Another scientific theory down the drain...

I admit I don't understand much of the details, but what strikes me about this article is just how quickly what science takes as facts can be quickly changed. How often those of us with non-scientific explanations for life and nature are ridiculed and yet science is always held us as absolute fact. Now, I believe science has an important place and it leads to so much good ( and bad) in our world. But it doesn't explain it all, does it?

Hi miker, I have a background in science (I have a degree in biology) and science is not absolute fact, although they try to make it out to be. Science is a process used to discover how things work. This process was invented by humans, and is not perfect. It can tell us a lot, but not everything, and there is a lot of potential for bias in the interpretation. For example, there is a lot of evidence against macro evolution (species evolving into other species over time), but scientists tend to ignore that evidence because it doesn't fit their world view. I argued with my professors about this, and they admitted I was right. A really good book on this is called "Darwin's Black Box" and it is by a Catholic scientist.

Science means "knowledge of". hence we have political science, sociological science, science of linguistics etc. I like to speak about "religious science" to the kids at school because it makes them sit up and think.

Science has come to be understood mainly as Knowledge of the natural and physical world. Therefore anything that explores a non-physical reality (e.g. heaven, the existence of God) has tended to be dismissed by today's young people who have been indoctrinated with this misunderstanding of science. Many Biologists, in particular, are using science today to promote the New Atheism, a very aggressive and intolerant view of society.

So the way I teach it is, that Science depends on as much of a Faith position as religion or philosophy. Some science is supported by good evidence, some science is not. A scientist has an idea and sets about trying to find the evidence to prove it. He may win, he may lose. What science is NOT is exact. It's a leap in the dark. Like faith.

Then I finish by showing them a big photograph of Fr Georges Le Maitre the Belgian Catholic priest who discovered the Big Bang theory. They are silent for about ten seconds, then ask if it's true. "what, that God invented science ? yes. it's true." I say.

Hmmm. Atheists. Bet you're not laughing now.
