Interesting to read of a discussion of various religious orders. I've been following an interesting discussion on the Orthosphere (a secular, but very orthodox site) about some reasons for the monastic tradition. While the primary purpose of monks was unquestionably the coming together of holy men to live in community for the glory of God, as the tradition grew, it was considered by the Church in her wisdom to be a means of providing a way of life for many men, and many women who entered the nunneries, as an alternative to lives of sin, disrepute and dysfunction. Being so wise in the frailties of human nature, the Church realised the necessity of severe discipline for these people. Hence the strict rules and the discouragement of 'special friendships'. We know what happened with the relaxation of the rules. Now, with the collapse of the monastic tradition, even those whom it might suit that remain as believers are left 'going wild', with the lack of needed discipline leading to the social chaos we see all around us. The unpleasant, and currently utterly suppressed truth, is that many if not most human beings need severe discipline for their own good. This is the only way they can achieve real freedom, because it is only through discipline that one can achieve the state of awareness required to make real choices.

I came here to comment on Eurovision but you all beat me to it. As a family we used to watch it together with chips and dips and fun food just to laugh at the music and Terry Wogan’s comments. Even now we have WhatsApp open to chat remotely. So sad that for a while it hasn’t been suitable family viewing. Last night had some good songs but the whole thing was a freak show and the UK made me ashamed with a rent boy act. I cannot see how Ireland could have entered such a horrible act. My eldest daughter says she was so upset she will never watch Eurovision again. How can this be normalised? The young woman Bambie is clearly lost and in a very dark place. The UK gave her 10 points. Israel had a very good song by a young girl in a dress that was far more modest than most of the others. The programme was mostly like a Pride festival. Just sickening. Not family viewing anymore
The devil seems to have particularly taken over certain areas which he regarded as important. The media. The Universities.Hollywood. Politicians. The extremely wealthy. The Vatican and so on. I suspect ordinary people are naturally more conservative but when it keeps getting pumped into their brains 27/7 it becomes normalised. With older people it may be more difficult. With people who truly pray, impossible. But so few really pray.
A lot of things these people do goes against the Natural Law. So when people see others doing these things they are naturally disgusted. This is a hard instinct to erase out of people.

The devil seems often to attack the mind in many people first, the intellect. The main fault being pride. I think the big mistake people make is to think being smart is who they are. Whereas being smart is merely an attribute like how tall we are , what our skin colour is and so on. Intellect is a gift from God freely given. What truly sets us apart and what makes us wonderful is how much we love. If we were to be proud of anything it would be this. But even this is a result of grace.
