I like sometimes in an old Church to read the Latin Insrciptions and to guess what they mean. Then if I can't figure them out I use me smart phone and go to Google Translate to find out. It is a good way of learning a little.
I like to put them on in utube to listen to as I go to sleep. I especially like the ones I can understand a little.
At my large, faithful Novus Ordo parish, there is no innovation in the Mass. There is quiet reverence, several altar boys in the traditional red and white garments, bells rung during consecration, traditional hymns, the organ, Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony. Many young families with 4+ children attend, and many women wear veils. We sing the Sanctus and Agnus Dei in Latin. I hear so many say they are leaving the Novus Ordo for the Latin Mass, and I always think, I bet the parish they're leaving isn't like mine. Now, the very liberal church near my house? I told my husband today that just walking into that church vs. walking into my beloved parish is like being on two different planets. There is something so wrong you can feel it in your spirit. There are no young families left. That church will die out with its aged congregation.
I think a lot of Churches are dying out. My son-in-law is a United Methodist minister. And the one church he now has (he in fact has two small churches to minister to) is older people. My mom and step dad went there for awhile, and mom said it's all older people. No young people and no kids. People are leaving the Church for many reasons. And it's scary to think about what will happen when some of these older people die. We must pray that some younger people start searching for their souls enough to get back into Church.
I learned it as a child, but if you didn't know, EWTN has a mostly latin mass on every night at 6pm. It is only 1/2 hour and you can buy online books to follow along. The one I bought is called Handbook of Prayers by James Socias. It has Latin on the left hand page and english of the same on the right, and all you need to know and easy to use. I followed along with EWTN for years and also learned some latin hymns like Panis Angelicus that really helped me also.
So very true! Remember that the Church is supposed to be universal with no language barrier. My mom told me as a child when I was learning it how wonderful it was. She said I could go anywhere in the world and participate in the Mass because in Christ we all spoke the same language, Latin. I really think that we have lost that great gift now.
Well, I'll admit that it would be nice if we all knew Latin. But I'm a bit of a dummy when it comes to languages. The little I do know of Latin wouldn't help me anywhere. If I tried to follow along, I'd get lost for sure. I'm not saying we shouldn't have the Latin Mass offered, but I would like to see Mass in English as well. As a convert, I didn't need Latin. I mean, I was 34 when I became a Catholic. And I've found that the older you are, the harder it is in some departments. And, like I said elsewhere, I'm not great at languages. My one year of Spanish in high school, and the little bit of German I learned while in the Army, just didn't help. I didn't learn much, and I've forgotten most of what little I learned. Oh, I do remember bits and pieces, but that doesn't help. Of course, for the German, I just got the little bit the Army thought I needed. But I wasn't alone in that bit. Anyway, I'll stick to my English Mass for now. If I ever find the need to go to the Latin Mass, I'll have to find someone who has a boat load of patience to help me.
For centuries, people went to Mass not knowing Latin. The point is the priest offered the Mass to God on behalf of the people in Latin, the official language of the Church. It was not about our tastes and desires. I do understand that you are a convert and have an understanding of the Mass based on the Novus Ordo. But to be frank, it’s not about whether we can speak Latin or not. And by osmosis, you will gradually understand where in the Mass the priest currently is.
There are a great many young people at my church. There are even many teens thst show up without their parents. I think certain churches are aging and dying because they don't have the faithfulness and genuine holiness that draws the young.
The Catholic Church, with its common Latin language is the acceptable tower to God, (as opposed to the Tower of Babel.) I don’t think the Latin mass will disappear, but it’s no wonder it’s under attack!
Sad Sad Sad This is not just a abomination to Latin Order Masses but N.O Masses also. The spiritual ramifications are huge. How many people will be denied mass? How many people will be denied communion? How many people will it gradually affect their faith? More importantly Mass is a spiritual weapon against darkness and evil! Maybe someone who is visiting Vatcan get converted from one of these side masses. sad sad sad its also happening at a majority of parishes. Less masses... The real ramification is evil is growing! sad sad sad
I grew up with the Latin Mass. We all followed the Mass with our Missal. We did not have to be proficient in Latin. I felt closer to Jesus. I wish my grandchildren could experience the Church of the 50's, even though It was not perfect, It was better than It is today.
A lot can be said for the common language. At one time, anyone with an education knew Latin. But those days are long gone. To most people, Latin is a dead language. I grew up without a working knowledge of it. And the one time that Latin was offered at a school I went to, I was talked out of it. I had struggled the one year in Spanish. Latin would have been at least as hard. Probably harder. Why? The teacher who offered the class was considered the hardest in the school. A lot harder than the Spanish teacher. So, it would have been kind of stupid on my part to try and take it and pass it. I probably would have gotten the first F in my life. And my dad would have gone off, big time. Not at the teacher, at me. I got into enough trouble as it was. I wasn't the daughter he wanted, and I got physically punished a lot of times over the stupidest of stuff. Anyway, those years are gone. I doubt if I had taken that one year of Latin, I would have learned enough to follow Latin during a Mass.

I am going to try and find suitable words and phrases and speak to the local Priest, then write to the Bishop and Cardinal Nicholls and the Holy Father as Cardinal Burke advises. What more can we do but Keep Watch and Pray. Does anyone else feel or sense the bowels of hell are opening up before us, and we can't see the wood for the trees. My interest in the Latin Mass was brought to my attention because my family went to Italy on a trip. While there we went to mass and I had not a clue what was being said (the mass was being said in Italian) and I said to my parents that it was ashamed that Catholics are supposed to be one family / one body but we can’t even understand each other during what is supposed to be our core and summit. They then explained the Latin Mass and the way it used to be - that you could go to a mass anywhere in the world and knew what was being said and when to kneel etc etc. I wish we all again celebrated as one
It would be nice. But there would be people like me coming into the church as adults and not knowing Latin. Sure, there are the books we can follow along in. But I'd rather know what's being said and be able to respond appropriately. I barely remember any of the Spanish I learned in high school, and even less of the German I learned while I was in Germany. So, learning Latin would have probably put me in the looney bin.
