Well perhaps indeed it does not matter. But the medical terms for blood loss is Exsangination. This is I believe might be how Jewish people would have prepared the Passover lamb, by draining all the blood and thus making it Kosher. The same thing happened to the Lamb of God. I am just meandering.

'The strict prohibition of blood in the Bible (Leviticus 7:26-27; 17:10-14) is the basis for the laws governing the preparation of the meat of animals and birds for food. The usual practice is first to soak the meat in cold water for half an hour and then to salt it thoroughly and leave it covered in salt on a draining-board so that as much as possible of the blood is drained off. An alternative method is to roast the meat over a naked flame. In many communities, nowadays, the butcher attends to this process, relieving his customers from having to do it themselves. The blood of fishes is permitted so there is no process of "salting" for fish.'

Sister Paulette is a mine of information and is teaching me new things all the time.

Apparently the author of , 'The Song of Bernadette' (from which the film was drawn!!) was Jewish!!

Apparently Franz Werfel was a Viennese on the run from the Germans and had been trying to escape over the border from France into Spain. There were too many soldiers so he hid out in a little mountain village called....you guessed it....Lourdes.



While there he got filled with stories of St Bernadette and fell in love with her and her story. He promised God that if he survived the war he would write about the story of Lourdes. Of course first thing he did in America was to tell her tale and it shot to the top of Times Best seller list for six weeks.

Sr Paulette also says Bernadette was really loved and remembered by those she took care of for her joy and humour.

When Fritz died he was buried in Vienna with the Church giving him a Catholic funeral . I have lost count of the number of times I have watched this film and created by a Jewish gentleman! What a story.

 

I think you are onto something.
That is pretty much why we have two Eucharistic Species isn't it?
The body and blood of Jesus are, in the visible accidents of bread and wine, seen to be completely separated symbolising the Paschal Sacrifice.
Of course Jesus is invisibly fully present in both.
Interestingly (if I recall my theology days correctly) the mysterious means by which Jesus is fully present in each species is not exactly the same according to Aquinas.

 

What a fascinating observation. I always take the two rays in the image as representative - streams of grace from the glorified Jesus. The great gifts won for us through his death on the Cross. I never knew about the cousin in New York. Wonderful.

There are several images of the Divine Mercy. Currently the most popular, created in thanksgiving after WWII by Adolph Hyla, a Pole (from the same town as Karol Wojtyla's father), was painted after the death of Faustina. The only image she ever 'approved' was the one painted in Vilnius, which Padraig also shows on this thread. It's interesting to note (rabbit hole warning?) while on the subject of the image, that the Hyla picture does not follow the description of Jesus by St Faustina. She described Christ as looking downwards, and with a hand slightly raised in blessing. The Hyla picture shows Jesus looking straight at ya, and his hand looks as if he's waving.

Father Sopocko was so appalled by the Hyla image (for a number of reasons) that he asked the painter not to make any more copies. Hyla ignored him. Fr Sopocko believed Faustina would not have liked this interpretation. He also mentioned the depiction of the red and white rays which should look supernatural and not like ropes.

EWTN made a documentary showing the face of Christ on the Holy Shroud can be superimposed on the face of the Vilnius image (not the Hyla); the skull is a near perfect match.

You can all guess which image I have on my wall - I bought it at Nowa Huta (smug!) and it already had a little frame.

Just as the models you see in the glossy magazines are not truly the real-life models .... this is NOT the face visible in the Shroud of Turin.

 

Well I am drawing to an with Sr Paulette's book. No doubt the sister is in heaven. She had such a deep love for God especially in His poor.

I enjoyed the book and learnt a lot. One place where I think maybe she erred was in her constant references to Islam .She sees the rise of Islam as the great Sign of the Age. I would say the rise of radical Islam may be one of the signs but I don't think it is really what Our Lady, sent from heaven points the finger at in modern apparitions.

Our Lady points the finger at each and everyone of us asking us to convert. In effect to point the finger at Islam is to miss the point. First we must look within ,were the Kingdom of God lies. Then at the Church, the mystical Body of Christ.

We must all of us pray the prayer of the Chinese Missionary, 'Lord convert the whole world beginning with myself'.'

The we must pray convert all the peoples of the world beginning with your Church.

May God rest the soul of Sister Paulette , may she rest in peace.

I've only just started the first few pages.

 

I like the way in a book you get to meet the author too, even though she never talks about herself,

Sister Paulette comes across strong and feisty. Very proud of having a cousin as a saint. Full of love for the Church, the people of God.

 

Strong and feisty-I thought that description was held only for the Irish???
I am about 1/3 of the way in- liking so far though the teacher in me is finding lots of typos etc and the difficult sequencing of ideas jumps around and distracts me- I am sure it is in the translation- definately enjoying diff small insights into St Faustinas early life - it's been awhile since I have read her diary
But I will focus on the message and story for the rest of the book!

 

I haven't finished the book yet but am disappointed so far. It's very badly written, for one thing and desperately needs a good editor - eg: Faustina's birthplace is wrongly spelled and this could easily have been checked. Perhaps it will improve, but so far it is an account of Faustina's life that one can find elsewhere. I wasn't aware it was a translation - perhaps that is part of the problem.

 

I wouldn't say it was a classic , Charity. But I enjoyed it.
