Meus pais married for 61 years and xa os casou el », said one of the neighbors who last year attended the tribute that was organized to Plácido González Ares in Budian. It was 65 years since this priest established himself as the holder of the parishes of Santiago de Cangas and San Román de Acedre (Budian belongs to the latter). It was November 21 and it was only a few days before Plácido González turned 90. At that age he died this Wednesday, September 9. He was one of the oldest active priests in the diocese of Lugo.

Plácido González Ares was born in Silleda, but he was living half a life in his priestly work in the region of Lemos. The spokesmen of the Bishopric of Lugo refer to him as “one of the oldest and most beloved priests of the diocese.” Plácido González was born on November 27, 1935 in San Cristóbal de Martixe, a parish in the municipality of Silleda that despite being in the province of Pontevedra belongs to the diocese of Lugo.

According to information published by the diocese in its social networks, Plácido González completed his studies of philosophy and theology in the major seminary of Lugo, where he actively participated in the academies of theater and missionary activity. He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1960 by Antonio Ona de Echave, then auxiliary bishop of the diocese. Eleven days later, on 11 July, he celebrated his first solemn Mass in his native parish.

His pastoral career began in the municipality of Ribas de Sil, where he was provisionally in charge of the parish of San Clodio.

In December 1960 he arrived in Pantón after being appointed economist of Santiago de Cangas and in charge of San Román de Acedre. Over the years, his work would be extended to other parishes: in 1973 he assumed San Xoán de Frontón; in October 1989 he was appointed parish administrator of Santo Estevo de Espasantes and San Vicenzo de Pombeiro; and in 2010 he added to his responsibility Santa María de Ferreira de Pantón.

Already in his final stage, from July 1, 2013, he also attended the parishes of Santo Estevo de Atán, Santo André de Ribeiras de Miño and Santiago de Vilar de Ortelle. In addition, between June 2019 and July 2020, he was temporarily in charge of the parish vacancies of San Fiz de Cangas, Santiago and San Vicenzo de Castillón, Santo Estevo de Mato, San Vicenzo de Deade, San Xulián de Eiré, San Martiño de Pantón, San Xulián de Serode and Santo André de Següín.

In the bishopric they explain that Plácido González stood out for his special concern for childhood catechesis and adult formation, and also for the promotion of pastoral initiatives such as the Christianity courses and the biblical movement in Ferreira de Pantón. In 2010 he already received a tribute from his parishioners, on the occasion of his golden weddings as a priest.

Then came other tributes, but probably the last of all was that of ten months ago in the village of Budian. It was during the feast of the Virxe da Porta, recovered in 2024 after more than half a century without them and that in 2025 they had a special meaning.

Budián was one of the most punished villages for the great fire that last summer burned much of the mouth of the Cabe River, so the neighbors put special efforts into having their newly recovered parties not cease to be celebrated. Plácido González eagerly lent himself to officiate the Mass of that November 21.

His health was already faltering, but he was still at the foot of the canyon. When Mass was over, all the neighbors waited for him on the way out and sang his birthday happy.

This Thursday will be the funeral

The funeral for Plácido González Ares will take place this Thursday, September 10, at 12:00. It will be held in the parish church of Santa María de Ferreira de Pantón, and will be presided over by the Bishop of Lugo, Alfonso Carrasco.

The village of Budian, in Pantón, celebrates the feast of the Virxe da Porta with vegetation sprouting over the ash of the fire two months ago

The target of the chapel of Budian stood out in the dark landscape that remained after the fire of the mouth of Cabe. It was only two months ago, but this weekend things were no longer so black in this town in the municipality of Pantón. A little because this rainy autumn has started to fill everything green, but especially because the neighbors are double partying. They celebrate the festivities of the Virxe da Porta, recovered last year after more than half a century without them, and the 65 years of Plácido González Ares as a parish priest.

The holidays were recovered in 2024 after 55 years of absence. « Non was clear or that it was happening, but to xente portouse moi ben e colaborou, so finally non houbo no problem in organizing the festas do ano last », explains Alberto Rodríguez, who together with Silvia Buján and Ramón Gómez, were the organizers in 2025 and are back to being it now. Last year was the uncertainty of whether neighbors would respond after so long without partying. Viewed from the outside, it might seem that this second year there could also be doubts. This time because of the fire.

This town in the parish of San Romao de Acre is probably the one that lost the most in the fire that in mid-September burned about 2,000 hectares on the two shores of the Cabe Canyon.

In that fire that affected the municipalities of Pantón and Sober burned ten houses, all in the parish of Acedre. And nine of them in Budian. But still, no one there seemed to have doubts that this year there should also be a party. « As I say unha veciña hai pouco,” said Silvia Bukhán this Saturday at the door of the chapel, “despois dunha sadness have to see a joy.”

The chapel of Budian is separated from the houses and in a slightly higher place. That is why its white walls stood out so much after the fire passed over the village without anyone being able to stop it. Everything around him was burned, but the lack of woodland or weeds nearby caused the chapel to be saved. Two months later, the generous rains this fall have already begun to cover all that black with some green. Around the chapel you see a lot of grass and ferns begin to grow.

    90 years of the priest

What still continues as it was is the houses that burned. Publicly financed reconstruction works from which they were first or second homes have not yet started, although all owners have already granted the aid. The one that was not inhabited will remain as the fire left them.

At one o’clock yesterday afternoon, the neighbors swirled inside the chapel and at the door after taking out the image of the Virgin in a brief procession. She is very small and not all fit inside, but no one wanted to miss the surprise they had prepared for the priest.

Plácido González Ares is from Lalín, but leads an entire life as a priest of the parish of Acedre and half a municipality of Pantón. Next week will turn 90 and within a few weeks will make 65 of his arrival in Pantón. The residents of Budián decided to celebrate by singing him the happy birthday at the end of the Saturday party Mass.

« Meus pais married for 61 years and xa os os os os el », said Enrique Gómez, one of those who had to stay out.

A couple of meters were the mayor of Pantón, José Luis Álvarez, with Flora Enriquez, retired teacher and good connoisseur of the history of Pantón. Flora showed the mayor a card with a photograph of the original size of the Virxe da Porta de Budian. The one that goes out in procession in this party is a more recent image and of a much lower value than that other.

« Light teño, she explains, which is treated by dunha Romanesque carving, may be late Romanesque, but Romanesque. » In the 19th century they were going to get rid of it because they saw it very deteriorated, but a neighbor decided to keep it in exchange for a little money.

Now they have her heirs at home, who live outside Pantón.

The Virgin was looking for the other door

In Budian they say that the peculiar name of its patron saint has to do with the fact that the image rebelled centuries ago when the neighbors wanted to open in the chapel a new door better oriented towards the south, where the houses of the town are. It is seen that the Virgin did not like the idea because she preferred to continue seeing the exterior through the original door, which is oriented to the east and through which you can see the source from which the people took the water. And every morning she appeared turned, as if looking away from the new door and looking for the previous one.

Today the chapel of Budian still has only one door. It is the old one, the one that was oriented to the east, where the fountain that the Virgin was looking for was seen and now also the green that comes out again among the burned trees this summer.
