I grew up with a french Canadian family and the mother raised rabbits to sell them. Once in a while she served it at the table, passing it off as chicken. I always teased and asked why the chickens had four legs, but yeah it tasted like chicken. I don't know if wild rabbit tastes gamier?
I've never eaten a wild rabbit or a hare, but yeah you're probably right. Their diet has an effect on the taste of the meat, so around here, that's sagebrush. It might actually taste good. With a lot of game, marinating is key. We have to marinade our antelope for about 24 hours and it's always tender and delicious, otherwise it'd be like chewing on rubber.
From what I have come to understand we are not being asked to hoard because the end might be nigh. We are being advised that prices in the shops will be increasing and items we can afford now may be priced out of our reach in the coming months. Price rises are already evident here in the UK. Not to recommend hoarding but prudence in the face of inflation. I wish our countries would open their coal mines and steelworks again, so all this panic could be cancelled. In Ireland people are being made to feel the bogs are beauty spots and put on preservation lists so I hear, there goes the turf fires if EU gets their way.
Thank you for the tips about the rabbits. There are a lot of Canadian geese around here but I have heard that they are not a good food source.
I just saw this Russian TV video which is circulating in Rumble and Bitchute where it says that Ukraine will detonate a nuclear bomb in Mykolaiv (near Kherson) and blame it on the Russians... Agree! I don’t think there is much physical prep for my family ….. we live 15 miles from NYC. I have been urging my kids to get spiritually prepared now. Go to confession, pray, think about God, do “good”. And in end put trust in Lord. Thus us not a a give up sort of trust but I believe realistic. Tonight is What our local Marian Shrine calls Thankful Thursday- Confession and Adoration. As alway I invite as many as I can to come and sit before tge Eucharistic God and adore Him. It’s an hour of pure joy and peace. I hope some of my children join me.
Prepping only goes so far. For most people, it is not realistic to physically prep for every type of situation unless you have a bottomless income, acres of land and oodles of storage space. As for bugging out, you can only take so much with you, even if you have a primo 5th wheel or toy hauler camper. Where I live, this is how a lot of people would react. They'd load up their campers and head out to the mountains and public lands. It wouldn't take long for them to deplete the wildlife population down to nothing, and then what....
Many things are conceivable and difficult to classify. There are other sources that claim: The main reason why Cherson is being evacuated - Ukraine has been shelling the dam for weeks. If the Kakhovka dam is blown up, the floods would destroy the center of Kherson. And Russia should be blamed for that. Regardless of that, I recently read in a small forum from a user who claims to have insider knowledge and who was reasonably trustworthy up to now that a major event is to take place in the next 1-3 weeks. Wait, pray and hope for the Warning coming soon.
Thanks, Julia. When I had stated Geralyn and I don't plan on hoarding, I was expressing the thought that if we were amply prepared but neighbors were without, we would not keep it all to ourselves, but would share with those in need. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
To see how things have changed in just the last couple of months is astounding. Six months ago, I purchased two 2lb. bags of powdered eggs, mostly for camping, but also because I could see the writing on the wall. At the time they cost me $45-$50 and now that same order would be $100.
Prepping to the degree that is feasible is always prudent, whether it's weather or civil related. I used to live in Florida, and hurricane Wilma turned me into a prepper in 2005. My 2nd child at the time was 7 weeks old. We could not make formula. I did have three 5 gallon gas cans though, so we loaded up the car and went to my mom's in SC. After that, we changed. We hunt, fish, go camping off grid for days on end. We probably have 4 to 7 months of food and water depending on whether or not electric is available.... I have the means to also provide for others, but I also have the means, tools, mindset and training to protect my family, liberty and property. Living where I do, being somewhat self sustaining is a necessity. We've had blizzards in recent years that have shut down everything for at least 5 days for example. Things for a lot of people will go back to how life was 150 years ago when seasonal canning was the norm. Heck my mom canned things when I was young, i wish I had paid attention.
Canning is a marvelous blessing. Geralyn and I have opened our canned beef or chicken 2 years later- still good. We'll be canning 14 quarts of applesauce at the beginning of November; a fond memory for our kids who would chip in and help each fall. It was a difficult season for the garden this year; still there were tossed salads most days July through September.
Rice, Pasta, canned meat. Cheese, butter, flour last forever. They are all still cheap. It takes a little bit of effort to stock such things , but not very much and very little money.
I was in my opinion one of Ireland's best prepped prepper for quite a while, food, lots to burn, gardens, pollytunnel, back up off grip system, the list goes on, maybe too much, but a few months ago my families life was almost turned upside down, we had to move out of our house, while works get done on it. we had to move into a tiny house in the city with just enough to live on, very little prepping now. But I get a stronger feeling that God just wants me to trust in him completely and he will take care of everything else. To some degree I feel like we are in Egypt, except its not so bad, we are kind of enjoying the change, but also look forward to returning home, but it won't be this year. I am also more or less oblivious to what is going on in the news lately, been so busy and took the opportunity to tune out and pray more, I think this has also led to the peace I am feeling. Jesus I trust in thee.
We've built ours up by degrees, bit by bit. Before you know it, you realize you need more shelving. My wife has perfected her own method and recopies for making jerky. I just need to fill my antelope and deer tags this season. Well dried jerky is pretty hearty stuff, tastes awesome depending on how you flavor it and lasts awhile. We just use our oven. Put the oven on low for a long time and hang the strips of meat on the grills with toothpicks. Toss them into zip loc bags with desiccant packs, easy peasy.
You are brilliant. I think Our Lady is asking us to do what we an with what we can. We are all in different countries with different economic and social and cultural situations. situations. All that is asked is simple prudence. Not only for ourselves but for those we love and those around us. She would have had to do as much in her own day.## For instance knowing how to bake bread and knowing how to do so is a big plus. and oh so simple. A bag of flour some water and a little sugar...why not? It's not rocket science and costs very, very little.
