    Good saying, though that's about the only saying of Voltaire I can stomach!:rolleyes:

    I love You, Jesus!

    It all seems to be about not offending people. About being nice. It occurs to me the very best way not to offend people is not to exist at all. To delete yourself. Then you would never ever offend anyone ever again.

    Someone once wrote that the opposite of love is not hate. That the true opposite of love is apathy.

    But perhaps the true opposite of love is being nice.

    I don't see how Catholics if they really believe in their own Teachings can truly fit into the modern Pagan world anymore than they fitted into that of Ancient Rome. We are bound to offend people like crazy and be totally unnice and uncool.

    Matthew 10:34

    The Sword of the Gospel
    33But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father in heaven. 34Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.…

    You know, that's one thing I've always realized: how very "uncool" I've always been, and how strange it is that more Christians aren't willing to stand out from the crowd and be uncool too. For instance, I have never, ever, heard one person ask someone not to use God's name in vain. I bring this up because I don't think most people realize what a stunner it is and how it stops people in their tracks. I remember a young man in college was walking down the sidewalk with me and my friend and used God's name in an awful way. Although I was incredibly shy, I blurted out pretty authoritatively "Please don't use God's name like that in my presence." He turned to look at me with this look of absolute shock and incredulousness, and opened his mouth as if to retort back, but then he just stared at me for a minute and said, "Ok."

    I've had many instances like that. Somehow I've never grown desensitized to hearing bad words or God's name used in vain and I honestly gasp sometimes and people are so surprised, amused, or annoyed...but it ALWAYS affects them and they never use that language near me again.

    To witness to the truth of what's right is shocking and memorable because people are used to just being accepted the way they are and never challenged. I may be the last person anyone wants at their party, but that's the price I've always been willing to pay. The truth isn't comfortable, but it changes people.

    It is so striking at the Passion of Our Lord it was mostly the Holy Women who Stood by Him while the men ran away and hid. At very considerable risk to themselves, I I suspect.

    As to the men who stood by Him, they were not whom we might expect. St John, the youngest of them all. St Joseph of Armathea who seems to have been a prosperous member of the Sanhedrin and St Simon of Cyrene a passing face who got roped in.

    I suppose this time round at the Passion of the Church it will be much the same. The women and the least expected who will stand most firm.

    What is come upon will be like a great whirlwind and storm. A huge winnowing and testing.But, as Jesus said those who stand firm in the little things will stand firm in the Great.

    Please God we are, all of us, standing firm in the little things.

    When Jesus Came To Birmingham

    When Jesus came to Golgotha, they hanged Him on a tree,
    They drove great nails through hands and feet, and made a Calvary;
    They crowned Him with a crown of thorns, red were His wounds and deep,
    For those were crude and cruel days, and human flesh was cheap.

    When Jesus came to Birmingham, they simply passed Him by.
    They would not hurt a hair of Him, they only let Him die;
    For men had grown more tender, and they would not give Him pain,

    They only just passed down the street, and left Him in the rain.

    Still Jesus cried, 'Forgive them, for they know not what they do, '
    And still it rained the winter rain that drenched Him through and through;
    The crowds went home and left the streets without a soul to see,
    And Jesus crouched against a wall, and cried for Calvary.

    I haven’t consumed passive media for a long time. I have found I don’t share the same ideas of things “normal people” do.

    I think the ruling class only allow democracy because everyone has their worldview shaped by education, entertainment and the news. Even when they “think for themselves” they come to the exact same conclusions. If the source of people’s ideas are the same that would explain it. If people really thought for themselves they wouldn’t find someone disagreeing so crazy.

    Katherine Zappone has fallen-good news for a change. She has been hoist on her own petard and denied a role that would have allowed her to dictate to the world what we can and cannot say-that of Irish ambassador to the UN with responsibility for overseeing freedom of speech. This politician, rejected by the electorate, was found to have inappropriately wangled the job, breaching COVID regulations in the process.

    Couldn't be more delighted for her. That aul witch brings the worst language out of me.

    My blood ran cold when I heard of her appointment. Freedom of speech hah I can see how that would have gone down.

    True. What a lesson!

    Tradition has it that John might’ve been around 20. All the other disciples were mature men maybe in their 40s or 50s

    But of course they more than made up for their weakness in the years ahead.

    I have a little hobby in Church, which is, sometimes to count the number of women and then to count the number of men. Usually the women outnumber by about three or four to one, which is telling in itself. Actually in some countries Religious practice is seen as something for women only. I heard of one Latin American country were men simply do not go to Communion as it is considered something only for women and the men are afraid of being laughed at if they go. So sad.

    On the other hand I have a theory that when men do turn to the Spiritual Life they can be really, really extraordinary. Witness priests, for instance.

    Meeting a Holy Man always draws my complete attention.

    This is a cocktail currently on the menu at a bar in Galway. Honestly, if that giant wave washes this island away it will be too light a punishment for us :cry:

    Ó my God this is beyond the pale. I am utterly shocked. What hotel/ bar is this.
    I was in Galway for a few days recently and I was really impressed by the number attending daily Mass in the Cathedral and they had all day adoration. It was difficult to find a seat at adoration.
