    Lectionary: 383

    Reading 1 Hos 2:16, 17c-18, 21-22
    Thus says the LORD:
    I will allure her;
    I will lead her into the desert
    and speak to her heart.
    She shall respond there as in the days of her youth,
    when she came up from the land of Egypt.

    On that day, says the LORD,
    She shall call me “My husband,”
    and never again “My baal.”

    I will espouse you to me forever:
    I will espouse you in right and in justice,
    in love and in mercy;
    I will espouse you in fidelity,
    and you shall know the LORD.

    Responsorial Psalm 145:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
    R. (8a) The Lord is gracious and merciful.
    Every day will I bless you,
    and I will praise your name forever and ever.
    Great is the LORD and highly to be praised;
    his greatness is unsearchable.
    R. The Lord is gracious and merciful.
    Generation after generation praises your works
    and proclaims your might.
    They speak of the splendor of your glorious majesty
    and tell of your wondrous works.
    R. The Lord is gracious and merciful.
    They discourse of the power of your terrible deeds
    and declare your greatness.
    They publish the fame of your abundant goodness
    and joyfully sing of your justice.
    R. The Lord is gracious and merciful.
    The LORD is gracious and merciful,
    slow to anger and of great kindness.
    The LORD is good to all
    and compassionate toward all his works.
    R. The Lord is gracious and merciful.

    Alleluia See 2 Tm 1:10
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death
    and brought life to light through the Gospel.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 9:18-26
    While Jesus was speaking, an official came forward,
    knelt down before him, and said,
    “My daughter has just died.
    But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
    Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples.
    A woman suffering hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him
    and touched the tassel on his cloak.
    She said to herself, “If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured.”
    Jesus turned around and saw her, and said,
    “Courage, daughter! Your faith has saved you.”
    And from that hour the woman was cured.

    When Jesus arrived at the official’s house
    and saw the flute players and the crowd who were making a commotion,
    he said, “Go away! The girl is not dead but sleeping.”
    And they ridiculed him.
    When the crowd was put out, he came and took her by the hand,
    and the little girl arose.
    And news of this spread throughout all that land.

    Feast day of Saint Maria Teresa Goretti, Virgin, martyr, died 1902

    Maria Teresa Goretti is an Italian virgin-martyr of the Catholic Church, and one of the youngest saints to be canonized. She was born to a farming family. Her father died when she was nine, and they had to share a house with another family, the Serenellis. Maria took over household duties while her mother, brothers, and sister worked in the fields.

    One afternoon, Alessandro, the Serenellis' twenty-year-old son, made sexual advances to her. When she refused to submit to him, he stabbed her fourteen times. She was taken to the hospital but she died forgiving him. He was arrested, convicted, and jailed. During imprisonment, he repented. After 27 years he was released from prison and visited her mother to beg forgiveness, which she granted. He later became a lay brother in a monastery, dying in 1970. She was beatified in 1947, and canonized in 1950. She is especially venerated in the Congregation of the Passion (Passionists).

    Tuesday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 384

    Reading 1 Hos 8:4-7, 11-13
    Thus says the LORD:
    They made kings in Israel, but not by my authority;
    they established princes, but without my approval.
    With their silver and gold they made
    idols for themselves, to their own destruction.
    Cast away your calf, O Samaria!
    my wrath is kindled against them;
    How long will they be unable to attain
    innocence in Israel?
    The work of an artisan,
    no god at all,
    Destined for the flames—
    such is the calf of Samaria!

    When they sow the wind,
    they shall reap the whirlwind;
    The stalk of grain that forms no ear
    can yield no flour;
    Even if it could,
    strangers would swallow it.

    When Ephraim made many altars to expiate sin,
    his altars became occasions of sin.
    Though I write for him my many ordinances,
    they are considered as a stranger’s.
    Though they offer sacrifice,
    immolate flesh and eat it,
    the LORD is not pleased with them.
    He shall still remember their guilt
    and punish their sins;
    they shall return to Egypt.

    Responsorial Psalm 115:3-4, 5-6, 7ab-8, 9-10
    R. (9a) The house of Israel trusts in the Lord.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    Our God is in heaven;
    whatever he wills, he does.
    Their idols are silver and gold,
    the handiwork of men.
    R. The house of Israel trusts in the Lord.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    They have mouths but speak not;
    they have eyes but see not;
    They have ears but hear not;
    they have noses but smell not.
    R. The house of Israel trusts in the Lord.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    They have hands but feel not;
    they have feet but walk not.
    Their makers shall be like them,
    everyone that trusts in them.
    R. The house of Israel trusts in the Lord.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.

    Alleluia Jn 10:14
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    I am the good shepherd, says the Lord;
    I know my sheep, and mine know me.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 9:32-38
    A demoniac who could not speak was brought to Jesus,
    and when the demon was driven out the mute man spoke.
    The crowds were amazed and said,
    “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”
    But the Pharisees said,
    “He drives out demons by the prince of demons.”

    Jesus went around to all the towns and villages,
    teaching in their synagogues,
    proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,
    and curing every disease and illness.
    At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them
    because they were troubled and abandoned,
    like sheep without a shepherd.
    Then he said to his disciples,
    “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
    so ask the master of the harvest
    to send out laborers for his harvest.”

    Feast day of Blessed Ralph Milner and Roger Dickenson, Martyrs, died July 7, 1591
    Ralph Milner was an elderly farmer with eight children from the distict of Flacsted in Hampshire. Ralph was a member of the Church of England, as that was the state religion and Catholicism was outlawed. Ralph became interested in the Catholic faith due to the good influence of his Catholic neighbors. Ralph took instructions in the Faith and became a Catholic. On the very day of his First Communion, Ralph was seized and imprisoned. Though he remained in prison for a number of years, he was granted parole. During his parole, Ralph obtained donations to give to the people still in prison. Not only that, Ralph helped the Catholic priests who came to the area on mission to evade detection. One priest, Father Roger Dickenson was sent on mission in 1583. Ralph helped Father Roger move about the area easily because of Ralph’s knowledge of the countryside. Despite their care, both Father Roger and Ralph were arrested and put on trial for being Catholic. The judge took pity on Ralph due to his age and looked for any pretext to free him. The judge urged Ralph to just go to the Anglican Church to pray and then he would free him citing his reconciliation with the Church of England. However, Ralph said no, he would prefer to share the sentence of his friend, Father Dickenson. Both men were executed at Winchester on July 7, 1591.
    Please pray for us, Blessed Ralph Milner and Father Dickenson.

    Wednesday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 385

    Reading 1 Hos 10:1-3, 7-8, 12
    Israel is a luxuriant vine
    whose fruit matches its growth.
    The more abundant his fruit,
    the more altars he built;
    The more productive his land,
    the more sacred pillars he set up.
    Their heart is false,
    now they pay for their guilt;
    God shall break down their altars
    and destroy their sacred pillars.
    If they would say,
    “We have no king”—
    Since they do not fear the LORD,
    what can the king do for them?

    The king of Samaria shall disappear,
    like foam upon the waters.
    The high places of Aven shall be destroyed,
    the sin of Israel;
    thorns and thistles shall overgrow their altars.
    Then they shall cry out to the mountains, “Cover us!”
    and to the hills, “Fall upon us!”

    “Sow for yourselves justice,
    reap the fruit of piety;
    break up for yourselves a new field,
    for it is time to seek the LORD,
    till he come and rain down justice upon you.”

    Responsorial Psalm 105:2-3, 4-5, 6-7
    R. (4b) Seek always the face of the Lord.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    Sing to him, sing his praise,
    proclaim all his wondrous deeds.
    Glory in his holy name;
    rejoice, O hearts that seek the LORD!
    R. Seek always the face of the Lord.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    Look to the LORD in his strength;
    seek to serve him constantly.
    Recall the wondrous deeds that he has wrought,
    his portents, and the judgments he has uttered.
    R. Seek always the face of the Lord.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.
    You descendants of Abraham, his servants,
    sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!
    He, the LORD, is our God;
    throughout the earth his judgments prevail.
    R. Seek always the face of the Lord.
    or:
    R. Alleluia.

    Alleluia Mk 1:15
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    The Kingdom of God is at hand:
    repent and believe in the Gospel.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 10:1-7
    Jesus summoned his Twelve disciples
    and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out
    and to cure every disease and every illness.
    The names of the Twelve Apostles are these:
    first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew;
    James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
    Philip and Bartholomew,
    Thomas and Matthew the tax collector;
    James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus;
    Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot
    who betrayed Jesus.

    Jesus sent out these Twelve after instructing them thus,
    “Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town.
    Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
    As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’”

    Feast day of Saint Grimbald, Abbot of New Minster, died 903
    Grimbald became a Benedictine monk about 840, was ordained priest in 870, and was Abbot of Saint-Bertin. He met King Alfred on his way to Rome in 885. As a well-known scholar, he went to Rheims in 886. Upon the advice of Archbishop Eldred of Canterbury and through Fulk of Rheims, Alfred invited Grimbald to England in 887. Grimbald arrived in England and declined the see of Canterbury, preferring to remain a monk. He became the Abbot of New Minster Abbey at Winchester appointed by King Edward the Elder. Grimbald is credited with restoring learning to England.

