"Gospel of Matthew" (2014), all words direct from the Bible, filmed in Morocco and apparently, a lot of Arabic type actors attempting to make a more "authentic" interpretation of the book of Mattew.

This is the Christ, maybe they did all 4 Gospels in this style.

It's the opening minutes but all in Arabic, I did watch it in English however:

This is good though, if it teaches those in the Arab world.

I have not seen this but this movie may well be about the miraculous staircase in Santa Fe New Mexico:

I will try to watch it soon.

A lot of us have seen "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", that's a truly wild movie. Here is some more on her from a Catholic source:

Mystics of the Church: Anneliese Michel--A unrecognized and misunderstood victim soul. A closer look at her possession, exorcism and death

The real Emily Rose, Anneliese Michel certainly looks sweet in this picture, poor girl:

    A whole topic in itself.

I think at one point, she meets the Virgin Mary, sort of after her death... it's been awhile since I've seen it. Not sure if I'd want to see it again really, I've seen it at least twice.

The people at Formed TV apparently like it, "Clare and Francis", I saw the first hour, it was reasonably good. Dubbed into English.

You know, these films on Saints appears to be a bit of a cottage industry in Italy, they found a niche and not only do people there like them but they are able to export the films. And overall, these mostly made for TV movies seem to bring up new angles. The fan reviews at formed like this. I thought the actor playing Francis was rather good.

And while here, did one know there is a film on Pope John Paul I?? We hardly hear about him. This may be at Formed as well or somewhere to view. Yes, his Papacy lasted 33 days but if available, I will try to watch it.

"His smile will be remembered forever", so this sounds quite good actually. So, often, it's easy to just kind of forget he was the Holy Father and after all, that's not much time to affect real change or much of any change at all.

I also saw a movie, "The Jewish Cardinal", it was pretty good, not a masterpiece but entertaining and informative. A man with a Jewish background per the World War II years, rose up post-war to become a Cardinal, appointed by JPII I believe.

I found this movie, "The Smile of God" but it is in Italian. First though, this is interesting:

    John Paul I
There is no record of any position from the 33 days of papacy of John Paul I. While he was Patriarch of Venice, Cardinal Albino Luciani visited Fatima on June 10th, 1977, almost one year before becoming Pope (August 26th, 1978) and presided with a pilgrimage of over 50 Italian people from Venice.

According to the newspaper Voz da Fatima, the cardinal reminded the previous presence of John XXIII in Fatima as Patriarch of Venice and in his prayer to the pilgrims, appealed to the fulfillment of the Message of Fatima – penance and prayer, specially the prayer of the rosary – and the observance of the Gospel.

Next day, the next Pope John Paul I met Sister Lucia in the Carmel of Coimbra.

    THE POPES AND FATIMA

And this is indeed what the movie starts out with, His visiting Fatima prior to being made a Pope.

(their may be a dubbed version on one of those more offbeat movie websites, I'm not ready to give out my credit card number in these kinds of cases but we'll see if there is an English language version anywhere)

And Sister Lucia is not wearing glasses? I'll have to see, I'm pretty much lost if the movie is all in Italian but this does interest me, so I will try to find out more. That is her in the movie poster in the prior post.

I actually own the dvd of this :) There’s a Catholic bookstore not too far away that has it and I was interested in learning about JP1

I thought it was in English - I’ll have to double check. I remember enjoying the movie but it has been awhile since I saw it.

I think "Exorcism" movies delve into that dark area and just for me, are better to avoid but... this may be an exception, "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" but that's a judgement call. It's a murky subject.

    "Of Gods and Men".

I saw this movie. The Monks of Tibhirine Algeria were martyred. There is some question on who actually killed them. This was before ISIS but I know one scene shows some real bad looking dudes coming to see them. The Monks were mostly beheaded sad to say. Of course, the movie does not show that. The Monks did not care to leave the Monastery which would have probably saved them.

I think, as shown in the trailer, some did leave.

Books, lots of information on them is out there.

More, he explains this fairly well:

Bishop Barron on "Of Gods and Men" (SPOILERS)

I should watch it again...if one can navigate that "GLORIA TV", maybe they have this free. I don't know, I hope they are not posting films in violation of copyright, they seem to have a lot of these movies. I find it hard though, to find things over there.

