Another thought came into my head to confuse things. The Eastern Churches take a different approach to these matters than ourselves. My head is getting dizzy.

It was my impression that the Eastern Churches (the 23 or so in line with Rome) were more or less the same. The Orthodox I know are different, but that it a whole different kettle of fish.

The Eucharist being the body and blood of Jesus is doctrine. Being married in God's eye and then divorcing and remarrying is contrary to the doctrine of Christ and is a mortal sin. Taking communion while in mortal sin adds to ones condemnation. There is no grey area in any of the teachings above. If a pope or bishops for that matter change or modify these truths they would be anathema. Guess we will just have to wait and see what becomes of the synod.

An all male priesthood is a doctrine and that is what St. JPII wrote in his encyclical, and he made clear that the Church has no authority to change what Christ instituted. Doctrine can never change. Church discipline can.
