(I apologize if this topic has already been brought up) I've been thinking that God at this point in time brought to light the unspeakable horrors of Kermit Gosnell's abortion mill in order that Americans cannot hide behind the excuse of ignorance any longer. Since abortion takes place behind closed doors, out of sight and out of mind, since its victims have no voice of their own to be heard, people can go on living their daily lives as if the abortion holocaust is not taking place. But the national attention focused on the Gosnell trial leaves us with no excuse. The violence and brutality of abortion were abundantly made clear. The incoherence of laws that permit murder as long as the baby is in the womb but not if the baby is outside the womb was manifested. America was given a final chance to reject the evil of abortion. Sadly it appears we as a nation have ignored this opportunity. Now comes the judgment.
I'm just wondering where you saw it getting national attention. If I hadn't been connected to pro life groups on FB I never would have heard of it. Our media already admitted that they are not going to cover it as that may "jeopardize women's rights". I commented on it to my MIL who said there was no such thing as late term abortion and still thinks abortion can only be done in the first trimester (which by the way she is pro-abortion and voted for Obama). I tried to explain to her that Obama opened it up to full term and that many were killed to full term. She didn't believe me so I respectfully asked her to look it all up for herself. But anyway, she is typical most secular people i have spoken with on this subject...
There was a flurry of journalistic shaming after Kirsten Powers ripped into them, and then some half-hearted reporting. But there was reporting, in print and on T.V.
I thought the same thing about the Gosnell trial. All of a sudden, it seemed that light was shining in some very dark places. It was a disgusting story, but then, abortion is a disgusting business. At least for once, there was no way to spin it as "choice." Still, willful ignorance continues to rule the day. How could this NOT bring judgment upon us?
The website LifeNews.com gives news about gains and losses in the pro-life movement. On fast days when I feel like giving in to breaking a fast, I navigate over to that site and there is so much to make reparation for, it motivates me to not give in. The important thing is not to get discouraged. Our nation has enormous sins, but there is also good. The media wants us to believe that sin will win the day so why resist, but we know from our parishes and forums like this and EWTN that there are more like-minded people than we can imagine.
I just found this article: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics...-paying-attention-to-the-gosnell-case/275756/ Even if it shows up in the news most people seem not to care too much. I know that before I became Catholic abortion wasn't really on my radar. I was personally opposed to most abortions, but honestly when it came to voting, economic and national security issues were more important.
I first read about the trial in the Washington Post, I think. I wasn't aware of the story until it hit the "mainstream" press.
