I don't enjoy scary movies much because they are generally not scary. The main characters act so stupid, by the end I'm rooting for the monsters to get them. That, and I tend to fall asleep.
My oldest sister loves Young Frankenstein. I don't remember much about it. Maybe I'll give it another go. When I was kid I thought Poltergeist was scary movie ever. I watched it again a few years ago and it didn't stand the test of time. The Excorcist has stood the test of time. It remains scary. Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, which isn't scary, but i love the dialogue, pop culture references, and the coming of age themes...I still really enjoy this one. I recently watched a Netflix series called The Haunting of Hill House because a woman at work loved it. Started off good, but got worse as it went along, with the characters behaving so stupidly, like retuning to the haunted house on a foggy night instead of waiting for daylight, I began rooting for the ghosties. The ending, like most modern horror stories, ended on a ridiculous note. It's harder to find well done stories, especially since the writers go out of their way to keep religion out. Calling a priest or using holy water never crosses anyone's mind or are quickly dismissed for silly reasons and never reconsidered.
For some strange reason I am watching a new series on Netflix called 'Sabrina the witch'. I think it is really meant for young teenagers. But what I find strnge about it is the witches in it worship the devil but the devil is supposed not be bad person. Weird. Why am I watching this/ I think I am having a second childhood.
I agree that Halloween can be good fun too though. That video of Mother Angelica and the children is adorable. It reminded me of second grade when I dressed up as Our Lady for my turn at an annual parade for those who were to be making their first Holy Communion later in the school year. The parade was done each year on All Saint's Day for the second graders only and will always be a wonderful memory. I don't care very much for horror movies either but I have watched a few and I also think that the scariest ones are based on some facts. My husband and I occasionally watch Svengoolie (https://www.svengoolie.com/). They show old "scary" movies and there is a narrator named Svengoolie who offers trivia and comments on the many ridiculous things about a particular movie which is often now funny. Occasionally, there is a famous actor/actress playing a small part in a very poorly done "scary" movie which is also a little entertaining imo. Recently, we saw a young Clint Eastwood playing a small part in Revenge of the Creature. The weekly featured movie is always a surprise, if it appears entertaining we leave it on. Some of the movies shown were comedies to begin with like The Ghost and Mr. Chicken with Don Knotts, others often feature the actors who made scary movies famous like Bella Lugosi and Boris Karloff. I just watched Vincent Price in House of Wax on TCM for the first time for Halloween, it was ok.
Its strange; when I was young I sued to adore scarey movies; now I have no interest. When I come across a video of a real exorcism I often watch it, mind blowing.
Recently I watched The Devil and Father Amorth and in it is an exorcism. When I watch movies like the Exorcist or the Devil and Father Amorth I feel sorrow for the people undergoing such brutal torments and Hope for their liberation as well as a deep admiration for the men tasked with expelling such foul spirits. For what reason they suffer it is hard to know. Maybe as a warning to others or to bolster our Faith. I know we shouldn't be caught up in fear over such things because many a Saint has suffered such torment as well. Maybe because I am a man I can be inclined toward the macabre at times. Deep suffering and torment and eventual liberation and triumph of Spirit I find greatly uplifting especially when it ends in the ultimate sacrifice of ones death for others. If only there were more movies which portrayed this message rather than the constant drum beat of despair Hollywood loves to fill our children's hearts and minds with. I like the Jack O Lantern ideas Carol. I think too that young boys and men need a certain amount of the macabre to prepare them for the battle's of life they are expected to rise to. We crave this sort of thing and society has really done its utmost to pervert or eliminate it completely.
I watched the Fr AMorth movie. I was saddened to see he did not get the demon out beofre his own death. It must have been a very ,very powerful demon. I loved the way Fr Amorth was so matter of fact and joking while dealing with such things.
