St. Thérèse was a gifted amateur poet and playwright who composed a surprising amount of literary work in her spare moments during her nine years as a Carmelite nun. Some of her work was intended for public occasions such as recreations, birthdays, and feastdays, while other pieces were more private, sent to one or a few of her religious sisters.

In the same month of November 1896, she wrote a poem called “The Sacristans of Carmel,” in rhyming octosyllabic verse, which I wish to share with readers in honor of the Little Flower’s feast (whether you are celebrating it today on the new calendar or two days from now on the old calendar).

The poem was written for Sr. Marie Philomena, who had asked Thérèse for something she could sing while baking; but it was first read by her aunt. Later, all of the sacristans and altar bread bakers got to know the poem, and apparently sang it regularly in their work, to whatever familiar tune they chose that would match the meter. In this we see a splendid example of the genre of a “work song” that has nearly disappeared from the world of mass-marketed and passively consumed entertainment. One may hope such work songs still survive in the Carmels.

The religious and theological content of the song are quite worth of attention. Here is the ICS translation, slightly modified to make it more literal[2]:

    1. Here below our sweet office
Is to prepare for the altar
The bread and wine of the Sacrifice
    Which brings to earth—“Heaven”!

    2. Heaven, O supreme mystery!,
    Hides itself under humble bread,
For Heaven, it is Jesus Himself,
    Coming to us each morning.

    3. There are no queens on earth
    Who are happier than we.
    Our office is a prayer
Which unites us to our Spouse.

    4. This greatest honors of this world
    Cannot compare
To the peace, profound and heavenly,
    Which Jesus lets us savor.

    5. We bring a holy envy
For the work of our hands,
    For the little white host
Which is to veil our divine Lamb.

    6. But his love has chosen us.
He is our Spouse, our Friend.
    We are also hosts
Which Jesus wants to change into Himself.

    7. Sublime mission of the Priest,
You become our mission here below.
    Transformed by the Divine Master,
It is He who guides our steps.

    8. We must help the apostles
    By our prayers, our love.
    Their battlefields are ours.
For them we fight each day.

    9. The hidden God of the tabernacle
Who also hides in our hearts,
O what a miracle! at our voice
    Deigns to pardon sinners!

    10. Our happiness and our glory
    Is to work for Jesus.
His beautiful Heaven is the ciborium
We want to fill with souls!...

Sometimes accidents just happen. Most of you have probably seen this little video of what happened when a good priest spilled some of the Precious Blood. It is beautiful.

What a great story, Padraig. I was familiar with it. Within the last 12 months, the tabernacle has been moved back behind the altar at my parish! It's wonderful, but it does beg the question. When preparing the altar, lighting candles, extinguishing candles (whether those on either side of the tabernacle, or either side of altar, or either side of the ambo), or when I'm carrying a heavy monstrance back into the sacristy, etc, the devil sometimes bombards me with thoughts of scrupulosity. So I will say, it's a battle to maintain a demeanor of reverence. And there are Masses at which I assist when acolytes don't show up. I stand to the right of the celebrant while the credence table is to his left. So to move to the credence table to retrieve cruets and/or ciboria I pass in front of the tabernacle, also.:)

The most important attitude to cultivate is that of loving reverence and adoration before Our Lord. The Humility of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist is without equal, though Our Lady is a close second! At least when entering the Church and entering a pew, one genuflection is sufficient! Even there, however, we should remember and practice attentiveness.(y) Ah, we are frail creatures!

    My Lord and my God!

One of my favourite Meditations at night time is to go way back in time to the back of Our Lady of Grace Church in San Giovanni Rotundo and sit in a pew watching Padre Pio saying the rosary. That's it . Just to watch him. Watching him pray the rosary on his own fills me with joy and peace and makes me so happy. I also pray for him in his hard times with the Church Authorities. I know the Church well because I visited there one time and went to see the exact place. Prayer has no time, we can travel backwards and forwards so it is possible to pray for the saints in their battles whilst on Earth. :)

Everyone asks Padre Pio for prayers but whoever prays for him? So I love to go there. Way up back in the old wooden stalls.