    Thursday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 386

    Reading 1 Hos 11:1-4, 8e-9
    Thus says the LORD:
    When Israel was a child I loved him,
    out of Egypt I called my son.
    The more I called them,
    the farther they went from me,
    Sacrificing to the Baals
    and burning incense to idols.
    Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk,
    who took them in my arms;
    I drew them with human cords,
    with bands of love;
    I fostered them like one
    who raises an infant to his cheeks;
    Yet, though I stooped to feed my child,
    they did not know that I was their healer.

    My heart is overwhelmed,
    my pity is stirred.
    I will not give vent to my blazing anger,
    I will not destroy Ephraim again;
    For I am God and not man,
    the Holy One present among you;
    I will not let the flames consume you.

    Responsorial Psalm 80:2ac and 3b, 15-16
    R. (4b) Let us see your face, Lord, and we shall be saved.
    O shepherd of Israel, hearken.
    From your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth.
    Rouse your power.
    R. Let us see your face, Lord, and we shall be saved.
    Once again, O LORD of hosts,
    look down from heaven, and see:
    Take care of this vine,
    and protect what your right hand has planted,
    the son of man whom you yourself made strong.
    R. Let us see your face, Lord, and we shall be saved.

    Alleluia Mk 1:15
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    The Kingdom of God is at hand:
    repent and believe in the Gospel.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 10:7-15
    Jesus said to his Apostles:
    “As you go, make this proclamation:
    ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
    Cure the sick, raise the dead,
    cleanse the lepers, drive out demons.
    Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.
    Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;
    no sack for the journey, or a second tunic,
    or sandals, or walking stick.
    The laborer deserves his keep.
    Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it,
    and stay there until you leave.
    As you enter a house, wish it peace.
    If the house is worthy,
    let your peace come upon it;
    if not, let your peace return to you.
    Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words--
    go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet.
    Amen, I say to you, it will be more tolerable
    for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment
    than for that town.”

    Feast day of Saint Augustine Rong and other martyrs of the Faith in China to number at least 120 martyrs, the nineteenth century martyrs are listed:
    In the nineteenth century in China the Jiaqing Emperor published numerous and severe decrees against Catholics and Christianity. The first was issued in 1805. Two edicts of 1811 were directed against those among the Chinese who were studying to receive sacred orders, and against priests who were propagating the Christian religion. A decree of 1813 exonerated apostates from punishment – that is, Christians who spontaneously declared that they would abandon their faith – but all others were to be dealt with harshly.

    In this period the following underwent martyrdom:

    Saint Peter Wu, a Chinese lay catechist. Born of a pagan family, he received baptism in 1796 and passed the rest of his life proclaiming the truth of the Christian religion. All attempts to make him apostatize were in vain. The sentence having been pronounced against him, he was strangled on November 7, 1814.

    Saint Joseph Zhang Dapeng, a lay catechist, and a merchant. Baptized in 1800, he had become the heart of the mission in the city of Guiyang. He was imprisoned, and then strangled to death on March 12, 1815.

    Also in the same year, there came two other decrees, with which approval was given to the conduct of the Viceroy of Sichuan who had beheaded Monsignor Dufresse, of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and some Chinese Christians. As a result, there was a worsening of the persecution.

    The following martyrs belong to this period:

    Saint Gabriel-Taurin Dufresse, M.E.P., Bishop. He was arrested on May 18, 1815, taken to Chengdu, condemned and executed on September 14, 1815.

    Saint Augustine Zhao Rong, a Chinese diocesan priest. Having first been one of the soldiers who had escorted Monsignor Dufresse from Chengdu to Beijing, he was moved by his patience and had then asked to be numbered among the neophytes. Once baptized, he was sent to the seminary and then ordained a priest. Arrested, he was tortured and died in 1815.

    Saint John da Triora, O.F.M., priest. Put in prison together with others in the summer of 1815, he was then condemned to death, and strangled on February 7, 1816.

    Saint Joseph Yuan, a Chinese diocesan priest. Having heard Monsignor Dufresse speak of the Christian faith, he was overcome by its beauty and then became an exemplary neophyte. Later, he was ordained a priest and, as such, was dedicated to evangelisation in various districts. He was arrested in August 1816, condemned to be strangled, and was killed in this way on June 24, 1817.

    Saint Paul Liu Hanzuo, a Chinese diocesan priest, killed in 1819.

    Saint Francis Regis Clet of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians). After obtaining permission to go to the missions in China, he embarked for the Orient in 1791. Having reached there, for 30 years he spent a life of missionary sacrifice. Upheld by an untiring zeal, he evangelized three immense Chinese provinces: Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan. Betrayed by a Christian, he was arrested and thrown into prison where he underwent atrocious tortures. Following sentence by the Jiaqing Emperor he was killed by strangling on February 17, 1820.

    Saint Thaddeus Liu, a Chinese diocesan priest. He refused to apostatize, saying that he was a priest and wanted to be faithful to the religion that he had preached. Condemned to death, he was strangled on November 30, 1823.

    Saint Peter Liu, a Chinese lay catechist. He was arrested in 1814 and condemned to exile in Tartary, where he remained for almost twenty years. Returning to his homeland he was again arrested, and was strangled on May 17, 1834.

    Saint Joachim Ho, a Chinese lay catechist. He was baptized at the age of about twenty years. In the great persecution of 1814 he had been taken with many others of the faithful and subjected to cruel torture. Sent into exile in Tartary, he remained there for almost twenty years. Returning to his homeland he was arrested again and refused to apostatize. Following that, and the death sentence having been confirmed by the Emperor, he was strangled on July 9, 1839.

    Saint John Gabriel Perboyre, C.M., entered the Vincentians as a high school student. The death of his younger brother, also a Vincentian priest, moved his superiors to allow him to take his brother's place, arriving in China in 1835. Despite poor health, he served the poverty-stricken residents of Hubei. Arrested during a revival of anti-Christian persecution, upon imperial edict, he was strangled to death in 1840.

    Augustus Chapdelaine, M.E.P., a priest of the Diocese of Coutances. He entered the Seminary of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and embarked for China in 1852. He arrived in Guangxi at the end of 1854. Arrested in 1856, he was tortured, condemned to death in prison, and died in February 1856.

    Saint Lawrence Bai Xiaoman, a Chinese layman, and an unassuming worker. He joined Blessed Chapdelaine in the refuge that was given to the missionary and was arrested with him and brought before the tribunal. Nothing could make him renounce his religious beliefs. He was beheaded on February 25, 1856.

    Saint Agnes Cao Guiying, a widow, born into an old Christian family. Being dedicated to the instruction of young girls who had recently been converted by Blessed Chapdelaine, she was arrested and condemned to death in prison. She was executed on March 1, 1856.

    Friday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 387

    Reading 1 Hos 14:2-10
    Thus says the LORD:
    Return, O Israel, to the LORD, your God;
    you have collapsed through your guilt.
    Take with you words,
    and return to the LORD;
    Say to him, “Forgive all iniquity,
    and receive what is good, that we may render
    as offerings the bullocks from our stalls.
    Assyria will not save us,
    nor shall we have horses to mount;
    We shall say no more, ‘Our god,’
    to the work of our hands;
    for in you the orphan finds compassion.”
    I will heal their defection, says the LORD,
    I will love them freely;
    for my wrath is turned away from them.
    I will be like the dew for Israel:
    he shall blossom like the lily;
    He shall strike root like the Lebanon cedar,
    and put forth his shoots.
    His splendor shall be like the olive tree
    and his fragrance like the Lebanon cedar.
    Again they shall dwell in his shade
    and raise grain;
    They shall blossom like the vine,
    and his fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

    Ephraim! What more has he to do with idols?
    I have humbled him, but I will prosper him.
    “I am like a verdant cypress tree”—
    because of me you bear fruit!

    Let him who is wise understand these things;
    let him who is prudent know them.
    Straight are the paths of the LORD,
    in them the just walk,
    but sinners stumble in them.

    Responsorial Psalm 51:3-4, 8-9, 12-13, 14 and 17
    R. (17b) My mouth will declare your praise.
    Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness;
    in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense.
    Thoroughly wash me from my guilt
    and of my sin cleanse me.
    R. My mouth will declare your praise.
    Behold, you are pleased with sincerity of heart,
    and in my inmost being you teach me wisdom.
    Cleanse me of sin with hyssop, that I may be purified;
    wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
    R. My mouth will declare your praise.
    A clean heart create for me, O God,
    and a steadfast spirit renew within me.
    Cast me not out from your presence,
    and your Holy Spirit take not from me.
    R. My mouth will declare your praise.
    Give me back the joy of your salvation,
    and a willing spirit sustain in me.
    O Lord, open my lips,
    and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.
    R. My mouth will declare your praise.

