The following (short) book about the Permanent Instruction of the Alta Vendita, written by the late John Vennari, is worth reading.

Few Catholics know of the Permanent Instruction of the Alta Vendita, a secret document written in the early 19th Century that mapped out a blueprint for the subversion of the Catholic Church. The Alta Vendita ws the highest lodge of the Carbonari, an Italian secret society with links to Freemasonry and which, along with Freemasonry, was condemned by the Catholic Church. (1) Father E. Cahill, S.J. in his book Freemasonry and the Anti-Christian Movement states that the Alta Vendita was "commonly supposed to have been at the time the governing centre of European Freemasonry." (2) The Carbonari were most active in Italy and France.

In his book Athanasius and the Church of Our Time, Bishop Rudolph Graber quoted a Freemason who declared that "the goal (of Freemasonry) is no longer the destruction of the Church, but to make use of it by infiltrating it."(3)

In other words, since Freemasonry, cannot completely obliterate Christ's Church, it plans not only to eradicate the influence of Catholicism in society, but to use the Church's structure as an instrument of "renewal", "progress" and "enlightenment" to further many of its own principles and goals.

An Outline
The strategy advanced in the Permanent Instruction of the Alta Vendita is astonishing in its audacity and cunning. From the start, the document tells of a process that will take decades to accomplish. Those who drew up the document knew that they would not see its fulfillment. They were inaugurating a work that would be carried on by succeeding generations of the initiated. "In our ranks the soldier dies and the struggle goes on."

The Instruction called for the dissemination of liberal ideas and axioms throughout society and within the institutions of the Catholic Church so that laity, clerics and prelates would, over the years, gradually are imbued with progressive principles.

In time, this mind-set would be so pervasive that priests would be ordained, bishops would be consecrated, and cardinals would be nominated whose thinking was in step with the modern thought rooted in the French Revolution's Declaration of the Rights of Man and other "Principles of 1789" (religious pluralism, equality of religions, separation of Church and State, etc.)

Eventually, a Pope would be elected from these ranks who would lead the Church on the path of enlightenment and renewal. It must be stressed that it was not their aim to place a Freemason on the Chair of Peter. Their goal was to effect an environment that would eventually produce a Pope and a hierarchy won over to the ideas of liberal Catholicism, all the while believing themselves to be faithful Catholics.

These Catholic leaders, then, would no longer oppose the modern ideas of the revolution (as had been the consistent practice of the Popes from 1789 until 1958 who condemned these liberal principles) but would amalgamate them into the Church. The end result would be a Catholic clergy and laity marching under the banner of the enlightenment all the while thinking they are marching under the banner of the Apostolic keys.

Is it Possible?
For those who may believe this scheme to be too far-fetched -- a goal too hopeless for the enemy to attain, it should be noted that both Pope Pius IX and Pope Leo XIII asked that The Permanent Instruction be published, no doubt, in order to prevent such a tragedy from taking place. These great Pontiffs knew that such a calamity was not impossible.

However, if such a dark state of affairs would come to pass, that there would be three unmistakable means of recognizing it;

1. It would produce an upheaval of such magnitude that the entire world would realize that the Catholic Church had undergone a major revolution in line with modern ideas. It would be clear to all that an "updating" had taken place.
2. A new theology would be introduced that would be in contradiction to previous teachings.
3. The Freemasons themselves would voice their cockle-doodle of triumph believing that the Catholic Church had finally "seen the light" on such points as pluralism, the secular state, equality of religions, and whatever other compromises had been achieved.

The Authenticity of the Alta Vendita Documents
The secret papers of the Alta Vendita that fell into the hands of Pope Gregory XVI embrace a period that goes from 1820 to 1846. They were published at the request of Pope Pius IX by Cretineau-Joly in his work The Roman Church and Revolution.(4)

With the brief of approbation of February 25, 1861 which he addressed to the author, Pope Pius IX guaranteed the authenticity of these documents, but he did not allow anyone to divulge the true members of the Alta Vendita implicated in this correspondence.

The full text of the Permanent Instruction of the Alta Vendita is also contained in Msgr. George E. Dillon's book, Grand Orient Freemasonry Unmasked. When Pope Leo was presented with a copy of Msgr. Dillon's book, he was so impressed that he ordered an Italian version to be completed and published at his own expense.(5)

In the encyclical Humanum Genus, Leo XIII called upon Catholic leaders to "tear off the mask from Freemasonry and make plain to all what it really is. (6)" The publication of these documents is a means of "tearing off the mask". And if the Popes asked that these letters be published, it is because they want all Catholics to know the secret societies' plans to subvert the Church from within -- so that Catholics would be on their guard and hopefully, prevent such a catastrophe from taking place.