Fr Mark Goring does not really tell the story quite right, I think. The soul of the brother in Purgatory knocked over some stuff round the altar to draw Padre Pio's attention, nearly giving him a heart attack in the process:D:D

    Then they got to chat.:)

I know for myself, once I've genuflected before entering my pew, if I leave it to do the readings I stop and bow towards the Tabernacle with my right hand touching my heart. It's the gesture that was done back in the middle ages when one of the servants had to pass before the king while doing his duties, rather than making them genuflect every time. (At least we don't have to crawl backwards away from the Tabernacle on our hands and knees with our faces to the floor, as was the custom in some of the Asian countries!)

If he's so ashamed of Jesus Christ and Christianity, he really ought to resign. After all, as Pope and thus the vicar of Christ on Earth, he is likely to upset many Mohammedans, not to mention Protestant and Orthodox Christians.

Perhaps Christ ought to have been nicer about upsetting the Pharisees and Chief Priests-then He wouldn't have needed a cross, at all, and everything would be just whippidy-doo.

    This is beautiful!

I love the video. I would love to visit this simple, lovely and holy church.

I have never been to Italy and I must admit that there is something about the Vatican that scares me a bit but to visit Our Lady of Grace Church in San Giovanni Rotondo would be amazing!

It is up the mountains in the middle of nowhere and was once a small village. I read on one occasion the snow was so heavy that the villagers could not get up to the Friary it was so deep. They were afraid that the Friars would die of hunger and had to dig their way up.

It is all changed now and is a regular pilgrimage site, with many hotels and guest houses , Holy Shops and a regular market for religious goods with a little city of stalls selling all kinds of things.

A young Cardiac Surgeon showed me round Padre Pio's Hospital which is very, very modern indeed. It has a lovely homey atmosphere. I would say the locals once lived in real poverty up there. It is touching how devoted they all are to Padre Pio. One one occasion they nearly rioted when the Church Authorities tried to transfer Padre Pio to somewhere even more remote.

I stayed with a young couple who worked in the Monastery and got me in to nosy around a lot more than normal. Curiously , though very devout Catholics they believed in Reincarnation and I could not argue them out of it. They had also read an Indian Holy Man with whom I am very familiar Yogananda Pramasana, they guy who first brought Yoga to the USA in , I think California.

My impression of Southern Italians is that while they are very open to belief in the Supernatural/Mystical they can be influenced a lot by superstition and creduality in Faith in things they should not as good Catholics be putting trust in. As for instance charms against the Evil Eye (Mal Occhio). Something that can be seen all over the Middle East.

I missed getting up to the Shrine of St Michael the Arcangel in Mount Gargano, something I deeply regret. There was a bus going up early in the morning and I missed it.

Dear forum members, perhaps this has been posted already and I have missed it, my apologies: Apparently, Fr. Ripperger has recently stated the consecration by Pope Francis was likely valid. Fr. Ripperger stated this at a conference he gave in a parish in Colorado. Apparently, Miker has posted a link but I could not find it.
I am very interested in what Fr. Ripperger, as an exorcist, has to say abut the validity of the consecration by Pope Francis. Would someone be able to share this?

A friend asked Father to clarify that comment yesterday. Father replied that the consecration “probably” fulfilled the requirements for the consecration of Russia, and re-emphasized he only meant “probably.”

The Consecration has been done, very very late. The Saturday Devotions are only marginally being carried out. The Third Secret of Fatima, even now, has not been fully revealed. Lastly I have concerns about the Holy Father Himself.

I would be very cautious about all this.

I hope everything in the Garden is indeed rosy, I strongly suspect it is not.

That wasn't my interpretation of what he said, and how/why he repeated "probably."
