I always see Fulton Sheen as a modern-day John the Baptist. A man of deep faith, a great thinker, theologian, and intellectual with an exceptionally powerful voice that marked the lives of many believers and non-believers alike. A voice that did not cry out in the desert, but on television—bringing Christ closer to every believer for the first time through the small screen. His recordings remain as a lasting testament of faith, and I would say his messages bear even stronger witness today than when they were “current.”

I have always found it fascinating how God raises up saints, and when you look at them, they differ so much in character, philosophy, and intellect. Some might be called rebellious, some carry themselves like politicians or actors, and some with their appearance or speech might not even pass as farmers… yet each one shines and, in their own way, bears witness to Christ.

Without any doubt, for me personally—because I truly enjoy watching him he is the greatest American figure of the 20th century, bar none. His messages are timeless because they are deeply rooted in faith in Christ. If I could, I would mandate that all Catholic schools show his series to students, because rarely does anything speak about the truth in such a gentle, humorous, yet penetrating way as he does.

A great man and a great saint.
We can only thank God for sending us such a witness of faith and such a bishop.

I do feel Sheen's talks were made to be heard today. Exactly what we need to hear.

The Miracle — James Fulton Engstrom (2010)
After a "beautifully easy" pregnancy, Bonnie Engstrom went into labor with James Fulton on the evening of September 15, 2010. A rare true knot had formed in the umbilical cord and tightened during the final stages of labor. (America Magazine)
The infant had no heartbeat for 61 minutes. (Roman Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge) Just as emergency room personnel were about to pronounce him dead, James Fulton began to breathe and his heart rate rose to a normal level for a newborn. (America Magazine)
The mechanism of intercession: After praying for more than an hour for Archbishop Fulton Sheen to intercede, James had a pulse. (Catholic)
Despite dire prognoses for his future, the child thrived. The case was sent to the Congregation for Saints' Causes in December 2011 and reviewed by panels of medical experts, theologians, and the cardinals and bishops of the congregation. The miracle received a unanimous recommendation from them all. (America Magazine)
A seven-member panel of medical experts advising the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints gave unanimous approval of the miracle. (Aleteia)