    Alleluia Jn 16:13a; 14:26d
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    When the Spirit of truth comes,
    he will guide you to all truth
    and remind you of all I told you.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 10:16-23
    Jesus said to his Apostles:
    “Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves;
    so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.
    But beware of men,
    for they will hand you over to courts
    and scourge you in their synagogues,
    and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake
    as a witness before them and the pagans.
    When they hand you over,
    do not worry about how you are to speak
    or what you are to say.
    You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
    For it will not be you who speak
    but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
    Brother will hand over brother to death,
    and the father his child;
    children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
    You will be hated by all because of my name,
    but whoever endures to the end will be saved.
    When they persecute you in one town, flee to another.
    Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel
    before the Son of Man comes.”

    Saint Ulric, Bishop, born 890, died 973
    Born in Augsburg, Ulric was educated at Saint Gall Abbey in Switzerland. A Benedictine sister, Wiborada, (Saint Wiborada) had prophesied that Ulric would one day become bishop even though it seemed unlikely because of the illnesses that Ulric had as a youth. Ulric was made chamberlain to the Bishop of Augsburg, who later ordained him. The young priest was wise in the ways of God and carried out his duties with utmost reverence. He was zealous in prayer, diligent in study, and generous toward the poor. He carefully guarded his chastity, saying, “Take away the fuel, and you take away the fire.” Ulric became bishop in Augsburg in 923. Since the Magyars (from Hungary) had recently plundered the city, the Cathedral was destroyed and many were killed, including Saint Wiborada. After the attack, Bishop Ulric firstly wanted to encourage his people. A temporary church was constructed where the people could be instructed and comforted. He rose every morning at 3 AM to pray the Matins and Lauds. At noon he would go to the hospital to pray with the sick and wash the feet of twelve poor people and give them alms. He worked long hours and prayed unceasingly. Bishop Ulric led his people to rebuild the cathedral. He made a complete visitation of all the churches of his diocese annually and held synods of the clergy every two years.
    In 955, the Magyars once again came to attack Augsburg, but they were stopped and repelled. The people attributed this victory to the prayers of Bishop Ulric. In his retirement, Bishop Ulric went to live in the Abbey of Saint Gall. During his last illness, Ulric laid on ashes that were strewn on the floor in the shape of a cross. After his death, miracles occurred at his tomb. Pregnant women who drank from his chalice were said to have easy deliveries. He is a patron saint of easy deliveries. Ulric was canonized by Pope John XV in 993 at the Lateran Council, the first recorded canonization by a Pope.

    Memorial of Saint Benedict, Abbot
    Lectionary: 388

    Reading 1 Is 6:1-8
    In the year King Uzziah died,
    I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne,
    with the train of his garment filling the temple.
    Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings:
    with two they veiled their faces,
    with two they veiled their feet,
    and with two they hovered aloft.

    They cried one to the other,
    “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!
    All the earth is filled with his glory!”
    At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook
    and the house was filled with smoke.

    Then I said, “Woe is me, I am doomed!
    For I am a man of unclean lips,
    living among a people of unclean lips;
    yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!”
    Then one of the seraphim flew to me,
    holding an ember that he had taken with tongs from the altar.

    He touched my mouth with it and said,
    “See, now that this has touched your lips,
    your wickedness is removed, your sin purged.”

    Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,
    “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?”
    “Here I am,” I said; “send me!”

    Responsorial Psalm 93:1ab, 1cd-2, 5
    R. (1a) The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.
    The LORD is king, in splendor robed;
    robed is the LORD and girt about with strength.
    R. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.
    And he has made the world firm,
    not to be moved.
    Your throne stands firm from of old;
    from everlasting you are, O LORD.
    R. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.
    Your decrees are worthy of trust indeed:
    holiness befits your house,
    O LORD, for length of days.
    R. The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

    Alleluia 1 Pt 4:14
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you,
    for the Spirit of God rests upon you.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 10:24-33
    Jesus said to his Apostles:
    “No disciple is above his teacher,
    no slave above his master.
    It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher,
    for the slave that he become like his master.
    If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul,
    how much more those of his household!

    “Therefore do not be afraid of them.
    Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed,
    nor secret that will not be known.
    What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light;
    what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.
    And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul;
    rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy
    both soul and body in Gehenna.
    Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin?
    Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge.
    Even all the hairs of your head are counted.
    So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
    Everyone who acknowledges me before others
    I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.
    But whoever denies me before others,
    I will deny before my heavenly Father.”

    Feast day of Saint Benedict, patron of Europe and those suffering from being poisoned, died 547
    He was the son of a Roman noble of Norcia and the twin to his sister, Scholastica. As a young man Benedict was sent to Rome to finish his education but was soon disappointed by the dissolute life he found there. He left Rome to find some place away from the life of the great city. He took his old teacher/helper with him and went to Affile, is in the Simbruini mountains, about forty miles from Rome and two from Subiaco.
    There, Benedict met a monk, Romanus of Subiaco, whose monastery was on the mountain above the cliff overhanging the cave. Romanus had discussed with Benedict the purpose which had brought him to Subiaco, and had given him the monk's habit. By his advice Benedict became a hermit and for three years, unknown to men, lived in this cave above the lake.
    During these three years of solitude, broken only by occasional communications with the outer world and by the visits of Romanus, Benedict matured both in mind and character, in knowledge of himself and of his fellow-man, and at the same time he became not merely known to, but secured the respect of, those about him; so much so that on the death of the abbot of a monastery in the neighborhood, the community came to him and begged him to become its abbot. Benedict was acquainted with the life and discipline of the monastery, and knew that "their manners were diverse from his and therefore that they would never agree together: yet, at length, overcome with their entreaty, he gave his consent." The experiment failed; the monks tried to poison him. The legend goes that they first tried to poison his drink. He prayed a blessing over the cup and the cup shattered. Thus he left the group and went back to his cave at Subiaco. There lived in the neighborhood a priest called Florentius who, moved by envy, tried to ruin him. He tried to poison him with poisoned bread. When he prayed a blessing over the bread, a raven swept in and took the loaf away. From this time his miracles seem to have become frequent, and many people, attracted by his sanctity and character, came to Subiaco to be under his guidance. Having failed by sending him poisonous bread, Florentius tried to seduce his monks with some prostitutes. To avoid further temptations, in about 530 Benedict left Subiaco. He founded 12 monasteries in the vicinity of Subiaco, and, eventually, in 530 he founded the great Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino, which lies on a hilltop between Rome and Naples.
    The Order of Saint Benedict is of later origin and, moreover, not an "order" as commonly understood but merely a confederation of autonomous congregations. Benedict's main achievement, his "Rule of Saint Benedict", contains a set of rules for his monks to follow. Heavily influenced by the writings of John Cassian, it shows strong affinity with the Rule of the Master, but it also has a unique spirit of balance, moderation and reasonableness, which persuaded most Christian religious communities founded throughout the Middle Ages to adopt it. As a result, his Rule became one of the most influential religious rules in Western Christendom.
    The Rule of Saint Benedict is made of seventy-three short chapters. Its wisdom is twofold: spiritual (how to live a Christocentric life on earth) and administrative (how to run a monastery efficiently). More than half of the chapters describe how to be obedient and humble, and what to do when a member of the community is not. About one-fourth regulate the work of God (the "opus Dei"). One-tenth outline how, and by whom, the monastery should be managed. The rule of Ora et Labora - pray and work, the monks each day devoted eight hours to prayer, eight hours to sleep, and eight hours to manual work, sacred reading and/or works of charity.
    Benedict died March 21, 547 He is a patron saint of Europe.

    The meaning of the letters on the Saint Benedict medal
    On one side, the medal has an image of Saint Benedict, holding the Holy Rule in his left hand and a cross in his right. There is a raven on one side of him, with a cup on the other side of him. Around the medal's outer margin are the words "Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur" ("May we be strengthened by his presence in the hour of our death"). The other side of the medal has a cross with the initials CSSML on the vertical bar which signify "Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux" ("May the Holy Cross be my light") and on the horizontal bar are the initials NDSMD which stand for "Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux" ("Let not the dragon be my guide"). The initials CSPB stand for "Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti" ("The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict") and are located on the interior angles of the cross. Either the inscription "PAX" (Peace) or the Christogram "IHS" may be found at the top of the cross in most cases. Around the medal's margin on this side are the Vade Retro Satana initials VRSNSMV which stand for "Vade Retro Satana, Nonquam Suade Mihi Vana" ("Begone Satan, do not suggest to me thy vanities") then a space followed by the initials SMQLIVB which signify "Sunt Mala Quae Libas, Ipse Venena Bibas" ("Evil are the things thou profferest, drink thou thy own poison").

