Just to give my 2 cents as a physician in Washington State. The entire medical school bureaucracy has been selecting for physicians who are liberal minded for many decades now. Back in the late 1980’s when I was applying to medical school (Seattle) the formal interview process always asked questions about candidates’ positions on abortion. In my own case - having checked “Catholic” in the box on religious preference on the application and asking me directly as a pro-life advocate whether or not I would help a hypothetical teenage patient who is intent on aborting her baby I had to finally say that I’d refer her to a colleague who would assure her a safe medical procedure. I’m sure that I would not have been accepted to medical school if I insisted this hypothetical pregnant teenager be referred to a pro-life support clinic. So the system is biased towards accepting liberal-minded applicants. I’m sure it’s much worse today.

Fortunately though after 20 years of practice in a rural town in eastern Washington I can assure you that most physicians I know have a true respect for the human being and take the Hippocratic oath very seriously - do no harm.

In your case, it was an unfortunate formula you had to accept in order to become a doctor. The dilemma is that if we become too principled on the question, there will inevitably be a gradual disappearance of pro-life doctors. I suppose your answer would come under the definition of 'mental reservation', the 'lie of necessity', which is accounted for in moral theology. Maybe your getting the position kept out a potential abortionist.

Well at least he's been fired from his job. I don't know how much luck she'll have with the Canadian police.

She said the Canadian police were initially not helpful.

"I approached them and told them I was just assaulted and explained the situation," she wrote. "I showed them the video. They replied, ‘What do you want us to do about it?’"

She said their indifference and comment that it wasn't a "serious case of assault" kept her from filing a complaint. She had better luck later with other officers, and the police are now looking for the attacker.

"Two hours later, I started to feel pain in my shoulder where I’d been kicked and I contacted the police and filed a report with a different set of officers who were significantly more helpful, even offering a trauma support group after they visited my house and saw me still shaking with eyes red from crying. The police are still looking for my attacker and he has yet to be identified," she wrote.

I was speking in the sense that we each have seek to keep our hearts loving. We are told not to judge (in a certain way) that is harmful to the one judging. To love our enemies is essential, a command, and it is given for a reason. Our old society is dying, no going back, what we bring into the future is important, a pure, loving heart is one of them. I have no idea what is going to happen, but I seek to look to the Lord and to pray for those who are burdened and improsoned by sins that kill the soul.

    Peace

Yes,but the problem at the moment is not that we as a Church are taking a harsh and Judgemental Stance against those who decide to kill unborn babies. The problem is that we are concentrating, under this Pontificate, on the 'Really important nssies', such as Global warming. Far from being condematory to thos ewho kill th unborn we appear to be welcoming them. As Abortionists have for example being welcome as lay advisors to the Amazon Synod.

My concern with you post is Mark that you are pointing your salutory warnig finger in exactly the worng direction to which you should be pointing . You should be raising your voice to protect the unborn rather then to protect those who are killing our children.

Protect the Defenceless rather than those who are perfectly capable of defending themselves.

Defend the Defonseless unborn Mark. Raise your voice to Defend them.

You know in life the generally the very easiest thing to do is to smile, shrug your shoulders and say, 'Well that's alright then'

The very hardest thing to do is to say, 'No, that's wrong'. of 'What your doing is wrong'.

The one helps you get along. The other invites oppostion and persecution.

This is why our ancestors killed the Prophets.

I made the point on this thread that there have to be some absolutes, the defence of life at all stages being one of them. I am currently reading a book about the ethics and philosophy of the NAZI's (if they can be called by those terms). In it a senior general in the German army and devoted NAZI posted to Poland, made the following comment on the Poles' Catholicism:

' It is necessary to adopt a morality that seeks to deal with the actual demands made of us in our lives and this cannot be an unchangeable moral code because the eternal flux of life necessitates progressive and continuous adjustments. The ethics of a useful Life-Philosophy cannot and will not provide anything but a general orientation, an attitude towards life's problems. It is of little avail to educate a man according to rigid, preconceived rules..'

