And Sen. Schumer continues to blame President Trump for not doing the right in regard to COVID-19. Imho Schumer's ranting is helping to ramp things up.

Schumer, You are far, far better off asking for the public to pray at this time than anything else. +

  7. Polish archbishop: Not praying in churches during coronavirus outbreak 'unthinkable'

Poznan, Poland, Mar 10, 2020 / 10:50 am (CNA).- The president of the Polish bishops' conference has asked for an increase in the number of Sunday Masses said in the country so that more people can attend safely amid the coronavirus outbreak.

“In connection with the recommendations of the Chief Sanitary Inspector that there should be no large gatherings of people, I ask to increase – as far as possible – the number of Sunday Masses in churches so that a number of believers can attend the liturgy … according to the guidelines of the sanitary services,” Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki of Poznań wrote in a statement sent March 10 to CNA.

Because among a church's function is to cure spiritual disease, “it is unthinkable that we do not pray in our churches,” he reflected.

According to the World Health Organization, there are 11 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Poland, and zero deaths. The country has imported cases only; that is, all cases have been acquired outside its territory.

Worldwide, there are 109,577 confirmed cases, and 3,809 deaths.

Archbishop Gądecki recalled that in these circumstances, the elderly and sick have no obligation to attend Mass, and added that “there is no requirement to exchange the sign of peace by shaking hands during Holy Mass.”

He asked for prayers for those who have died as a result of coronavirus, adding: “Let us pray for the health of the sick and for the physicians, medical personnel and all services that work to stop the spread of the virus,” and “for the epidemic to end.”

Archbishop Gądecki especially encouraged, “in accordance with the tradition of the Church”, praying the Trisagion, from the Adoration of the Cross during the Mass of the Presanctified on Good Friday.

Many Churches around the world have issued precautionary guidelines for Masses, or cancelled public Masses entirely, because of the coronavirus outbreak which originated in China late last year.

The new strain of coronavirus causes a respiratory disease, COVID-19, and has a fatality rate of roughly 3%. The vast majority of cases and deaths have been in China.

Yes, I did think this was potentially serious so that is why I posted. It seemed to be very infectious which it has proven to be.

But my feeling now (instinct) is that it will burn itself out by summer.

I keep thinking of the College of Cardinals and all the bishops and priests in Rome; and I keep thinking of when the papacy was moved to Avignon. At a time and in a country where a priest could keep a mistress provided he paid the bishop a "stipend". And how in a few short years the plague ravaged the land, taking a third of the priests and bishops with it.

I can't help but wonder if, G_D forbid, His Holiness should contract and die from COVID-19, and a third of the college of cardinals should get sick and either die or resign for health reasons, if the Magisterium would listen to the Holy Spirit and history and change course.

and I just heard on news that U. of Dayton (my alma mater) has had riots where police had to help out due to celebrations for the cancelation of classes! But other news said it was due to also telling students to go home, not just to dorms or other housing!

    a report on this:

    U. of Dayton Students Riot After Being Told to Leave Campus over Coronavirus Fears

At least 1,000 students at the University of Dayton broke out in a riot after being told to leave campus over the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak. The crowd became so violent that police wore riot gear when responding to the chaos.

According to a local news report, students at the University of Dayton rioted at the center of campus on Tuesday evening after they were told that they would have to leave campus as a precaution against the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus.

Local police officers were forced to equip riot gear when responding to the student protest. A video from the riot posted to Twitter shows students lining a small residential street as riot police sprayed tear gas.

In a statement, the University of Dayton claimed that students threw objects at police and jumped on cars. One student was reportedly injured after being struck by a bottle.

“A large disorderly crowd that grew to more than 1,000 people gathered on Lowes Street starting around 11 p.m., throwing objects and bottles in the street and at police, and jumping on cars. Police gave verbal orders to disperse which were ignored. Police initially launched pepper balls, which contain powder with an irritant that disperses quickly, that were unsuccessful in reducing the crowd size,” the university wrote in the statement. “About 2:15 a.m., UD police and additional Dayton police again gave orders to disperse and moved to clear the street, which was effective in dispersing the crowd quickly. At least one person was reportedly injured by a thrown bottle.”

  15. The "oracle" Merkel announcing what she had a hand in causing.

WORD OF THE YEAR: Hamsterkauf (Panic Buying)

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday warned that up to 70% of the country’s population — some 58 million people — could contract the coronavirus.

No doubt the country is now under a full hamsterkauf.

“Hamsterkauf” in the German language means “panic buying.” The word comes from “hamstern” (hoarding) and “kaufen,” (to buy).

German publication The Local says, “this word has also been used to describe the rush on supermarkets that occurs before long holiday weekends when supermarkets will be closed and, as many of us living in Germany know, every Saturday night before supermarkets shut their doors on Sunday. This word is most commonly used with the verb ‘machen,’ as in the phrase Hamsterkäufe machen bei Knappheit, ‘to panic buy.’”

“It’s not too hard for people from the English-speaking world to guess its meaning,” DW.com reported. “After all, they share the same word for the rodent that’s used as a descriptive term in German to indicate that if you do a hamsterkauf, you want a lot of stuff — just as hamsters are eager to store as much food as they can in their cheeks. You never know, it could come in handy.”

The website is making a case for adding the word to the American lexicon.

Panic buying is perhaps part of the German angst that crops up once in a while. The question is: If angst made it into the English language long ago, isn’t it time for hamsterkauf to follow suit and join the likes of dachshund, blitzkrieg, kindergarten, realpolitik and hinterland? Probably not, as compound words stand a far lower chance of ever being incorporated, but never say die in this crazy lexiconic world.

Be that as it may, there’s no denying the fact that a number of English-language publications have explicitly mentioned and explained the German expression for hoarding as they seem to like it quite a bit.

So we say about “hamsterkauf” — learn it, know it, use it. Just stop doing it!

  20. I edited my comment above on this once I found a report that said it was more likely due to the students suddenly being told to go home, not dorms or student housing. Doesn't appear to have been handled very well. It's a Marianist school with the home of THE International Marian Library of all things Mary and main source for most info!

    Scholarship. Outreach. Devotion.
The Marian Library is recognized both nationally and internationally as a center for scholarship on the Blessed Virgin Mary. It serves the research needs of faculty and students of the International Marian Research Institute, the broader University of Dayton community and visitors worldwide. It also documents the diverse expressions of popular devotion to Mary, and it provides public outreach through its exhibits, tours and reference services.