    Saint Benedict, please pray for us.

    Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 103

    Reading 1 Is 55:10-11
    Thus says the LORD:
    Just as from the heavens
    the rain and snow come down
    and do not return there
    till they have watered the earth,
    making it fertile and fruitful,
    giving seed to the one who sows
    and bread to the one who eats,
    so shall my word be
    that goes forth from my mouth;
    my word shall not return to me void,
    but shall do my will,
    achieving the end for which I sent it.

    Responsorial Psalm Ps 65:10, 11, 12-13, 14
    R. (Lk 8:8) The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.
    You have visited the land and watered it;
    greatly have you enriched it.
    God’s watercourses are filled;
    you have prepared the grain.
    R. The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.
    Thus have you prepared the land: drenching its furrows,
    breaking up its clods,
    Softening it with showers,
    blessing its yield.
    R. The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.
    You have crowned the year with your bounty,
    and your paths overflow with a rich harvest;
    The untilled meadows overflow with it,
    and rejoicing clothes the hills.
    R. The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.
    The fields are garmented with flocks
    and the valleys blanketed with grain.
    They shout and sing for joy.
    R. The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.

    Reading 2 Rom 8:18-23
    Brothers and sisters:
    I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing
    compared with the glory to be revealed for us.
    For creation awaits with eager expectation
    the revelation of the children of God;
    for creation was made subject to futility,
    not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it,
    in hope that creation itself
    would be set free from slavery to corruption
    and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.
    We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now;
    and not only that, but we ourselves,
    who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,
    we also groan within ourselves
    as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

    Alleluia
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower.
    All who come to him will have life forever.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Gospel Mt 13:1-23 or 13:1-9
    On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea.
    Such large crowds gathered around him
    that he got into a boat and sat down,
    and the whole crowd stood along the shore.
    And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying:
    “A sower went out to sow.
    And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path,
    and birds came and ate it up.
    Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil.
    It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep,
    and when the sun rose it was scorched,
    and it withered for lack of roots.
    Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it.
    But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit,
    a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.
    Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

    The disciples approached him and said,
    “Why do you speak to them in parables?”
    He said to them in reply,
    “Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven
    has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted.
    To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich;
    from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
    This is why I speak to them in parables, because
    they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.
    Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says:
    You shall indeed hear but not understand,
    you shall indeed look but never see.
    Gross is the heart of this people,
    they will hardly hear with their ears,
    they have closed their eyes,
    lest they see with their eyes
    and hear with their ears
    and understand with their hearts and be converted,
    and I heal them.

    “But blessed are your eyes, because they see,
    and your ears, because they hear.
    Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people
    longed to see what you see but did not see it,
    and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

    “Hear then the parable of the sower.
    The seed sown on the path is the one
    who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it,
    and the evil one comes and steals away
    what was sown in his heart.
    The seed sown on rocky ground
    is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.
    But he has no root and lasts only for a time.
    When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word,
    he immediately falls away.
    The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word,
    but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word
    and it bears no fruit.
    But the seed sown on rich soil
    is the one who hears the word and understands it,
    who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

    Monday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 389

    Reading 1 Is 1:10-17
    Hear the word of the LORD,
    princes of Sodom!
    Listen to the instruction of our God,
    people of Gomorrah!
    What care I for the number of your sacrifices?
    says the LORD.
    I have had enough of whole-burnt rams
    and fat of fatlings;
    In the blood of calves, lambs and goats
    I find no pleasure.

    When you come in to visit me,
    who asks these things of you?
    Trample my courts no more!
    Bring no more worthless offerings;
    your incense is loathsome to me.
    New moon and sabbath, calling of assemblies,
    octaves with wickedness: these I cannot bear.
    Your new moons and festivals I detest;
    they weigh me down, I tire of the load.
    When you spread out your hands,
    I close my eyes to you;
    Though you pray the more,
    I will not listen.
    Your hands are full of blood!
    Wash yourselves clean!
    Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes;
    cease doing evil; learn to do good.
    Make justice your aim: redress the wronged,
    hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow.

    Responsorial Psalm 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21 and 23
    R. (23b) To the upright I will show the saving power of God.
    “Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you,
    for your burnt offerings are before me always.
    I take from your house no bullock,
    no goats out of your fold.”
    R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God.

    “Why do you recite my statutes,
    and profess my covenant with your mouth,
    Though you hate discipline
    and cast my words behind you?”
    R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God.
    “When you do these things, shall I be deaf to it?
    Or do you think you that I am like yourself?
    I will correct you by drawing them up before your eyes.
    He that offers praise as a sacrifice glorifies me;
    and to him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God.”
    R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God.

    Alleluia Mt 5:10
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
    for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 10:34-11:1
    Jesus said to his Apostles:
    “Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth.
    I have come to bring not peace but the sword.
    For I have come to set
    a man against his father,
    a daughter against her mother,
    and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
    and one’s enemies will be those of his household.

    “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me,
    and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
    and whoever does not take up his cross
    and follow after me is not worthy of me.
    Whoever finds his life will lose it,
    and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

    “Whoever receives you receives me,
    and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.
    Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet
    will receive a prophet’s reward,
    and whoever receives a righteous man
    because he is righteous
    will receive a righteous man’s reward.
    And whoever gives only a cup of cold water
    to one of these little ones to drink
    because he is a disciple–
    amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”

    When Jesus finished giving these commands to his Twelve disciples,
    he went away from that place to teach and to preach in their towns.

    The anniversary of the third apparition of Fatima where the Fatima secret was given, July 13, 1917. The secret written down in 1944.
    This is the secret of Fatima as written by Sister Lucia:
    Well, the secret is made up of three distinct parts, two of which I am now going to reveal. The first part is the vision of hell.
    Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke, now falling back on every side like sparks in a huge fire, without weight or equilibrium, and amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us and made us tremble with fear. The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying and repulsive likeness to frightful and unknown animals, all black and transparent. This vision lasted but an instant. How can we ever be grateful enough to our kind heavenly Mother, who had already prepared us by promising, in the first Apparition, to take us to heaven. Otherwise, I think we would have died of fear and terror.
    We then looked up at Our Lady, who said to us so kindly and so sadly:
    “You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end: but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the Pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that He is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father. To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she shall be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world,”

    Towards 16:00 hours on January 3rd, 1944, in the convent’s chapel, before the Tabernacle, Lucia asked Jesus to let her know His will: ‘I then feel that a friendly hand, affectionate and maternal, touches my shoulder.’ It is ‘the Mother of Heaven’ who said to her: ‘be at peace and write what they command you to, but not that which you were given to understand about its meaning,’ intending to allude to the meaning of the vision that the Virgin herself had revealed to her.

    Right after – says Sr. Lucia – ‘I felt my spirit flooded by a light-filled mystery which is God and in Him I saw and heard: the point of the flame-like lance which detaches, touches the axis of the earth and it [the earth] shakes: mountains, cities, towns and villages with their inhabitants are buried. The sea, rivers and clouds leave their bounds, they overflow, flood and drag with them into a whirlpool, houses and people in a number unable to be counted; it is the purification of the world from the sin it is immersed in. Hatred, ambition, cause destructive wars. Afterward I felt in the increased beating of my heart and in my spirit a quiet voice which said: ‘in time, one faith, one baptism, one Church, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic. Heaven in eternity!’ This word, ‘Heaven,’ filled my heart with peace and happiness, so much so that, almost without realizing it, I continued to repeat for some time: Heaven, Heaven!’

    Then Sister Lucia was given the strength to write the Third Secret.
    I write in obedience to you, my God, who command me to do so through his Excellency the Bishop of Leiria and through your Most Holy Mother and mine.
    After the two parts which I have already explained, at the left of Our Lady and a little above, we saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire; but they died out in contact with the splendor that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand: pointing to the earth with his right hand, the Angel cried out in a loud voice: ‘Penance, Penance, Penance!'. And we saw in an immense light that is God: ‘something similar to how people appear in a mirror when they pass in front of it' a Bishop dressed in White ‘we had the impression that it was the Holy Father'. Other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious going up a steep mountain, at the top of which there was a big Cross of rough-hewn trunks as of a cork-tree with the bark; before reaching there the Holy Father passed through a big city half in ruins and half trembling with halting step, afflicted with pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the corpses he met on his way; having reached the top of the mountain, on his knees at the foot of the big Cross he was killed by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died one after another the other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious, and various lay people of different ranks and positions. Beneath the two arms of the Cross there were two Angels each with a crystal aspersorium in his hand, in which they gathered up the blood of the Martyrs and with it sprinkled the souls that were making their way to God.

