scholars can't find any evidence of a USA or any America entity being mentioned in End-Time Prophecy. Sadly, Catholic Scholars/Prelates think Illegal Immigration/Invasion is Fine & Dandy :( The Republic USA is under assault by criminal elements that being Democrat Party "Victim Group" Members are protected by Global Left Media and their Political Puppets including our evermore polarized/politicized judiciary! The USA, like every Nation, has an absolute RIGHT to control it's Borders ... except, apparently, the USA ... it ain't gonna end well :( ....... Oh!! and you Folks outside the USA .... How's that Vatican/EU approved Muslim Invasion workin' out for Ya? .... Eh!!!????

    Padraig,

So the CIA is responsible. Whomever is responsible, it is not good and this applies to the whole world. It is more censorship/control and it is getting worse day by day.

The following article explains (?) why Google banned GAB, an alternative to Twitter and Facebook https://www.whaleoil.co.nz/2017/08/...ttle-authoritarian-pro-censorship-tech-world/ .

Other examples of this censorship/control include the stories of the many bakers and other business owners who have been persecuted for refusing services based on their Christian beliefs.

Is it ok to protest on the football field and not participate in the national anthem but a high school coach cannot silently pray after (or before) a game,
https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/c...ht-to-pray-silently-at-public-school-football . The coach refused to stop praying and was suspended and his contract was allowed to expire.

In addition, some of those on the right who participated in the Charlottesville "Unite the Right Rally" have lost their jobs or have been prosecuted for their crimes but I am not certain that the same can be said for those on the left who participated in this event and/or committed crimes during this event.

The PC culture is being forced on the public,

Adam Fuller, assistant professor of politics and international relations, said people’s livelihoods are in fact often threatened by what they say, even if their views are not as extreme as, for instance, members of neo-Nazi groups.

“We’re talking about people who just have regular points of view about all kinds of things, about ethnic groups, religions, gender, whatever that may be, they just don’t feel like they can say so,” Fuller said. “Otherwise, they’re going to face dire consequences at work, whether it’s something as severe as getting fired or suspended from their job, or having a pay cut or missing out on a promotion.”

Results of a Rasmussen Report released in late August echoed this fear. According to the poll, 28 percent of American adults only feel like they have true freedom of speech today.

“Most (66 percent) think, rather, they have to be careful not to say something politically incorrect to avoid getting in trouble,” the report said.

It appears to be a new age revolution/civil war in our society.

But we can't be forced to change our values or our morality.

Civil wars look like Bosnia or Rwanda, or what is happening in Syria. What the newspaper USA Today did is wrong and partisan, but nowhere near civil insurrection. The US was far closer to civil war in the 1970s than it is today; for example, Wikipedia has a list of bombings, jailbreaks, riots and murders carried out by the Weathermen at this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Weatherman_actions

Edited to add: Yet no one today claims the US entered a state of civil war in that decade.

President Trump takes early action to prepare for Hurricane Irma in Florida and US territories, the Accuweather website notes.

"With Hurricane Irma's possible landfall on the United States approaching, President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands on Tuesday. Forecasters have described Irma as a "potentially catastrophic" Category 5 storm and one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded."

The declaration clears the way for immediate delivery of federal assistance and the positioning of assets, such as Coast Guard vessels.
