I hope you are wrong too but I don't think you are. I was driving with my father in the car when the news came on the radio. I was young. I didn't get it. But my father explained just what the stakes were--how close we were to the unthinkable. Today it seems like everyone is sleepwalking around this dire situation. Ho hum. Yawn. We really are in a strange place as a culture.
You are right ! Back when we were young, we had Civil Defense drills and shelters. I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis vividly. I remember praying over it and being very scared.
I think the current moment is very similar to 1962 because in addition to the imminent risk of nuclear war there is an ongoing synodal process that can change the face of the Church (Synodal Process) while at the time of the missile crisis we had the Second Vatican Council.
We learned about it in school (I was born in '65) and I remember the teacher saying it was a bad time...... So many people my age have, I think, filed such things away as something that could never happen again. History was something boring, to be endured in school and then ignored. We hear that mantra now all the louder, "Never again", and yet here we are....and no one notices. Strange indeed.
Interestingly, the 1960s started with the concealment of the third secret and ended with the suppression of the Tridentine Mass (1969), while the current decade began with the suppression of all Holy Masses (due to the lockdows in 2020/2021) and now passes through the suppression of the Tridentine Rite (2023).

The real meat is in the Conclusion. The RAND geniuses, who never get it wrong, of course, advise that a rapid announcement of retreat is 'politically impossible' and that events need to be allowed to sink in. In other words, the poor old Ukrainians must continue to die in order to save face for Joe Biden. Joe wouldn't need to wait too long or the Russians might have taken over the Biden family business.
This sickens me to my soul. This whole despicable maneuvering. The US is no hero in this. They did everything they could to provoke Putin. The hubris is staggering. Poor Ukraine.
The US is fighting its proxy war against Russia to the last drop of Ukrainian blood. A daughter of mine says that she knows a Ukrainian who seems to accept this as the reality.
Zelensky says it is "dangerous" for Americans to question the amount of aid being given to Ukraine because "if Ukraine loses, Russia is going to enter Baltic states, NATO member states and the U.S. will have to send their sons and daughters to war and they will be dying." This man has evil intentions. Notice he only talks of money and war, never peace.