  9. July 13th is also known as the day of Rosa Mystica (Mystical Rose) one of the titles of the Virgin Mary in the Litany of Loreto. The Virgin Mary appeared July 13, 1947 and spoke at length to Pierina Gilli in Italy. Mary was clothed in white with three roses of different colors on her dress. A white rose representing prayer, a red rose meaning sacrifice and a gold rose symbolizing the treasure of penance emblazoned her. The Virgin asked Pierina to make known that she wanted July 13th to be celebrated in honor of Rosa Mystica, a devotion to be especially dear to all religious, male and female and to priests of the world. She said, “On this day I shall pour out vocational holiness and abundant graces on those religious orders and priests who honor me as the Rosa Mystica.” It seems more than coincidence that this revelation was thirty years to the day of the famous Fatima apparition when the children were given the prophecy that the Church and clergy would have much to suffer if people didn’t return to God.

    Memorial of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Virgin
    Lectionary: 390

    Reading 1 Is 7:1-9
    In the days of Ahaz, king of Judah, son of Jotham, son of Uzziah,
    Rezin, king of Aram,
    and Pekah, king of Israel, son of Remaliah,
    went up to attack Jerusalem,
    but they were not able to conquer it.
    When word came to the house of David that Aram
    was encamped in Ephraim,
    the heart of the king and the heart of the people trembled,
    as the trees of the forest tremble in the wind.

    Then the LORD said to Isaiah: Go out to meet Ahaz,
    you and your son Shear-jashub,
    at the end of the conduit of the upper pool,
    on the highway of the fuller’s field, and say to him:
    Take care you remain tranquil and do not fear;
    let not your courage fail
    before these two stumps of smoldering brands
    the blazing anger of Rezin and the Arameans,
    and of the son Remaliah,
    because of the mischief that
    Aram, Ephraim and the son of Remaliah,
    plots against you, saying,
    “Let us go up and tear Judah asunder, make it our own by force,
    and appoint the son of Tabeel king there.”

    Thus says the LORD:
    This shall not stand, it shall not be!
    Damascus is the capital of Aram,
    and Rezin is the head of Damascus;
    Samaria is the capital of Ephraim,
    and Remaliah’s son the head of Samaria.

    But within sixty years and five,
    Ephraim shall be crushed, no longer a nation.
    Unless your faith is firm
    you shall not be firm!

    Responsorial Psalm 48:2-3a, 3b-4, 5-6, 7-8
    R. (see 9d) God upholds his city for ever.
    Great is the LORD and wholly to be praised
    in the city of our God.
    His holy mountain, fairest of heights,
    is the joy of all the earth.
    R. God upholds his city for ever.
    Mount Zion, “the recesses of the North,”
    is the city of the great King.
    God is with her castles;
    renowned is he as a stronghold.
    R. God upholds his city for ever.
    For lo! the kings assemble,
    they come on together;
    They also see, and at once are stunned,
    terrified, routed.
    R. God upholds his city for ever.
    Quaking seizes them there;
    anguish, like a woman’s in labor,
    As though a wind from the east
    were shattering ships of Tarshish.
    R. God upholds his city for ever.

    Alleluia Ps 95:8
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    If today you hear his voice,
    harden not your hearts.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 11:20-24
    Jesus began to reproach the towns
    where most of his mighty deeds had been done,
    since they had not repented.
    “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!
    For if the mighty deeds done in your midst
    had been done in Tyre and Sidon,
    they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes.
    But I tell you, it will be more tolerable
    for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
    And as for you, Capernaum:

    Will you be exalted to heaven?
    You will go down to the nether world.

    For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom,
    it would have remained until this day.
    But I tell you, it will be more tolerable
    for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

    Feast day of Saint Kateri Tekawitha died 1680
    Kateri Tekakwitha, given the name Tekakwitha, baptized as Catherine and informally known as Lily of the Mohawks, is a Catholic saint who was an Algonquin–Mohawk laywoman. Born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, on the south side of the Mohawk River in present-day New York State, she contracted smallpox in an epidemic; her family died and her face was scarred. She converted to Catholicism at age nineteen, when she was renamed Kateri, and baptized in honor of Catherine of Siena. Refusing to marry, she left her village and moved for the remaining five years of her life to the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, south of Montreal on the St. Lawrence River in New France, now Canada. Tekakwitha took a vow of perpetual virginity. Upon her death at the age of 24, witnesses said that minutes later her scars vanished and her face appeared radiant and beautiful.

    Memorial of Saint Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
    Lectionary: 391

    Reading 1 Is 10:5-7, 13b-16
    Thus says the LORD:
    Woe to Assyria! My rod in anger,
    my staff in wrath.
    Against an impious nation I send him,
    and against a people under my wrath I order him
    To seize plunder, carry off loot,
    and tread them down like the mud of the streets.
    But this is not what he intends,
    nor does he have this in mind;
    Rather, it is in his heart to destroy,
    to make an end of nations not a few.

    For he says:
    “By my own power I have done it,
    and by my wisdom, for I am shrewd.
    I have moved the boundaries of peoples,
    their treasures I have pillaged,
    and, like a giant, I have put down the enthroned.
    My hand has seized like a nest
    the riches of nations;
    As one takes eggs left alone,
    so I took in all the earth;
    No one fluttered a wing,
    or opened a mouth, or chirped!”

    Will the axe boast against him who hews with it?
    Will the saw exalt itself above him who wields it?
    As if a rod could sway him who lifts it,
    or a staff him who is not wood!
    Therefore the Lord, the LORD of hosts,
    will send among his fat ones leanness,
    And instead of his glory there will be kindling
    like the kindling of fire.

    Responsorial Psalm 94:5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 14-15
    R. (14a) The Lord will not abandon his people.
    Your people, O LORD, they trample down,
    your inheritance they afflict.
    Widow and stranger they slay,
    the fatherless they murder.
    R. The Lord will not abandon his people.
    And they say, “The LORD sees not;
    the God of Jacob perceives not.”
    Understand, you senseless ones among the people;
    and, you fools, when will you be wise?
    R. The Lord will not abandon his people.
    Shall he who shaped the ear not hear?
    or he who formed the eye not see?
    Shall he who instructs nations not chastise,
    he who teaches men knowledge?
    R. The Lord will not abandon his people.
    For the LORD will not cast off his people,
    nor abandon his inheritance;
    But judgment shall again be with justice,
    and all the upright of heart shall follow it.
    R. The Lord will not abandon his people.

    Alleluia Mt 11:25
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
    you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 11:25-27
    At that time Jesus exclaimed:
    “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
    for although you have hidden these things
    from the wise and the learned
    you have revealed them to the childlike.
    Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
    All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
    No one knows the Son except the Father,
    and no one knows the Father except the Son
    and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”
    St. Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor of the Church (Feast day-July 15)
    from Catholic.org:

    St. Bonaventure, known as "the seraphic doctor," was born at Bagnoregio, in the Lazio region of central Italy, in 1221. He received the name of Bonaventure in consequence of an exclamation of St. Francis of Assisi, when, in response to the pleading of the child's mother, the saint prayed for John's recovery from a dangerous illness, and, foreseeing the future greatness of the little John, cried out "O Buona ventura"-O good fortune!

    At the age of twenty-two St. Bonaventure entered the Franciscan Order. Having made his vows, he was sent to Paris to complete his studies under the celebrated doctor Alexander of Hales, an Englishman and a Franciscan. After the latter's death he continued his course under his successor, John of Rochelle. In Paris he became the good friend of the great St. Thomas Aquinas. He received the degree of Doctor, together with St. Thomas Aquinas, ceding to his friend against the latter's inclination, the honor of having it first conferred upon him. Like St. Thomas Aquinas, he enjoyed the friendship of the holy King, St. Louis.

    At the age of thirty-five he was chosen General of his Order and restored a perfect calm where peace had been disturbed by internal dissensions. He did much for his Order and composed The Life of St. Francis . He also assisted at the translation of the relics of St. Anthony of Padua. He was nominated Archbishop of York by Pope Clement IV, but he begged not to be forced to accept that dignity. Gregory X obliged him to take upon himself a greater one, that of Cardinal and Bishop of Albano, one of the six suffragan Sees of Rome. Before his death he abdicated his office of General of the Franciscan Order. He died while he was assisting at the Second Council of Lyons, on July 15, 1274.

    Thursday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 392

    Reading 1 Is 26:7-9, 12, 16-19
    The way of the just is smooth;
    the path of the just you make level.
    Yes, for your way and your judgments, O LORD,
    we look to you;
    Your name and your title
    are the desire of our souls.
    My soul yearns for you in the night,
    yes, my spirit within me keeps vigil for you;
    When your judgment dawns upon the earth,
    the world’s inhabitants learn justice.
    O LORD, you mete out peace to us,
    for it is you who have accomplished all we have done.

    O LORD, oppressed by your punishment,
    we cried out in anguish under your chastising.
    As a woman about to give birth
    writhes and cries out in her pains,
    so were we in your presence, O LORD.
    We conceived and writhed in pain,
    giving birth to wind;
    Salvation we have not achieved for the earth,
    the inhabitants of the world cannot bring it forth.
    But your dead shall live, their corpses shall rise;
    awake and sing, you who lie in the dust.
    For your dew is a dew of light,
    and the land of shades gives birth.