His attitude to Catholic 'rigidity' rang bells with me (a certain Pope and the Trads he so despises). The general's outlook seems to fit very well with the current thinking within the Church at the highest levels, i.e. that the Church can adjust or re-orientate its attitude to morality in line with individual and general circumstances and societal mores. The general would be pleased to know that some in the Church have 'caught up' with him.

    It looks that way...

rigidity...the new term for remaining faithful now...by Vatican standards.

language can be a powerful tool used for both good or evil.

Well Father Mark you could direct these pregnant women to crisis pregnancy centers. They are not judgemental but encourage girls to have their babies. An abortion does not solve the situation, it makes it worse. We live in a world of instant gratification and lies. But a CPC has trained staff that will give girls resources and aid. Most of them help out with formula and diapers. It is not the end of the world to have a baby, it is the beginning of a new life. That's a very good starting point.

It's an ever evolving slippery slope of comforting language isn't it? It all leads to one place, worshiping the creation rather than the creator.

Mark, I saw a campaign clip coming from Canada. There were representatives from seven parties making statements in response to citizens calling in asking questions. It was amazing to hear one nun call in and ask questions about several issues, one of which included abortion. The moderator felt impelled to remind the party reps not to discuss abortion; I guess it's a done deal in Canada. In fact, medical practitioners appear to have no "conscience protections" in that country. It is a slippery slope with no bottom, it seems.

Of course, there is a bottom: direct persecution of Christians. At least in that scenario, the witness of martyrdom can only strengthen the Church. Ah, the seed of the martyrs...

May it only be the grace and love of the Holy Spirit which nourishes our hearts and souls; in that way there is hope even for the blind! Dear Lady, intercede for us all and cover us with your Motherly Mantle!

Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3 More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

It really is an impossible situation. In Canada, our conservative party won't even consider debating a reduction in the wide open full term abortion laws. And to be honest I have a feeling even if brought forward in today's liberal climate especially with the youth whom it affects the most a reduction wouldn't even pass. Only a strong Christian running on reducing or eliminating abortion and getting a majority could it happen. (which is to say impossible)

Abortion is only a symptom of the greater loss of faith in the last 50 years. Soon as the first commandment fell for the majority, they all started falling quickly after. God really has to step in to fix things and soon. My wife and I just watched Unplanned, haven't cried that much in a long time.

Katfalls, my wonderful wife, Geralyn, is the office manager of such a center. She has such a caring heart (not that I'm playing favorites ). Sometimes she asks me to come and minister to the dads. The greatest joy is when moms return to show off their babies. It doesn't happen a lot, but one life saved brings its own reward!

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!

Exactly and that Demon is a cunning deceitful inhuman piece of garbage I think you can tell by my tone that I ain't happy over the past few weeks I have become infuriated by the deciet of every single political party in Northern Ireland to give an insight we have the two witches of eastwick representing sinn fien who have been hell bent on bringing the murder of innocence to the North wow what a legacy they will answer for on their death beds they broke all the rules of their brothers and sisters who faught the good fight now they sit back and allow the very government that they claim to pay no allegiance to rule a law on the land that freedom was fought for hypocritical low life the very leader of sinn fien was photograed in March this year in the USA with a banner saying brits out it should have read we are traitors
As for the dup they proclaim totally to be against Abortion so they can have our votes then try to bring back stormont to stop the legislation knowing all too well they would be too late why did they not recall stormont weeks ago

Truth in righteous anger, God bless you. Yes, many put down their lives for freedom and had they known it would have led to control of their country by these demons and witches, I'd say they would have regarded it as utterly false and futile. Abortion is their antisacrament and they have more to come. I'd be less cross with the DUP: their's is a sin of omission and arguably they were distracted by events that have been, for them, politically existential. Those who committed this vile and opportune betrayal of the unborn, both on the Sinn Fein and the British sides have no excuses, nor will they on that Dreadful Day.

Gosh, I know these women are sometimes in bad positions but you either see it as a life or not. I sometimes think that even some of those who profess to be prolife don’t see that child as an actual person. Because if they did, how could you see the woman who takes that child to the abortionist as anything other than complicit in murder? I know it is an unpopular view in our world but that is a life and if you are party to the extinction of that child, you have committed murder.... but understand that there is no sin too great for our Lord’s mercy. But we have to acknowledge our sin and repent.
