Yes, I think we have to be a little child like to accept these things. To be open to them but not go too much over board. With a certain gentle loveness. But I do look for ,'Confirmations', I think you might call them the thorns with the roses. Little nudges to show me these things are true. If I don;t get such nudges , its fine, they might still be true. But I do so love it when I get , 'Confirmations'.

I guess you could call them God incidences. :)

Going into the front door of Church today for mass and confession (Saturday , after Sunday is my high point of the week for this) I was suddenly hit with the strongest temptation form the devil against Faith. His actual words to me were ,

'Why do you bother with this mummery?!!

Yes that was his actual word, 'Mummery'. It's funny such a very old fashioned word.. 'Mummery'. :D:D:D

    Definition of mummery
    plural mummeries
    1 : a performance by mummers
2 : a ridiculous, hypocritical, or pretentious ceremony or performance

But you know it really hit me hard. It is not an intellectual argument but one to the heart. A feeling of utter desolation as though my spiritual world just rocked for moments, like getting kicked in the teeth. I actually stopped in my tracked for a few moments fighting this, it was just overwhelming strong. A feeling of utter and complete desolation. Through God's grace I managed to walk on . But then I heard a gentle voice calling me. It was St Jude. There is the most wonderful wooden old statue of him at the doorway and I always touch his foot and say, 'Hi', on the way in.

    He was calling and said,

'Padraig are you not saying hello?'

You know suddenly I was filled with joy and totally over the temptation. I had forgotten St Jude but he had not forgotten me. :):)

Isn't it wonderful how little things like this can save us? I am fond of Praying to St Jude at work when I can't find peoples Health Records. :)

    St Jude pray for us.

I notice when people are dying they get these kind of temptations, very, very strongly. Saint Therese of Liseaux got hit very, very badly by this on her deathbed. These kind of temptations are not to the head but to the heart. A tremendous feeling of desolation; like the Garden of Gethsemane.

I got another confirmation during the week on something that happened to me years ago, This time also involving the devil.

I was driving a taxi late one night when I picked up a number of young men and women who wanted driven to a house near me in the North Belfast. I got a very, very bad feeling about these folks as soon as they got into the car. I was wearing a very heavy Irish Aran woolen jumper and there is no way they could have known I was wearing religious medals. But one of them reached out and pulled my medals out and they made fun of these all the way I drove them home.

Anyway the house i left them too , were they lived has had a very bad reputation in the area, it is known as the devil or ghost house and lay abandoned for many years after. But a few years ago a landlord done if up and rented it again as apartments. I always get a chill passing it, such a bad spot.

I got confirmation during the week of how bad it is when a guy right outside the front door got his stabbed to death outside the front door by two guys living in the devil house.

I had a dream last week about a gentleman who lived and died somewhere in Eastern Europe back in the 1800's. I nave know how much truth there is in such dreams , but they always seem so vivid. :).

Anyway this guy was a real saint. He reminded of Benedict Joseph Labre, the Patron Saint of Tramps. He never settled long in the one place but travelled from shrine to shrine. I saw him praying at one very beautiful Marian Shrine. I saw some of the houses in the area, they reminded me of Alpine Houses ,very steep roofs and beautiful wood. Any last he was staying in a Parochial House. The Parish Priest was a very good sensible man. The guy in my dreams died there of a lung condition. They say that people with lung cancer drown at the end. This is what happened to this poor guy , he was also embarassed about all the stuff coming up from his chest and that he could not clean himself.

As he lay in bad there was a great noise and racket outside the house and the priest and several others rushed out to see what was going on. I saw that the devil had often attacked this poor dying man and that this was the last throw of the devils dice as he died alone.

I think there are so many hidden saints like this. I find it so touching to get a glimpse of their lives.

How true was the dream? Well you know I have no idea.:) Perhaps someday I will know, but meantime I take what good I can from such things.:)

Yes, this is why First Saturdays can be such an incredible Grace I think. Also, consecration to Saint Michael the Archangel as well. Succor us in our last struggle!

The devil, I think is given differing levels of power over different people. For instance St Peter was solemnly warned that the devil had been given special permission to try him (he being first Pope)

I think for some people the devil is not just allowed permission to have his last shot at the point of death (which he very often is) but sometimes at a certain period ( or periods) in life or even (as in the case of Padre Pio or the Cure of Ars) permission
    as an ongoing act.

One group of people who come right face to face with evil, for instance are , I think young soldiers in time of War. It is one thing facing evil as an abstract notion but another to see these things face to face. This can pretty well kill some people, this shattering of innocence. As again, a girl who is raped or a child, molested.

Yes, I agree. Also, I would add that I believe that those who suffer terrible temptations or torments are granted incredible Graces as well as your examples prove.
My brother experienced great evil in Haiti as a young soldier there in the 90's and it has impacted him most severely even now. Haiti is a hot bed for human trafficking and horrible abuses even still. The government there does not require a birth certificate when one is born so it is an especially tempting place for those who have evil in their hearts.

I read the story of this Saint a while ago and was very intrigued. When news spread that a Saint had died in Rome , his parents who had no idea where he was, pieced together the info and realised he was their son.

Then, I was in Rome this year in Monti.

The church near my apartment was Santa Maria.

I went to Ash Wed Mass and turned to look at a tomb in a glass case during Mass. People had posted petitions written on paper through letter box type holes on each side so I was intrigued.

I was delighted to realise it was Saint Benedict Joseph Labre and I knew his story. It made my visit very special.

One Catholic Missionary told me that on getting off the plain he got hit right up the face with the evil that is there and it stayed his whole time on the island. Other Catholic missionaries to Haiti report the same thing.

It is the same if you travel from country to country you can tell at once that each has it's own spiritual atmosphere.

Even in a big city , if you travel round you will find and area or area of pure evil, like say a Red Light District. Soho in London is a good example. I have heard also in New York there is an area in the Bronx like this. None of this should surprise us.

I see the Mexican Hierarchy recently conducted an exorcism of the entire country.

Sometimes you can get this in the strangest places. One time in the idle of the forest in the middle of nowhere I can across some really ancient standing stone, I think they were older than the pyramids. It became clear to me that they had had blood sacrifice to demons their thousands of years ago when a very low level demon followed me through the woods for a while still hungering for blood. He took a most unusual form, I suppose that is how he used to show himself to the ancient druids. But it had very little power left. I suppose the coming of St Patrick and the Church drained them . He really did throw the serpents out.

On the other hand going through the woods or mountains it is clear that a hermit lived there at one time, someone very holy or perhaps and ancient monastery leaving no trace, but you can feel the holiness still remaining.

Even in old ruins of Churches you can often feel the power of the Sacrifice of the Mass having been said there. I suspect some of these had never been deconsecrated.