    Responsorial Psalm 102:13-14ab and 15, 16-18, 19-21
    R. (20b) From heaven the Lord looks down on the earth.
    You, O LORD, abide forever,
    and your name through all generations.
    You will arise and have mercy on Zion,
    for it is time to pity her.
    For her stones are dear to your servants,
    and her dust moves them to pity.
    R. From heaven the Lord looks down on the earth.
    The nations shall revere your name, O LORD,
    and all the kings of the earth your glory,
    When the LORD has rebuilt Zion
    and appeared in his glory;
    When he has regarded the prayer of the destitute,
    and not despised their prayer.
    R. From heaven the Lord looks down on the earth.
    Let this be written for the generation to come,
    and let his future creatures praise the LORD:
    “The LORD looked down from his holy height,
    from heaven he beheld the earth,
    To hear the groaning of the prisoners,
    to release those doomed to die.”
    R. From heaven the Lord looks down on the earth.

    Alleluia Mt 11:28
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
    and I will give you rest, says the Lord.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 11:28-30
    Jesus said:
    “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
    and I will give you rest.
    Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
    for I am meek and humble of heart;
    and you will find rest for yourselves.
    For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

    Feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
    https://www.americaneedsfatima.org/...-of-devotion-to-our-lady-of-mount-carmel.html
    The above link is very good, but if you are pressed for time, an excerpt is given:
    The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was instituted by the Carmelites between 1376 and 1386 under the title "Commemoratio B. Marif Virg. duplex" to celebrate the victory of their order over its enemies on obtaining the approbation of its name and constitution from Honorius III on 30 Jan., 1226 (see Colvenerius, "Kal. Mar.", 30 Jan. "Summa Aurea", III, 737). The feast was assigned to 16 July, because on that date in 1251, according to Carmelite traditions, the scapular was given by the Blessed Virgin to St. Simon Stock; it was first approved by Sixtus V in 1587.

    Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Lourdes and Fatima

    As if in a gesture of approval and blessing, the Queen of Heaven and Earth chose to make her last apparition at Lourdes on July 16th 1858, the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Likewise, one cannot fail to recall Sister Lucia’s account while describing the vision of October 13, 1917 at Fatima: "…it seemed to me I saw Our Lady in a form similar to Our Lady of Mount Carmel."

    Thus through the centuries Our Lady of Mount Carmel kept a constant watch over her children, ever solicitous to intercede for them and lead them to Her Divine Son. Amidst the sea of chaos, confusion and impiety raging in the world today, may Our Lady of Mount Carmel grant us strength and fortitude so we may all remain faithful to Her Son and His Holy Church.

    Our Lady of Mount Carmel, please help us and intercede for us to your Son.

    Friday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 393

    Reading 1 Is 38:1-6, 21-22, 7-8
    When Hezekiah was mortally ill,
    the prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz, came and said to him:
    “Thus says the LORD: Put your house in order,
    for you are about to die; you shall not recover.”
    Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD:

    “O LORD, remember how faithfully and wholeheartedly
    I conducted myself in your presence,
    doing what was pleasing to you!”
    And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

    Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah: “Go, tell Hezekiah:
    Thus says the LORD, the God of your father David:
    I have heard your prayer and seen your tears.
    I will heal you: in three days you shall go up to the LORD’s temple;
    I will add fifteen years to your life.
    I will rescue you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria;
    I will be a shield to this city.”

    Isaiah then ordered a poultice of figs to be taken
    and applied to the boil, that he might recover.
    Then Hezekiah asked,
    “What is the sign that I shall go up to the temple of the LORD?”

    Isaiah answered:
    “This will be the sign for you from the LORD
    that he will do what he has promised:
    See, I will make the shadow cast by the sun
    on the stairway to the terrace of Ahaz
    go back the ten steps it has advanced.”
    So the sun came back the ten steps it had advanced.

    Responsorial Psalm Isaiah 38:10, 11, 12abcd, 16
    R. (see 17b) You saved my life, O Lord; I shall not die.
    Once I said,
    “In the noontime of life I must depart!
    To the gates of the nether world I shall be consigned
    for the rest of my years.”
    R. You saved my life, O Lord; I shall not die.
    I said, “I shall see the LORD no more
    in the land of the living.
    No longer shall I behold my fellow men
    among those who dwell in the world.”
    R. You saved my life, O Lord; I shall not die.
    My dwelling, like a shepherd’s tent,
    is struck down and borne away from me;
    You have folded up my life, like a weaver
    who severs the last thread.
    R. You saved my life, O Lord; I shall not die.
    Those live whom the LORD protects;
    yours is the life of my spirit.
    You have given me health and life.
    R. You saved my life, O Lord; I shall not die.

    Alleluia Jn 10:27
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord;
    I know them, and they follow me.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 12:1-8
    Jesus was going through a field of grain on the sabbath.
    His disciples were hungry
    and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them.
    When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him,
    “See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath.”
    He said to the them, “Have you not read what David did
    when he and his companions were hungry,
    how he went into the house of God and ate the bread of offering,
    which neither he nor his companions
    but only the priests could lawfully eat?
    Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath
    the priests serving in the temple violate the sabbath
    and are innocent?
    I say to you, something greater than the temple is here.
    If you knew what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice,
    you would not have condemned these innocent men.
    For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath.”

    Feast day of Saint Alexis the Beggar, died 417
    St. Alexis is mentioned in the Roman Martyrology under July 17 in the following terms: "At Rome, in a church on the Aventine Hill, a man of God is celebrated under the name of Alexis, who, as reported by tradition, abandoned his wealthy home, for the sake of becoming poor and to beg for alms unrecognized."
    Alexis was born the son of a wealthy senator in Rome. As a child and throughout his life, he was well known for his charity, having learned that riches which are given away to the poor remain with us forever known to God. Wishing to give up all honor and prestige, for the sake of Our Lord, Alexis left home and went to Syria. He prayed for hours in church, and worked as a servant in hospitals, while living in a shack adjoining the church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Edessa. One day a statue of Mary spoke revealing to the people of Edessa that Alexis was a ‘Man of God.’ A while later, Alexis fled back to Rome to live there as a beggar. He lived in Rome for seventeen years and died unrecognized in his father’s mansion where he had worked as a servant and slept under the stairs. After his death, his parents discovered his identity through a manuscript Alexis left. It was noted that all the bells in Rome rang miraculously at the moment of his death. A religious order was founded in the fifteenth century named after Alexis, called the Alexian Brothers. They devote themselves to taking care of the elderly, and those suffering from nervous disorders.

    Saturday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 394

    Reading 1 Mi 2:1-5
    Woe to those who plan iniquity,
    and work out evil on their couches;
    In the morning light they accomplish it
    when it lies within their power.
    They covet fields, and seize them;
    houses, and they take them;
    They cheat an owner of his house,
    a man of his inheritance.
    Therefore thus says the LORD:
    Behold, I am planning against this race an evil
    from which you shall not withdraw your necks;
    Nor shall you walk with head high,
    for it will be a time of evil.

    On that day a satire shall be sung over you,
    and there shall be a plaintive chant:
    “Our ruin is complete,
    our fields are portioned out among our captors,
    The fields of my people are measured out,
    and no one can get them back!”
    Thus you shall have no one
    to mark out boundaries by lot
    in the assembly of the LORD.

    Responsorial Psalm 10:1-2, 3-4, 7-8, 14
    R. (12b) Do not forget the poor, O Lord!
    Why, O LORD, do you stand aloof?
    Why hide in times of distress?
    Proudly the wicked harass the afflicted,
    who are caught in the devices the wicked have contrived.
    R. Do not forget the poor, O Lord!
    For the wicked man glories in his greed,
    and the covetous blasphemes, sets the LORD at nought.
    The wicked man boasts, “He will not avenge it”;
    “There is no God,” sums up his thoughts.
    R. Do not forget the poor, O Lord!
    His mouth is full of cursing, guile and deceit;
    under his tongue are mischief and iniquity.
    He lurks in ambush near the villages;
    in hiding he murders the innocent;
    his eyes spy upon the unfortunate.
    R. Do not forget the poor, O Lord!
    You do see, for you behold misery and sorrow,
    taking them in your hands.
    On you the unfortunate man depends;
    of the fatherless you are the helper.
    R. Do not forget the poor, O Lord!

    Alleluia 2 Cor 5:19
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ,
    and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 12:14-21
    The Pharisees went out and took counsel against Jesus
    to put him to death.

    When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place.
    Many people followed him, and he cured them all,
    but he warned them not to make him known.
    This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet:

    Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,
    my beloved in whom I delight;
    I shall place my Spirit upon him,
    and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
    He will not contend or cry out,
    nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.
    A bruised reed he will not break,
    a smoldering wick he will not quench,
    until he brings justice to victory.

