Please see the 'contemporary stigmatics' thread for more discussion regarding the reliability (or otherwise) of Luz de Maria Bonilla. This by no means constitutes a dismissal of her purported messages, nor even a critique of them as such, but there are some indications that she has been clearly wrong on at least one instance in the past, in her unfortunate brush with the false visionary Giorgio Bongiovanni. Getting mixed up like this isn't a capital offence (anyone can fall for a charlatan - even St John Paul II supported Marcial Maciel...), but this kind of error does serve as a reminder that as a general rule, private revelations should always be 'held lightly' and read on a case-by-case basis, as there may be chaff mixed in with the wheat. If readers see something weird, puzzling or downright incomprehensible in an alleged message, just put it to one side and move on.
Did Luz recently mention to pray for Ecuador.....and /or Japan? So many earthquakes (big ones) being reported now....last couple of days for Japan and just now this: A powerful, 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook Ecuador's central coast on Saturday, killing at least 28 people and spreading panic as far away as the Andean capital of Quito as it collapsed homes and rattled buildings. Peru is just south and I know it's been mentioned recently.

I do think it is appropriate to quote here from Pope Francis' morning homily today in Sancte Marta: Follow Jesus, Not ‘Fortune Tellers’ Nor ‘Alleged Visionaries’ (from https://zenit.org/articles/at-santa-marta-pope-gives-simple-recipe-for-not-erring-in-christian-life/ ) We need to take note of Pope Francis on this matter as he is most certainly aware of Luz Maria and other South American 'visionaries' and has previously spoken about Our Lady not being a 'postmistress' sending out daily messages. I am a strong believer in Medjugorje and believe that Francis is positive about the events there but I think we need to be much more discerning about other 'apparitions'. I greatly respect Peter's more open approach to these matters but I respect even more the fact that Pope Francis has given us again this warning.
To put this in context, here's the text that David is referring to, with some thought-provoking guidelines as to how to recognize Jesus's voice. It needs to be remembered that there are lots of people out there who read purportedly Christian private revelations and have pictures of Padre Pio on their wall but also consult mediums, Reiki healers, watch Oprah Winfrey, go to Deepak Chopra seminars etc. etc. This is just as true in France as in Italy, where according to one exorcist apparently 25% of the population has dabbled in some form of occult activity! This is clearly what the Pope is talking about here - an attitude above anything else. The logical question that arises from Pope Francis's remarks is - how do the supposed private revelations posted here for the readers' discernment match up to the standard he is setting for recognizing Jesus's voice? This practising of discernment remains essential, as no a priori approach (for example, that of certain Greek Orthodox who say that 'Jesus only appears to persons of ecclesiastical rank') can establish whether a given apparition/message is authentic or not - all prophecy needs to be evaluated, and no carte blanche can be given to a visionary, however prestigious. I always feel in my heart to be careful with Luz de Maria. I fell the same with Eduardo Ferreira. Some apparitions seem to speaking the truth and asking for prayers for many years but are just waiting for the opportunity to tell a little lie.
If readers feel uneasy about various apparitions/messages on which the Church has not yet given an opinion, just leave them alone. However, if someone wants to advance in a public forum like this the argument that a particular person's alleged mystical experience is false, we really need objective arguments to be able to discuss. Simple saying 'I feel that...' may be an honest and accurate reflection of one's state of mind/intuition, but it doesn't provide any kind of basis for an evaluation (the obvious question being 'what if someone else feels the opposite?').
Beautiful. And anyone who wants to use Pope Francis' words (either these or earlier ones) to promote a dismissive attitude toward private revelation should remind himself that the Holy Father has consecrated his entire Papacy to Our Lady of Fatima -- not just any apparition, but a modern one, followed by tens of thousands before it was approved, wherein specific prophecies were given and specific times/dates were also given for a sign. Besides, if we live in an age (and indeed we do) in which the devil is sending torrents of false prophets to us, we can only conclude that his motive in doing so is to drown out (cf. Revelation 12:15) the true prophets whose mission today is more important than ever.
The problem is, even with prayer how do we really know who is really the right now and if we are not sure how do we know which to pay attention to? God wouldnt send them if he didnt want us paying attention to them.
The Certainty of Faith is reserved for the Deposit of Faith; don't expect it in Private Revelation. Just try your best to discern and trust that this is enough to allow you to do God's Will.
My understanding of private revelation is that some (new) theological idea must be present. Private revelation isn't about telling us a play by play of what's going to happen in the future. My problem with private revelation is the cult behind it...they follow private revelation more the the church is itself. There is a place for private revelation but many go overboard. Just a thought
