    jackzokay,

Bundoran was the O'Loughlins' ancestral home. My great-grandfather, Edward, and his wife, Rose, emigrated from there and came over to Philadelphia in 1870.:) Edward opened a liquor store, but then became a Philly policeman who didn't retire until he was 80. He also published poetry in the Philly newspapers.

My Dad always half-seriously said we originate from Vikings who settled on the old sod, because our surname means "from the water." Of course, my Dad was full of blarney and could wing a tall tale from scratch without batting an eye. John kept me in stitches when I was young! A funny man, indeed!

Safe in the Arms of Mary!

I personally know of 2 priests who left active vocation during the pandemic most likely for some if not all of the reasons your cite. The good news is their parishioners and other Catholic faithful rallied around them with intense prayer. One has returned to full time ministry and the other is back but not yet in the parish. There is such a huge need and dare I say our “job” to pray for our shepherds. The attacks they are enduring are quire intense. Again, I’m blessed to know a few priests on a more personal level and I can see it - they never complain, but I see it in their faces. O Mary , please cover them all in your Mantle.

Soldiers depend so much on their Officers, their leaders to give them reassurance and a sense of direction.

Pope St John Paul 2 did this in spades. But with the current leadership there is only chaos, no one knows what is going on.

It's so interesting that Pope St John Paul spoke of an, 'Anti Church'. What does such a thing mean? It means a False Church that apes the true Church. It will look just like the true Church but will be the work of the Devil. It will look exactly like the Real Deal but will be led by false priests, Bishops, Cardinals and...dare I say it...by a False Pope in Rome.

The people whose religion has sunk to be pro forma, a box ticking exercise will follow these false teachers and clergy. Only those who have a living relationship with Jesus Christ, a strong prayer life will recognise these wolves for what they are and not follow them, skipping, along the downward road to hell.

These few are the Faithful Remnant.

I think the World Wide Closure or our Churches and Sacraments were a big, big step towards the erection of the False Church. A Church without Jesus.

The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ. Physical things like Great Cathedrals, Bishops, Cardinals, Great Universities and hospitals are only the outer expression of an inner reality. The Mystical reality of love, of loving God and each other. When that heart stops beating, all else is so much nonsense. It is false.

Your Dad wasn't too far wrong! Whilst there are no official Viking surnames there are about 60 Irish surnames that indicate Viking origins or relationships including O'Loughlin.

O’Loughlin stems directly from a word meaning literally “Viking”, Lochlann in Irish.

    Do you know Rose's surname?

Moran. I believe she originally came from County Mayo. Edward was a constable down there. He was a very tall man for his time: 6'4". He eventually transferred to Dublin. Because of his build he was selected to be a bodyguard for Queen Victoria, but would have had to covert to the Church of England. Knowing he would refuse, at the age of 28 he and Rose skipped off to America in 1870, settling in Philadelphia. They had 13 children, though 7 of them died within their first year. Their son, Daniel, is my grandfather.

    St. Patrick, pray for Ireland!

Well, Terry you have wonderful Irish roots - your great grandparents were married in the parish of Islanddeady in Mayo on 20 June 1870.

Unfortunately, the marriage seems to have not been registered civilly (a pity as this would have given the name of the fathers).

This is St Patrick's RC Church, Islandeady and I assume where you ancetors married.

How wonderful of you to locate this, garabandal! Looks like they got married right before jumping on the boat! Just to clarify, the longhand looks like an "a" but the surname is "O'Loughlin"! Again, thanks so much. I've just forwarded this to everyone on our family WhatsApp chat!

That's a lovely story, Mario.. I was speaking with Brian. He's going to visit Ireland if ever things settle down.
It would be nice if he had company on his journey from America, and during his stay here.
...we 'Mother of God-ers' could all meet up.
    That would be something special.

    jackzokay,

That certainly would be wonderful to get together! Thinking about it, I have little doubt that the witnesses of their marriage ( Michael and Anne) must have been Rose Moran's parents. I can't believe they would have missed their daughter's wedding when she was about to skip off to America!

Please make the arrangements, Mother Mary!

I think perhaps the reason why people find it difficult to accept a Crucifix on the wall of a hospital or school is that they have come to regard Government as God and religious practice undermines this.

It is very much the same as the situation in the Roman Empire when the Emperor was considered a God and people had to make Sacrifice to him.

“To the kindly influence of Christianity we owe that degree of civil freedom, and political and social happiness which mankind now enjoys. In proportion as the genuine effects of Christianity are diminished in any nation, either through unbelief, or the corruption of its doctrines, or the neglect of its institutions; in the same proportion will the people of that nation recede from the blessings of genuine freedom, and approximate the miseries of complete despotism.”
“All efforts to destroy the foundations of our holy religion, ultimately tend to the subversion also of our political freedom and happiness.”
“Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government, and all the blessings which flow from them, must fall with them.”

Having Government as our God appears in a human sense to work out fine when things are going well. We Worship at the Feet of Government and Government in its turn gives payback. Things keep getting better and better; what's not to like?

The difficulty, I think comes when things take a down turn and things are getting worse and worse (as they are at the moment) and the Government /God is not giving pay back for the Worship given. In other words instead of things are not getting better and better , things are getting worse and worse. At the moment things are not only getting worse and worse, things are falling to pieces all around us.

I notice in the course of human events here in the West how gently we are being steered to turn our eyes back to the Face of the God who made us. Material Goods and possessions are being taken away from us, but stage by stage. We are being given such a large amount of time to convert and turn back to God. God is being gentle and kind with us, His children, but He is also being very, very firm.

There is something very, very spooky about someone wanting a Cross being taken down from a wall. Very, very spooky indeed. Most especially when that someone is from Government.