    And in his name the Gentiles will hope.

    Feast day of Saint Camillus de Lellis, priest, patron of doctors, died 1614
    from Catholic.org
    St. Camillus de Lellis was born at Bocchianico, Italy. He fought for the Venetians against the Turks, was addicted to gambling, and by 1574 was penniless in Naples. He became a Capuchin novice, but was unable to be professed because of a diseased leg he contracted while fighting the Turks. He devoted himself to caring for the sick, and became director of St. Giacomo Hospital in Rome. He received permission from his confessor (St. Philip Neri) to be ordained and decided, with two companions, to found his own congregation, the Ministers of the Sick (the Camellians), dedicated to the care of the sick. They ministered to the sick of Holy Ghost Hospital in Rome, enlarged their facilities in 1585, founded a new house in Naples in 1588, and attended the plague-stricken aboard ships in Rome's harbor and in Rome. In 1591, the Congregation was made into an order to serve the sick by Pope Gregory XIV, and in 1591 and 1605, Camillus sent members of his order to minister to wounded troops in Hungary and Croatia, the first field medical unit. Gravely ill for many years, he resigned as superior of the Order in 1607 and died in Rome on July 14, the year after he attended a General Chapter there. He was canonized in 1746, was declared patron of the sick, with St. John of God, by Pope Leo XIII, and patron of nurses and nursing groups by Pope Pius XI.

    Mass Readings for July 19 2020, Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A
    1st Reading – Wisdom 12:13, 16-19
    13 There is no god besides you who have the care of all, that you need show you have not unjustly condemned.

    16 For your might is the source of justice; your mastery over all things makes you lenient to all.

    17 For you show your might when the perfection of your power is disbelieved; and in those who know you, you rebuke temerity.

    18 But though you are master of might, you judge with clemency, and with much lenience you govern us; for power, whenever you will, attends you.

    19 And you taught your people, by these deeds, that those who are just must be kind; and you gave your children good ground for hope that you would permit repentance for their sins.

    Responsorial Psalm – Psalms 86:5-6, 9-10, 15-16
    R. (5a) Lord, you are good and forgiving.

    5 You, O LORD, are good and forgiving,
    abounding in kindness to all who call upon you.
    6 Hearken, O LORD, to my prayer
    and attend to the sound of my pleading.
    R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

    9 All the nations you have made shall come
    and worship you, O LORD,
    and glorify your name.
    10 For you are great, and you do wondrous deeds;
    you alone are God.
    R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

    15 You, O LORD, are a God merciful and gracious,
    slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity.
    16 Turn toward me, and have pity on me;
    give your strength to your servant.
    R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

    2nd Reading – Romans 8:26-27
    26 Brothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.

    27 And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will.

    Alleluia – CF. Matthew 11:25
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    25 Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;
    you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel – Matthew 13:24-43
    24 Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds, saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field.

    25 While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off.

    26 When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well.

    27 The slaves of the householder came to him and said, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?’

    28 He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ His slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

    29 He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them.

    30 Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn.”‘”

    31 He proposed another parable to them. “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field.

    32 It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.'”

    33 He spoke to them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.”

    34 All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables,

    35 to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation
    of the world.

    36 Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house. His disciples approached him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”

    37 He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man,

    38 the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one,

    39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.

    40 Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age.

    41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers.

    42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.

    43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

    Feast day of Saint Arsenius, Monk, died 449
    bio from wikipedia:
    He was born in 350 AD, in Rome to a Christian, Roman senatorial family. After his parents died, his sister joined a community of virgins, and he gave all their riches to the poor, and lived an ascetic life. Arsenius became famous for his righteousness and wisdom.

    Arsenius is said to have been made a deacon by Pope Damasus I who recommended him to Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I the Great, who had requested the Emperor Gratian and Pope Damasus around 383 to find him a tutor for his sons. Arsenius was chosen on the basis of being a man well read in Greek literature. He reached Constantinople in 383, and continued as tutor in the imperial family for eleven years. On his arrival at court Arsenius had been given many perks and he lived in great pomp. While living in the Emperor's palace, God gave him grace in the sight of everyone, and they all loved him. He lived a lavish life in the palace, but all the time felt a growing inclination to renounce the world. One day he was praying, and said, “O God teach me how to be saved.” And God’s voice came to him through the Gospel, "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" (Matthew 16:26). Arsenius left Constantinople and came by sea to Alexandria and fled into the wilderness. Sometime around the year 400 he joined the desert monks at Scetes, Egypt, and asked to be admitted among the solitaries who dwelt there. Saint John, though previously warned of the quality of his visitor, took no notice of him and left him standing by himself while he invited the rest to sit down at table. After Arsenius passed the test of humility he soon started to correct certain old habits. Arsenius took every hint and corrected himself.

    In 434 he was forced to leave due to raids on the monasteries and hermitages there by tribesmen from Libya. He relocated to Troe (near Memphis), and also spent some time on the island of Canopus (off Alexandria). He spent the next fifteen years wandering the desert wilderness before returning to Troe to die c. 445 at the age of around 100.

    During the fifty-five years of his solitary life he was always the most lowly dressed of all, punishing himself for his former vanity and worldliness. In like manner, he imposed upon himself severe penances and prayed without ceasing. At all times copious tears of devotion fell from his eyes as he had the gift of tears to a high degree. He invariably denied visitors, no matter what their rank and condition and left to his disciples the care of entertaining them. Saint Arsenius was a man who was very quiet and often silent, as evidenced by an adage of his: "Many times I spoke, and as a result felt sorry, but I never regretted my silence."

    Monday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 395

    Reading 1 Mi 6:1-4, 6-8
    Hear what the LORD says:
    Arise, present your plea before the mountains,
    and let the hills hear your voice!
    Hear, O mountains, the plea of the LORD,
    pay attention, O foundations of the earth!
    For the LORD has a plea against his people,
    and he enters into trial with Israel.

    O my people, what have I done to you,
    or how have I wearied you? Answer me!
    For I brought you up from the land of Egypt,
    from the place of slavery I released you;
    and I sent before you Moses,
    Aaron, and Miriam.

    With what shall I come before the LORD,
    and bow before God most high?
    Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
    with calves a year old?
    Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,
    with myriad streams of oil?
    Shall I give my first-born for my crime,
    the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
    You have been told, O man, what is good,
    and what the LORD requires of you:
    Only to do the right and to love goodness,
    and to walk humbly with your God.

    Responsorial Psalm 50:5-6, 8-9, 16bc-17, 21 and 23
    R. (23b) To the upright I will show the saving power of God.
    “Gather my faithful ones before me,
    those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”
    And the heavens proclaim his justice;
    for God himself is the judge.
    R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God.
    “Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you,
    for your burnt offerings are before me always.
    I take from your house no bullock,
    no goats out of your fold.”
    R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God.
    “Why do you recite my statutes,
    and profess my covenant with your mouth,
    Though you hate discipline
    and cast my words behind you?”
    R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God.
    “When you do these things, shall I be deaf to it?
    Or do you think that I am like yourself?
    I will correct you by drawing them up before your eyes.
    He that offers praise as a sacrifice glorifies me;
    and to him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God.”
    R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God.

    Alleluia Ps 95:8
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    If today you hear his voice,
    harden not your hearts.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 12:38-42
    Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus,
    “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”
    He said to them in reply,
    “An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign,
    but no sign will be given it
    except the sign of Jonah the prophet.
    Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights,
    so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth
    three days and three nights.
    At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
    and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah;
    and there is something greater than Jonah here.
    At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation
    and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth
    to hear the wisdom of Solomon;
    and there is something greater than Solomon here.”

    Saint Margaret of Antioch, Virgin, Martyr, died 304, invoked for kidney disease
    Margaret was a native of Antioch and the daughter of a pagan priest named Aedesius. Her mother having died soon after her birth, Margaret was nursed by a Christian woman about 7 miles from Antioch. Having embraced Christianity and consecrated her virginity to God, Margaret was disowned by her father, adopted by her nurse, and lived in the country keeping sheep with her foster mother (in what is now Turkey). Olybrius, Governor of the Roman Diocese of the East, asked to marry her, but with the demand that she renounce Christianity. Upon her refusal, she was cruelly tortured, and died. Margaret is known as one of the fourteen holy helpers, a term which is given to some saints for their powerful intercession, especially against disease. Margaret is also one of the saints that spoke to Joan of Arc.

    Tuesday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 396

    Reading 1 Mi 7:14-15, 18-20
    Shepherd your people with your staff,
    the flock of your inheritance,
    That dwells apart in a woodland,
    in the midst of Carmel.
    Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead,
    as in the days of old;
    As in the days when you came from the land of Egypt,
    show us wonderful signs.

