Did you know the Novus Ordo uses a phrase that Scripture associates with idolatry?

Discussion in 'Church Critique' started by sparrow, Apr 3, 2025.

  1. But these. Words that are odious to Jesus instead of a true consecration, also have other things that happen at the same time...yes we are in that era, yes, Vatican 2 stripped alot of goodness from the Mass, but

people read a paragraph or 2 of their work and think, oh it happened.
When you see what awaits us, with the changes to come, then you will know the abomination of desolation will happen. ALL proof of Jesus and Mary will be removed. It will be beyond disgust.
It is starting but no we aren't there yet.

I just read the other comments after I wrote this...I'm glad to see people realizing the truth.

  2. I just wrote that before I read your reply...

As far as I know, there are two forums on the English-speaking internet that call themselves traditional Catholic. Both of them contain a lot of the poison you describe. One has clear anti-Christian tendencies (pride, anger, lack of charity), the other one is not even Catholic but promotes traditional sects that call themselves Catholic.

I often think, for a Christian reader searching the truth on the internet, these forums must be off-putting and leading them away from traditional Catholicism. In real life, based on experience, in an SSPX- or FSSP-parish for example, you will not really find these rad trads. Instead, one will find people who are earnestly striving for holiness.

I am afraid that the devil is everywhere in the ascendent at the moment and had very, very, very great power indeed, including for deception.

The religious orders are a very good example of this, he pretty well seems to be running nearly them all, not just the Jesuits.

I am afraid it is true to at least some extent with Trad Catholics. He just tends to do it in a different way. The most dangerous thing for Trads is to consider themselves immune simply because they are Traditional. I am afraid they are not. He just takes them down a different Dark Road.

I don.t mean to be depressing or cynical in writing that. But I suspect it is true..The great danger for Trads is to consider themselves better than or more immune than other Catholics to Satan. I am afraid they are not. He just grabs them in another way. But still he grabs them.
I think there are two great temptations for Trads at the moment. The first is the sin of pride, of thinking of themselves as better than anyone else. The second I think is to over intellectualise everything. Or to put it another way, to think things to death.

I see a lot of this as a reaction to the stagnant air in the church currently. Everyone is frustrated and acts out according to their point of view, but clearly it isn't a reason to eat each other alive. I still think it bizarre that human hands are mentioned during the consecration, but that's my perspective.

I like your post. I know you have been involved in traditional parishes so you know a lot of things, and this little post is not only meant for you but also for silent readers.
Many people here in our SSPX-parish, including myself, are going through immense personal tribulations. I haven't encountered anyone whom I would think of as a proud. We are here because we think traditional Catholicism is the best way to achieve holiness, but the attacks on us are hard. By that I mean mainly personal struggles in the family life, many people here have financial troubles, we recently had a young baby in our parish that died, etc.
I don't see pride here. But I do see it on the internet in so-called traditional Catholic forums. Many of the posters there do not even come across as Christian. They have little charity, humility, patience, kindness, understanding and wisdom. Those internet forums paint the picture of what many outsiders think about traditional Catholics. It is sad. I do not post on these forums. In the English-speaking internet, I am only here.
Again, in real life, in a real SSPX or FSSP parish, you find lovely young families, going through struggles and striving for holiness. I agree, though, pride is a danger for traditional Catholics. I think it was Fr. Ripperger who pointed that out in a broadcast, too.

Stay in the Barque. Avoid groups that are non-canonically joined to the Catholic Church. Simple.

Yes, I totally agree. The SSPX and FSSP, etc., are canonically joined to the Holy Catholic Church.
But there are groups that are not. I call them right-wing Protestants. They call themselves Catholic but are not. These should be avoided.

I tend to look at things from a mystical supernatural perspective. This rather than an intellectual one. From the heart rather than from the head.

I go to mass with a huge hunger for the Eucharist and Novus Ordo or not I go away satisfied/ That is enough for me.

I’m not sure that the SSPX has canonical
status. All of the Masses are illicit. That’s my understanding.

The SSPX has canonical status. Some in Rome call it an “irregular” status, a definition that never existed prior to the SSPX and thus a dubious distinction at best, but it is indeed a canonical status.

Their Mass is no more nor less “illicit” than every Novus Ordo Mass that uses Extraordinary Ministers at every Mass.

The Vatican clarified the latter was a liturgical abuse which must be eliminated in a document 20 years ago:

Therefore its continued use makes every Novus Ordo Mass with routine use of Extraordinary Ministers (without the just causes noted above in the Vatican document) illicit.

If one has a choice between an “illicit” SSPX TLM and your average illicit Novus Ordo Mass, the choice is fairly simple.

The theology expressed in the TLM is far superior to that used in the “banal, fabricated” Novus Ordo liturgy.

“Banal, fabricated” is a direct quote from Cardinal Ratzinger, in his comments on the Novus Ordo liturgy.

There is this analogy I believe St. Paisios used to tell people frequently in regards to problems in the church. He said if I ask a fly to show me what is good around the monastery it wont know because it is focused on finding filth. If I asked a bee to show me filth around the monastery it couldn't because it only seeks out what is beautiful. Essentially guiding people to focus on what is good, to be like the bee. Your post reminds me of this, well done.

BTW, the SSPX has its own hierarchy.
I remember reading that there was an incident in the Midwest, US, where an SSPX priest was being investigated for abuse. The case stayed within the hierarchy of the SSPX.

I have enjoyed studying up on Saint Paisios down the years. Saint Silouan is good too. I think maybe they were both contemporaries. The Orthodox declare saints very, very quickly . It is very striking. I still have a childlike love of stories about the supernatural and miracles. The stories about their lives abound with such tales.

Silouan the Athonite (Russian: Силуан Афонский) also sometimes referred to as Silouan of Athos, Saint Silvanus the Athonite or Staretz Silouan (January 17, 1866 – September 24, 1938) was an Eastern Orthodox monk of Russian origin, born Simeon Ivanovich Antonov who was a poet and monk of the St. Panteleimon Monastery.[1] The life and teachings of Saint Silouan were brought to light by his disciple, Archimandrite Sophrony (aka Saint Sophrony the Athonite, Saint Sophrony of Essex) in his classic book Saint Silouan the Athonite.

The SSPX was established by a Catholic Archbishop, His Excellency Archbishop Lefebvre, with the explicit permission of the Holy Father. Your understanding that all of the Masses are illicit is wrong. Pope Francis himself has clarified that Catholics can fulfil their Sunday-obligation by attending SSPX-Masses.

No doubt, God is really there in the Novus Ordo Mass. We have several eucharistic miracles which confirm that, for example Legnica, Sokolka, Buenoes Aires.

At the same time, the Novus Ordo is a danger to the faith. This was indicated by Cardinal Ottaviani, and is now evidenced by the ageing population of Novus Ordo-attendees and by pew research. Research shows that many Novus Ordo-Catholics (not all, of course - this is not personal to anyone on the forum) do not believe what the Holy Catholic Church believes.

An example of this is the widespread unbelief of Novus Ordo parishioners in the real presence of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. This is not only backed by statistics, but one can witness it in the lack of reverence of some parishioners at Novus Ordo-Masses.
