Speaking of John, the one who was to announce the Messiah, John who announced the "Lamb of God" at the ba ptism of Jesus - while in Herod's prison he sent some of his followers to ask if He was the Messiah (Matt 11.2). That always struck me as rather odd!

In a way, I understand that Jesus healed on the Sabbath because it was an act that exalted His own power and divinity, just as we do on Sunday rest. However, I wonder if, when Jesus picked ears of grain on the Sabbath, He was paving the way for absolute rest on the holy day to be relativized in certain circumstances. Does anyone know the Catholic answer to this? Luke 6:1-5 On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grain fields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” And Jesus answered, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” And he said to them, “The Son of man is lord of the Sabbath.”

I don’t know much but after I became Catholic in my younger years, an older friend told me that food preparation and dining out was okay on the Sabbath because people have to eat. It seemed reasonable.