    Who is there like you, the God who removes guilt
    and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance;
    Who does not persist in anger forever,
    but delights rather in clemency,
    And will again have compassion on us,
    treading underfoot our guilt?
    You will cast into the depths of the sea
    all our sins;
    You will show faithfulness to Jacob,
    and grace to Abraham,
    As you have sworn to our fathers
    from days of old.

    Responsorial Psalm 85:2-4, 5-6, 7-8
    R. (8a) Lord, show us your mercy and love.
    You have favored, O LORD, your land;
    you have brought back the captives of Jacob.
    You have forgiven the guilt of your people;
    you have covered all their sins.
    You have withdrawn all your wrath;
    you have revoked your burning anger.
    R. Lord, show us your mercy and love.
    Restore us, O God our savior,
    and abandon your displeasure against us.
    Will you be ever angry with us,
    prolonging your anger to all generations?
    R. Lord, show us your mercy and love.
    Will you not instead give us life;
    and shall not your people rejoice in you?
    Show us, O LORD, your kindness,
    and grant us your salvation.
    R. Lord, show us your mercy and love.

    Alleluia Jn 14:23
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Whoever loves me will keep my word,
    and my Father will love him
    and we will come to him.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 12:46-50
    While Jesus was speaking to the crowds,
    his mother and his brothers appeared outside,
    wishing to speak with him.
    Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside,
    asking to speak with you.”
    But he said in reply to the one who told him,
    “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
    And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said,
    “Here are my mother and my brothers.
    For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father
    is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

    Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene
    Lectionary: 603

    Reading 1 Sgs 3:1-4b
    The Bride says:
    On my bed at night I sought him
    whom my heart loves–
    I sought him but I did not find him.
    I will rise then and go about the city;
    in the streets and crossings I will seek
    Him whom my heart loves.
    I sought him but I did not find him.
    The watchmen came upon me,
    as they made their rounds of the city:
    Have you seen him whom my heart loves?
    I had hardly left them
    when I found him whom my heart loves.

    OR
    2 Cor 5:14-17

    Brothers and sisters:
    The love of Christ impels us,
    once we have come to the conviction that one died for all;
    therefore, all have died.
    He indeed died for all,
    so that those who live might no longer live for themselves
    but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

    Consequently, from now on we regard no one according to the flesh;
    even if we once knew Christ according to the flesh,
    yet now we know him so no longer.
    So whoever is in Christ is a new creation:
    the old things have passed away;
    behold, new things have come.

    Responsorial Psalm Ps 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9
    R. (2) My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
    O God, you are my God whom I seek;
    for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts
    like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.
    R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
    Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary
    to see your power and your glory,
    For your kindness is a greater good than life;
    my lips shall glorify you.
    R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
    Thus will I bless you while I live;
    lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name.
    As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied,
    and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.
    R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
    You are my help,
    and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.
    My soul clings fast to you;
    your right hand upholds me.
    R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.

    Alleluia
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Tell us Mary, what did you see on the way?
    I saw the glory of the risen Christ, I saw his empty tomb.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Jn 20:1-2, 11-18
    On the first day of the week,
    Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early in the morning,
    while it was still dark,
    and saw the stone removed from the tomb.
    So she ran and went to Simon Peter
    and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them,
    “They have taken the Lord from the tomb,
    and we don’t know where they put him.”

    Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping.
    And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb
    and saw two angels in white sitting there,
    one at the head and one at the feet
    where the Body of Jesus had been.
    And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
    She said to them, “They have taken my Lord,
    and I don’t know where they laid him.”
    When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there,
    but did not know it was Jesus.
    Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?
    Whom are you looking for?”
    She thought it was the gardener and said to him,
    “Sir, if you carried him away,
    tell me where you laid him,
    and I will take him.”
    Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
    She turned and said to him in Hebrew,
    “Rabbouni,” which means Teacher.
    Jesus said to her,
    “Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father.
    But go to my brothers and tell them,
    ‘I am going to my Father and your Father,
    to my God and your God.’”
    Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples,
    “I have seen the Lord,”
    and then reported what he told her.

    Feast day of Saint Mary Magdala, Patron of repentant sinners, died about 77AD
    Mary of Magdala was one of Jesus' most loyal followers. She is mentioned by name twelve times in the canonical gospels, more than many of the Apostles. Her life is an example of God's mercy and grace. The gospels establish that Jesus cleansed her of seven demons (Luke 8:2 and Mark 16:9). She was one of the women who accompanied and aided Jesus in Galilee (Luke 8:1–2), and all four Gospels attest that she witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion and burial; John 19:25–26 further notes that she stood by the cross, near the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Having seen where Jesus was buried (Mark 15:47), she went with two other women on Easter Sunday morning to the tomb to anoint the corpse. Finding the tomb empty, Mary was distraught and asked a nearby person where the body had been taken, but the person was Jesus, Himself. He appeared to her (John 20:17), and instructed her to tell the Apostles that He would be ascending to God the Father.

    Thursday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time
    Lectionary: 398

    Reading 1 Jer 2:1-3, 7-8, 12-13
    This word of the LORD came to me:
    Go, cry out this message for Jerusalem to hear!

    I remember the devotion of your youth,
    how you loved me as a bride,
    Following me in the desert,
    in a land unsown.
    Sacred to the LORD was Israel,
    the first fruits of his harvest;
    Should any presume to partake of them,
    evil would befall them, says the LORD.

    When I brought you into the garden land
    to eat its goodly fruits,
    You entered and defiled my land,
    you made my heritage loathsome.
    The priests asked not,
    “Where is the LORD?”
    Those who dealt with the law knew me not:
    the shepherds rebelled against me.
    The prophets prophesied by Baal,
    and went after useless idols.

    Be amazed at this, O heavens,
    and shudder with sheer horror, says the LORD.
    Two evils have my people done:
    they have forsaken me, the source of living waters;
    They have dug themselves cisterns,
    broken cisterns, that hold no water.

    Responsorial Psalm 36:6-7ab, 8-9, 10-11
    R. (10a) With you is the fountain of life, O Lord.
    O LORD, your mercy reaches to heaven;
    your faithfulness, to the clouds.
    Your justice is like the mountains of God;
    your judgments, like the mighty deep.
    R. With you is the fountain of life, O Lord.
    How precious is your mercy, O God!
    The children of men take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
    They have their fill of the prime gifts of your house;
    from your delightful stream you give them to drink.
    R. With you is the fountain of life, O Lord.
    For with you is the fountain of life,
    and in your light we see light.
    Keep up your mercy toward your friends,
    your just defense of the upright of heart.
    R. With you is the fountain of life, O Lord.

    Alleluia See Mt 11:25
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.
    Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;
    you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.
    R. Alleluia, alleluia.

    Gospel Mt 13:10-17
    The disciples approached Jesus and said,
    “Why do you speak to the crowd in parables?”
    He said to them in reply,
    “Because knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven
    has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted.
    To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich;
    from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
    This is why I speak to them in parables, because
    they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.
    Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says:

    You shall indeed hear but not understand,
    you shall indeed look but never see.
    Gross is the heart of this people,
    they will hardly hear with their ears,
    they have closed their eyes,
    lest they see with their eyes
    and hear with their ears
    and understand with their hearts and be converted
    and I heal them.

    “But blessed are your eyes, because they see,
    and your ears, because they hear.
    Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people
    longed to see what you see but did not see it,
    and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

    Feast day of Saint Bridget of Sweden, Religious, one of six patrons of Europe, died July 23, 1373
    Bridget was the daughter of a governor of Uppland, who had from an early age remarkable religious visions that influenced her entire life and outlook. As a young teenager in 1316 she married Ulf Gudmarsson, later governor of the province of Nericia. She bore eight children, including St. Catherine of Sweden.

    On the death of her husband in 1344, Bridget retired to a life of penance and prayer near the Cistercian monastery of Alvastra on Lake Vetter. To the prior, Peter Olafsson, she dictated the revelations that came to her, and he translated them into Latin. One was a command to found a new religious order, which she was not able to fulfill until near the end of her life, receiving papal permission from Pope Urban V for her order of cloistered nuns in 1370 called the Order of the Most Holy Savior or Bridgittines. She went to Rome in 1350 and, except for several pilgrimages, remained there for the rest of her life, constantly accompanied by Catherine. She exercised a wide apostolate among rich and poor, sheltering the homeless and sinners, and she worked untiringly for the end of the Avignon papacy and for the pope to return to Rome. She was spurred by a vision to visit the Holy Land in 1372, and she died soon after her return to Rome on July 23, 1373. Saint Bridget was given a devotion from Jesus to honor each of the wounds He received in His passion and death. As St. Bridget for a long time wanted to know the number of blows Our Lord received during His Passion, He one day appeared to her and said: “I received 5480 blows on My Body. If you wish to honor them in some way, say 15 Our Fathers and 15 Hail Marys with the following Prayers (which He taught her) for a whole year. When the year is up, you will have honored each one of My Wounds.” Those prayers and promises for whomever says the prayers for a year are given in the Pieta prayer book.
