there are lots of prepper sites out there. you could probably google to find a few. it's funny, people seem to focus on how to survive at home. for whatever reason, my thoughts go to how would I survive on the run maybe it's because I'm living in a temporary situation...or for some reason I feel I will be fleeing somewhere in the future. I don't know. But here's items I've thought would be good for the future... grab and go backpack of camping essentials compass & maps (including trail maps) sleeping bag or survival blanket emergency radio solar charging device water filtration device a whistle sharp knife take a first aid class take a class on how to navigate using the stars take a class on how to build a shelter learn self defense skills pepper spray
The person who wrote the book from Argentina made some good observations about how money, work and food all became very difficult, but about 1/4 of the way through I started to be very uncomfortable with his approach. It became each man to himself...kinda like the Survivor series on TV. I did not finish reading after that, because it took the peace from me. I don't know of any other books like it that brings a good balance between survival and faith.
Thanks PotatoSack! Some of these items I've thought of but not all so I appreciate the reponse. I too think about survival on the run. I've thought about putting together backpacks for each family member in the house in case we do need to run. Oh, it's just hard to know. You don't want to lose your mind prepping but still want to be somewhat prepared. Anyhow, yes, prayers are and will be essential!
Okay, good to know. I think I was able to cancel the order. I've read Currency Wars which really made me realize how bad the situation is with our fiat currency (basically a big ponzi scheme) so have done some prepping. Plus, we chat with our neighbors every Friday night at their bonfire and it's always a subject. Lots of concern without really knowing how to be best prepared. Thanks for the response, Fatima! funny thing happened today at work which I know influenced my post. I work at a store that sells all of these types of items that I listed. Today a customer comes in and asks me for help picking out a compass. We talk as we're walking towards the compasses and she's saying how she thinks big events are about to happen, really big events...how things are so bad in the world...and it's not bad here so it's hard to imagine needing this stuff...and she lives by a river, and what if it rises and she had to leave and live in her car for a week, etc. She said she just felt she should be buying this stuff to be prepared. Anyway, I got her a compass, emergency radio, emergency blanket (the kind you wrap yourself in and it traps 90% of your body heat), and matches that work while wet. She definately didn't have a list of what she wanted to buy...she was kind of all over the place...but she knew she needed to get some stuff to be prepared...and she was really focused on the compass for whatever reason. Maybe people are waking up!! As for me...I don't have any of the items I listed when my money situation improves I'll purchase some. I have self defense skills and I'm certified for first aid and cpr...but that's it!
I would add: Fishing line with hooks, antibiotic cream, flint or steel wool and dryer lint to start fire, (how to get rid of lice and mites)=mayo (NOT salad dressing) & shower cap from hotel for an hour on your hair, then comb it out, then wash well. Socks (ALWAYS keep your feet dry!), parachute cord (small, compact, and sturdy for many things), matches to use and to eat the heads off of (the sulfur gets in your blood stream within 24 hrs., won't hurt you, but keeps the mosquitoes at bay--they hate it...)
I have no money to loose so I am not worried about loosing it. Thanks for the reminder. Some of this stuff is not expensive I must buy some in a little at a time. I especially like the idea about the vodka. But basically I am following Padre Pio's advice, pray and trust I had the thought there, if only I had Padre Pio beside me through all this I would not worry about a thing. But then I thought, Padre Pio is only a prayer away. Padre Pio, Mary, Jesus, the saints...all only a prayer away..if I walk through the valley of the angel of death, I will not fear, for you are with me.... Yes. Pray and trust
Just got word!!!! from National terror alert in my email box US ships moving in waters toward Pyongyung sp. taking N. Korea's threats seriously...read I have to get my kids ready for school
at a minimum a radio with multiple sources of power (hand crank & solar) with flashlight and NOAA bands. these are the basic feature set on the radios. solar is great because you can just leave it on a window sill and it should always be charged for when you need it. usually 2 minutes of hand cranking gives 10 minutes of power. NOAA will give you 24x7 weather and information for after earthquakes, natural disasters, etc. I'm not sure if this is US only though? you can add on features from here, like alarm, clock, digital display, battery backup, charging phones and mobile devices, etc. But once you start adding features such as these, they are more complex to use and use more power. so I prefer basic features that are easy to use. you can search for emergency radio on amazon to find a ton. Thank you for your post, Padraig! While, as a mom of 4 kids, I do feel like I need to make sure that we are at least somewhat prepared (keep the cupboards from being bare, make sure my gas tank isn't on empty, etc.), I'm not about to become a Doomsday Prepper. You are right; pray and trust! I am wearing my Padre Pio metal now; he is like a spiritual grandfather to me so thanks for mentioning him!
I love Padre Pio, Tina. There's just something about him. I loved the way he shouted at people in the confessional and slammed the shutter shut in their faes and had big rows with the Communists. Which sounds like a funny reason to like him, but he teaches us to believe, to really believe in something. People talk today about being 'compassinate' and 'caring' when all they really mean is that they are too afraid to open their mouths and don't believe enough to make a stand. But Padre Pio knew exactly where he stood. Which is maybe why they gave him such a hard time. Padre Pio believed and knew what he believed. Wonderful man. Also when you pray to him, I can feel him standing there listneing and ready to help. A very,very, very great saint.
So true, Padraig! When I read the story about Padre Pio's life, I wished I would have known him. Now I just try to be connected to him through prayer and my metal. I'm sure he shakes his head at some of the things I do and would give me a good earful if he were here on earth yet. No fear to say it how it truly is. If we all could just have an ounce of his wisdom and true compassion for the souls of all humans, the world we a wonderful place.
I must add to the emergency list: moringa powder, read about this tree, (Moringa) the entire tree is edible..it is a little bitter but loaded turmeric for sure daily black seed oil Hemani or mountain rose.com water filters to remove microbial cysts, giardia and crypto can get through though...big problem Moringa powder or moringa combination powder, the strongest: this is what I have 4 times the potassium in bananas 4 times the fiber in oates 14 times the calcium in milk 9 times the iron in spinach 2 times the vitamin A in carrots 2 times the protein in yogurt