The Permanent Instruction of the Alta Vendita
What follows is not the entire Instruction, but the section that is most pertinent to our discussion. The document reads:

"Our ultimate end is that of Voltaire and the French Revolution - -the final destruction of Catholicism, and even of the Christian idea...

The Pope, whoever he is, will never come to the secret societies; it is up to the secret societies to take the first step toward the Church, with the aim of conquering both of them.

The task that we are going to undertake is not the work of a day, or of a month, or of a year; it may last several years, perhaps a century, but in our ranks the soldier dies and the struggle goes on.

We do not intend to win the Popes to our cause, to make them neophytes of our principles, propagators of our ideas. That would be a ridiculous dream; and if events turn out in some way, if Cardinals or prelates, for example, of their own free will or by surprise, should enter into a part of our secrets, this is not at all an incentive for desiring their elevation to the See of Peter. That elevation would ruin us. Ambition alone would have led them to apostasy, the requirements of power would force them to sacrifice us. What we must ask for, what we should look for and wait for, as the Jews wait for the Messiah, is a Pope according to our needs...

With that we will march more securely towards the assault on the Church than with pamphlets of our brethren in France and even the gold of England. Do you want to know the reason for this? It is that with this, in order to shatter the high rock on which God has built His Church, we no longer need Hannibalian vinegar, or need gunpowder, or even need our arms. We have the little finger of the successor of Peter engaged in the ploy, and this little finger is as good, for this crusade, as all the Urban IIs and all the Saint Bernards in Christendom.

We have no doubt that we will arrive at this supreme end of our efforts. But when? But how? The unknown is not yet revealed. Nevertheless, as nothing should turn us aside from the plan drawn up, and on the contrary everything should tend to this, as if as early as tomorrow success were going to crown the work that is barely sketched, we wish, in this instruction, which will remain secret for the mere initiates, to give the officials in the charge of the supreme Vente (Lodge) some advice that they should instill in all the brethren, in the form of instruction or of a memorandum.

Now then, to assure ourselves a Pope of the required dimensions, it is a question first of shaping him... for this Pope, a generation worthy of the reign we are dreaming of. Leave old people and those of a mature age aside; go to the youth, and if it is possible, even to the children. You will contrive for yourselves, at little cost, a reputation as good Catholics and pure patriots.

This reputation will put access to our doctrines into the midst of the young clergy, as well as deeply into the monasteries. In a few years, by the force of things, this young clergy will have overrun - all the functions; they will form the sovereign's council, they will be called to choose a Pontiff who should reign. And this Pontiff, like most of his contemporaries, will be necessarily more or less imbued with the Italian and, humanitarian principles that we are going to begin to put into circulation. It is a small grain of black mustard that we are entrusting to the ground; but the sunshine of justice will develop it up to the highest power, and you will see one day what a rich harvest this small seed will produce.

In the path that we are laying out for our brethren, there are found great obstacles to conquer, difficulties of more than one kind to master. They will triumph over them by experience and by nearsightedness; but the goal is so splendid that it is important to put all the sail to the wind in order to reach it. You want to revolutionize Italy, look for the Pope whose portrait we have just drawn. You wish to establish the reign of the chosen ones on the throne of the prostitute of Babylon; let the Clergy march under your standard, always believing that they are marching under the banner of the apostolic keys. You intend to make the last vestige of tyrants and the oppressors disappear; lay your snares (nets) like Simon Bar-Jona; lay them in the sacristies, the seminaries, and the monasteries rather than at the bottom of the sea: and if you do not hurry, we promise you a catch more miraculous than his. The fisher of fish became the fisher of men; you will bring friends around the apostolic Chair. You will have preached a resolution in tiara and in cope, marching with the cross and the banner, a revolution that will need to be only a little bit urged on to set fire to the four corners of the world."(7)

It now remains for us to examine how successful this design has been.

Yes, Ive been in a state of shock this afternoon, reading the vitriolic take downs. And from Fr Longenecker, as well - that seemed like an unnecessary betrayal of a friend. Why write things like that about a book your (so-called) friend wrote? Why not just say "I don't feel that it is appropriate for me to review it." ???