Blessed Carlo Gnocchi helped out the children in World War II who were orphans and many of them in fact, were left disable, lame, lost limbs because of the bombing in World War II. The movie on Gnocchi is at formed, "Father of Mercy", with many of his students, he accompanied Italian troops to the Russian front in World War II. So a hard learning experience. Link on formed, a bit long, these serialized Italian movies, it runs around 4 hours but is good. Father Of Mercy (English Audio) - Father of Mercy: Blessed Don Carlo Gnocchi - FORMED

The star, Daniele Liotti also plays Saint Anthony in another movie.

I'd say it's a good movie but maybe not really worth going out of one's way for unless one is very much into Saint Anthony. We lost something not too long ago, I made a prayer to Saint Anthony and there we found it about 15-30 minutes later. So, I seek to say some praying to Saint Anthony every day.

It may be in part, a photo-op; but here, one can see Pope Francis mingling with the crowd of the Don Gnocchi Foundation. It's very touching, the music enjoyable. I think he tends to walk favoring one side, the clip is from October 2019.

Some in the audience wear those Alpine Fedora Hats, Don Carlo Gnocchi was in that division in World War II.

    More on the Gnocchi Foundation:

Also, for the record, I believe the Feast Days of St. Elizabeth Ann Setton and Blessed Andres Bessette are this week. So, some of this was previously posted:

A lot more on these Servants of God:

1897's "In His Steps" by Charles Sheldon is largely where the phrase, WWJD, What Would Jesus Do comes from. That book is considered a bit of a Christian Classic. The full movie is at tubitv, though, here is the crucial opening of the movie where a disheveled young man comes in and interrupts Church. In the book itself, there is a Bishop. Sheldon was actually, a defender of all faiths, against anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish sentiment back in the day, see his bio. He was into the temperance movement as well so, some of this are about how it was back then. There are modern spinoffs as well. The movie as a whole is not faithful to the book. There are modernistic versions as well. I don't want to taint however Sheldon saw things but some say it is "Christian Socialism"....

"In His Steps" is taking from a verse 1 Peter 2: 21

21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

The original 1964 movie: Watch In His Steps (1964) - Free Movies | Tubi (tubitv.com)

There are modern spinoffs as said, this movie, "WWJD II: The Woodcarver" gets many positive reviews:
Watch WWJD II: The Woodcarver (2011) - Free Movies | Tubi (tubitv.com)

So, WWJD may come from elsewhere, I don't know but it was a fad a few years ago and it seems to come from Sheldon's book.

35 minutes long, a brief but well-made film on Faustina:

I read this on her, it really goes into the details of her life, she was actually born in a part of Poland that was Russia at that time. Also, her family really were peasants. It talks about how she and her sister had only one dress to go to church in so sometimes, she could not go, I am so humbled by her. It's unbelievable.

The fascinating thing for me, once you get past the hollywood stuff, is the movie really does a great job handling the topic of demonic possession in a court of law. It is truly a movie where you combine The Exorcism with Law and Order. I enjoy a good scare and good law show so this worked for me. Only movies that ever come close to scaring me are ones dealing with the demonic. The first and second Conjuring movies are descent in that regard but definitely way more hollywood and they change too much from the truth about the Warrens. Particularly how they have Ed doing the exorcisms in the movie. I find the Warrens to be very fascinating individuals though historically and full of faith.

A good movie is "St. Peter, the persecution of Christians" starring the late Omar Sharif, Luca Lionello who plays Judas in the Passion of the Christ is St. Matthew in this one.

Watch St. Peter: The Persecution of Christians - Free TV Series | Tubi (tubitv.com)

It's a good movie, maybe not spiritually earthshaking but okay.

    ----------------

It's interesting tracing actors and actresses from "The Passion of the Christ", one of the Roman Soldiers in that movie is actually, one of the builders of the hospital of Padre Pio and an associate of St. Pio in that movie. So, in a few of these movies, those who were bad guys are now, the good guys.

Padre Pio has 2 dramatic movies on himself at least, "The Miracle Man" I believe is at youtube and then, the other I saw some time ago but was very good, "Between Heaven and Earth"... I'm sure both are very good, I haven't finished "Miracle Man" yet, the Italians have a cottage industry in religious films and a whole lot of them, the St. Rita film remains one of my favorites.
