Sensus Fidelium - Prayer for the Election of the Supreme Pontiff Lord Jesus Christ, by entrusting to St. Peter and his successors the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, Thou didst established the office of the papacy. Grant to Thy Church, we beseech Thee, a pope who, in his dedication to the Sacred Tradition of the Church, will seek to govern the Church according to the Deposit of Faith and for the salvation of souls. Immaculate Mary, Mother of the Church and Queen of Confessors, we consecrate to thee the conclave and the election of the Holy Father. Blessed Mother, look not upon our sinfulness or upon the infidelity of many Catholics who do not accept the teaching of thy Son, but upon the Church which is the spotless Bride of thy Son, so that we do not get the leader we deserve, but a Holy Father who will guide the Church for the glory and honor of thy Son. Amen
I’m equivocal over whether Bergoglio was ever a valid pope. If he wasn’t how does that affect the cardinal electors of the next conclave? He appointed 110 of 138.
None of it will be considered this election. The general consensus is that Pope Francis was the Pope.
Yes he is in with a chance. My mother always said if they ever elected an Irishman as Pope she would leave the Church.
From PF last will: "May the Lord grant a fitting reward to all those who have loved me and who continue to pray for me. The suffering that has marked the final part of my life, I offer to the Lord, for peace in the world and for fraternity among peoples." Interesting that we had a recent thread on suffering on the forum. I think its a great example that PF has left to offer his sufferings for peace. I also note he instructs to be buried at St. Mary Major and not at Vatican.

May God have mercy on him an imperfect human being like all of us May his soul and all souls rest in perpetual light. @padraig could I make a suggestion on papa francis passing I feel it's best to close the thread "pope Francis " and archive it to history out of respect.. Christ is in charge May the Holy Spirit guide the next conclave for the next chapter in our short insignificant lives oh sweet Jesus have mercy
I agree, but what happens and what should happen are two different things. This is the same reason as to why people do not consider Pope Francis to be the final pope on St. Malachy's prophetic list of popes.
In case you haven’t seen it, Fr. Z addressed this - he said that since there’s little doubt of Francis being validly the bishop of Rome you can rely on his appointment of cardinals to be valid (since they’re technically based in Rome with their titular churches).
At some point we’re going to have to have this difficult discussion. It need not be today. But if the Church is to be reborn, these issues will need to be addressed head on by the Church. And the faithful will have to come to terms with the very difficult reality that was his papacy.
As you say, it's for a later time. The thread in his name was about his time as the Pope in office. He is now dead and he will be followed by a different man in that position. I suggest, when things settle down, a thread under the name of 'The Legacy of Pope Francis', or some such, where these issues, which are not going to conveniently disappear, can be discussed. With the Help of God, it will be paralleled by a new thread dedicated to a new Pope who vigorously applies traditional doctrine to all these issues; and with Authority.
And we as a simple forum a community of lay people brought together by our Holy Mother who herself weeps at the loss of one soul to the abyss would indeed encourage us to pray and beg Gods mercy for All of her children I agree a difficult time Brian but the chapter is over what is yet to come can only be completed with total trust in Christ may our prayers and petitions land solid at Jesus's ears
Yes, the Camerlengo is always (now at least) a Cardinal Elector. However, in the history of Camerlengos since the 12th century there have only been 2 Camerlengos elected Pope. (That figure rises to 4 if you count Popes who had been Camerlengos to Popes prior to the penultimate Pope. Camerlengos lose office once their duties have been completed and a new Pope elected.)