I feel sad for Taylor that he had to read such a disrespectful dismissive review from someone he obviously held in high esteem and trusted.That is outright back-stabbing.

We seem to be living in a time where catholics are turning mercilessly on fellow catholics and there is a terrible lack of charity.

In order to know how to fight, we have to know where we are, as a Church, and how we got to this place. Yes, it was a Trojan Horse in the City of God.

We see it in politics too - for example, in New Zealand, it is coming to light that the Communists have been and still are inserting themselves in to our political power structures.

If we don't know their tactics, we cannot fight them/ stop them.

 

It reminds me of Alinsky's plan via Lenin and the Frankfort School to subvert the West end all its institutions. It has played out exactly as the perpetrators intended. I think it is naive to think there was not infiltration of the Church. The proof is in the pudding so to speak.

 

I am sure that the Church has been infiltrated, don't get me wrong. But we are dealing with reviews from a new book here. I am glad that Carol posted Bishop Schneider's forward.

 

The fact is that we have no concrete evidence. I believe it has happened, though.

During our training as deacons, a Jesuit assigned us to read, A Concise History of the Catholic Church. It was generally very informative, but when one considered the period of 1816-2000, it became obvious that the author came mostly from a modernist perspective. He was enthralled with Vatican II, considered Pius X as a control freak and stifler of theological inquiry, and St. John Paul II as a disappointment. I have ordered a copy of Infiltration and realize ahead of time what it proposes and that it will have a Traditionalist bent. In all things, my aim is to grow in love for Christ Our King.

I think the conservative commentators, in their cry for objectivity, fail to acknowledge the quantum leap into confusion to which Pope Francis has led us. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not insinuating all fault rests with him, but conservatives and Traditionalists should agree that this Pontificate is pushing to reshape the Church in a mind-boggling way. This, in turn, begs the question, "How did we get here?" Marshall's book is an attempt to make sense of such a question.

As Bishop Athanasius Schneider says:

This hostility has reached its peak in our day. Not a few high-ranking members of the Catholic Church’s hierarchy have not only yielded to the relentless demands of the modern world; they are, with or without conviction, actively collaborating in the implementation of its principles in the daily life of the Church in all areas and on all levels.

I think that Mario is correct. I just want to add one more thought, I don't think that the world itself has ever been as confused as it is now. When has there been a time in the past when people questioned the existence of only 2 sexes, male and female? When was there a time when two men or two women could be legally married and raise (adopted) children?

I did not have the time to read through the reviews that Brian posted last night. The first thing that I wanted to do was to look for Bishop Schneider's foreword and post it if I could. This morning I woke up thinking about this still without reading the reviews and my thought was that I don't want to blame Pope Francis or the Church's hierarchy - past and/or present entirely for what is occurring in the Church because the world is to blame too, I am to blame too. Then I read the reviews and I believe that at least two of them touch on this but with that said, Pope Francis is adding to the confusion. Occasionally he confirms Church doctrine but in a time in which the world is in such great, great confusion we need a pope who stands firm on Church doctrine to help us all combat the confusion in the world and he is not doing that.

Since I have been studying prophecy for the past few years I think I can say that I understand Dr. Taylor Marshall's reason for writing this book. Most of us on MOG realize that we are on the cusp of some major prophecies coming to fruition. Of course, we could be wrong but I don't think so.

I also want to add that I thought that 2 of 3 reviews that Brian posted remained charitable although they were still critical of the book but Dr. Jeff Mirus' review was not charitable imho. Dr. Mirus could have easily wrote his review without terms like idiot or stupidity. When I see things like this I immediately question the author.

In any case, I noticed that Father Dwight Longenecker included a link to a fourth review that Brian did not include in his post. I am going to post part of this review below. It is a very long and detailed review which some here might be interested in reading, I will post the link to the whole review for you to do so.

It is mere recycled radical Catholic reactionary conspiratorialism: a sort of updated version of The Great Facade (2002; updated with a 2nd edition in 2015: in order to capitalize on the anti-Francis hysteria), by Christopher Ferrara and Thomas Woods. Marshall has been sinking more and more into the doom-and-gloom abyss of reactionary thinking for several years now.

I will be examining its blatant reactionary aspects and simply citing from the book (what might be called “sociological exposing of extremist elements”) and identifying plain and obvious examples of three of the four classic hallmarks of radical Catholic reactionary beliefs:

1) Pope-bashing (I will concentrate on bashing of popes other than Pope Francis).

2) Vatican II-bashing.

3) Pauline / New / “Novus Ordo” / ordinary form Mass-bashing.

[the fourth common element is ecumenism-bashing, which is also assuredly a strong motif in the book]​

I’ve applied this same method of analysis / exposure to several of the “statements” against Pope Francis and books or articles that criticized Pope Francis and also other popes, Vatican II, and the New Mass:

In other words, to sum it up: “It ain’t just Pope Francis.” It’s radical Catholic reactionary conspiratorial / alarmist / fanatical thinking (to more or less degrees, depending on the document). That’s why — increasingly — those who attack Pope Francis also are frequently observed attacking Pope Benedict XVI, Pope St. John Paul II, Pope St. Paul VI, and Pope St. John XXIII (even sometimes Ven. Pope Pius XII, too), and/or Vatican II, and/or the ordinary form Mass.

Ironically, Taylor Marshall — in 2013 — defined “radical traditionalists” almost exactly the way I define the group I coined as “radical Catholic reactionaries” (which now, sadly, includes himself). Karl Keating wrote an article called “Hyperbolic Traditionalists” on the Catholic Answers site (9-1-13). He references Taylor Marshall:

The blogger was Taylor Marshall, and his blog post appeared on July 30. He listed nine attributes that he thought distinguished radical Traditionalists from regular Traditionalists. . . .

Marshall did identify things that commonly are found among radical Traditionalists: “the denial of the Jewish holocaust,” “the outright denial of Vatican II as a valid council,” “disdain for Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis,” and “the belief that Latin Mass Catholics are ‘A Team’ and Novus Ordo Catholics are ‘B Team.’”

Those attributes don’t amount to a definition of radical Traditionalism, but they are useful indicators.​

My definition for years now has been that the radical Catholic reactionary has four hallmarks (listed not far above). I have noted that anti-Semitism is often found in these circles as well (here’s one notorious example, from Rorate Caeli), but I don’t include it as a virtually universal “hallmark.” The only other difference is that I don’t include denial of the validity of Vatican II in “Vatican II-bashing.” Almost all reactionaries uphold the validity of Vatican II, the New Mass, and popes since 1958. But they continually bash all of them.

Marshall lists three of the four above. It’s almost like he had been reading my own materials on the topic (which go back to 1997 online). We know that he has read and liked my writings because he said so (see the next section). Therefore, if we ever do directly interact on these topics, he knows full well where I am coming from with regard to my definitions for Catholic reactionaries. He held the position himself as recently as 2013.

Now he himself has espoused and engages in all four things. He has become what he was describing then, as a mainstream, legitimate traditionalist (very close to my own present position that I have held since I converted in 1990). Now he’s a radical Catholic reactionary. How very sad . . .

Now, before I offer my critique below, let me say that I don’t know Taylor Marshall personally, but I had been recommending his work till recently (we may have corresponded at some point; I don’t recall), when he decided to become a reactionary. Formerly, this is what he thought of my work:

Dave Armstrong’s book A Biblical Defense of Catholicism was one of the first Catholic apologetics books that I read when I was exploring Catholicism. Ever since then, I have continued to appreciate how he articulates the Catholic Faith through his blog and books. I still visit his site when I need a great quote or clarification regarding anything ranging from sacraments to sedevacantists. Dave is one of the best cyber-apologists out there.​

That “endorsement” is posted on my “Literary Resume” right now and has been there for some time (it goes back at least as far as 18 August 2015, according to Internet Archive).

Also, Dr. Marshall thanked me (among many others), for my “friendship and encouragement along the way” in the Acknowledgments of his 2009 book, The Crucified Rabbi.

I appreciate the kind words. And of course, none of this is personal.

[I doubt I'll read this book and I was considering reading Malachi Martin's Windswept House but I doubt I'll read that either. I don't think that I need to read anything else to realize that something very serious is going on in the world and in the Church. I simply need to pray more. ]

I signed up to be one of the reviewers for the book and received an early e-book last week. I don't think there will be much new for anyone who regularly reads this forum. It is sort of a basic 101 version of each of the areas listed in the table of contents, which I will list below. The chapters are short and just dance over each of the topics, each of which could be a book of their own. The information given though is a good primer for anyone who is not familiar with these topics. It is written in simple, easy to understand language for the layman.

That is not to say it is not an important book, but I think it is amied at people in the center who really are just waking up and don't really know much about what is going on and how the Church got here. For those people I think the book could be revelatory.

I think it is very sad that the book has gotten some negative reviews. The basic jist of what they seem to be saying is "Hey the Church has gone though hard times before and this is no different. If you think there are some big end times events happening here you're deluded and if you think there has ever been some plot to destroy the Church then you're just a conspiracy theorist."

So I guess all of the Pre-Vatican II Popes along with Our Lady and the seers she has appeared to are all conspiracy theorists. Very sad that these people are still blind to what is going on.

Carol, I thank you for this post. I agree that we need to set our priorities and stay the course.

 

Mario, Thank you. If I was doing a better job of praying right now I may feel differently but I also think that I am up to date. I read the Dictator Pope and I had some mixed feelings about doing that. I want to know some of the details obviously but I know that no one is perfect; no author, no pope, etc. If you do come across something interesting that you think is not well-known I would be interested it hearing about it. Thank you again.

Praetorian, If you don't mind I am making the same request to you or anyone else on the forum who does read the book, if you do come across something that you think that we may be interested in please share it with us.

Since I am not very familiar with Dr. Taylor Marshall and after reading the review that I posted above from Dave Armstrong, it occurred to me if Dr. Marshall is going down the road of say "TradCatKnight" or "Novus Ordo Watch" or the like? I hope that is not the case and I wonder what you think? I suppose that there will be many levels of types of criticism of the Church and personally I don't feel comfortable trying to put anyone in a particular group especially someone whom I am not very familiar with but I have also been weary of some of the things that Dr. Marshall has stated in the past. One particular concern of mine was when he was discussing abusive priests and appeared to be laughing. I did say to myself that the topic makes people very uncomfortable and that may have explained his reaction but it did not seem at all appropriate to me at the time and I have been more careful in his regard ever since.

 

But of course the infiltration has happened. Popes have clearly stated this.



The communists themselves have said it in so many words.

 

If it puts your mind at ease Dr. Marhsall is not going anywhere near the likes of "TradCatKnight" or "Novus Ordo Watch". At the end of the book he warns about Sedevacantism and says it is a dead end that provides no answers. The book is good and, as I mentioned, a general overview of things. I honestly didn't learn much new, but that is because I breathe this stuff daily. For a family member or someone who is concerned about what is going on in the Church, but not as familar with these things it would be a great resource. Everything is in one neat package and takes the reader through the past couple of hundred years of the development of this crisis. The writing style is easy to understand and a quick read.

There were a couple of things he wrote that I am not sure we have enough proof of, for example that Bugnini was a freemason. I know everybody says he was, but I don't know we have actual proof of that. I could be wrong on that point. These were relatively minor things though in relation to the entire book and it was not riddled with them. There were only one or two.

I think calling the book a "conspiracy theory" is a huge disservice. Not to mention untrue. As I said, it would mean calling men Like Pope St. Pius X and Pope Leo XIII conspiracy theorists. In fact it would mean calling them obsessed conspiracy theorists since they both devoted large portions of their papacies to rooting out the infiltrators.

An organization can be infiltrated without it being a conspiracy theory. I don't subscribe to conspiracy theories at all and I avoid them like the plague. That the Church has been infiltrated however is evident to anyone who has studied this. Those who do not admit this are blind, deluded or they are the infiltrators themselves.

Please don’t let his bloviating (he HATES anything trad Catholic) convince you to avoid Taylor’s new book.

 

Praetorian, Thank you. I trust your judgment or I would not have asked you. I also trust Bishop Schneider and he stated something similar to what you have stated here, "There were a couple of things he wrote that I am not sure we have enough proof of.". He stated it differently but that is how I understood him.

There is always a little "battle" between authors of similar subjects but it does seem that some of the critics of Dr. Marshall's new book may have been a bit too harsh.

 

If they are harsh then it shows what side they are on. They just don't like the narrative and they want to destroy the author as some kind of "kook". At this point we are so late in the game that if anyone is trying to cover up the crisis in the Church or say that it is something natural that the Church goes through every now and then throughout history then they are a part of the problem.

If a reviewer wants to critique Dr. Marshall's book on the grounds that they feel he was too direct in his assertions or did not supply the kinds of evidence they want I have no problem with that. But trying to frame the author as some kind of conspiracy theorist is just character assassination.

This was all foretold to us by Our Lady many times over hundreds of years. People who doubt this is a plan of the devil, in a very real way, to destroy the Church are denying the warnings of the Mother of God, a litany of Popes, and many Saints. Woe to them.
