Sr Briege and Fr Kevin withdraw support of DFOT

Sr Briege McKenna and Fr Kevin Scallon have published statements on their websites announcing their withdrawal of support for the organisation Direction For Our Times which promotes Anne the Lay Apostle.

    • An important notice from Sr Briege:

It is with regret that I have discerned the need to withdraw my endorsement and support of Direction for Our Times. I am praying that God’s will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

    ST CLARE SISTERS RETREAT MINISTRY

    • An important notice from Fr Kevin:

Recent information has caused me to question the authenticity of Direction for Our Times. Regretfully I’ve come to discern that I can no longer support or encourage involvement in this organization.

    INTERCESSION FOR PRIESTS

An earlier statement of Sr Briege, “I feel very convinced of the authenticity of the messages from Anne” was used by DFOT as an endorsement for its publications. This no longer appears on the DFOT website, which suggests that Sr Briege may have informed the organisation of her withdrawal of support and requested DFOT to remove the endorsement statement.

Obviously, Sr Briege’s conviction has changed, probably in the light of the “recent information” that Fr Kevin mentions in his statement. But we can take it that both Sr Briege and Fr Kevin are no longer convinced of the authenticity of the messages of Anne. Will other religious now reconsider their support for DFOT in the light of Sr Briege and Fr Kevin’s change of mind?

Sr Briege and Fr Kevin are in Ireland for the month of August, leading the Intercession For Priests Retreat at All Hallows College in Dublin.

What might be termed the charismatic edge of the church has taken some considerable knocks in recent years, which only serves to strengthen elements of the church that are entirely opposed to any charismatic qualities whatever in the church. For instance, recall Machado, Corapi and now Anne the so-called Apostle (leaving out for the moment, Christina Gallagher) each of whom has drawn greatly on the pockets of the sincere, the holy, the elderly and the religious. The orthodox church has a right to be concerned about the exploitation of the innocent, the vulnerable and the poor, particularly when that exploitation has the capacity to greatly enrich individuals who might even create large organisations around themselves which nowadays seems to always include ancillary ownership of considerable properties, always in the name (allegedly) of Our Lady who gave birth to the Savior in a barn She did not own...
In the beginning, some seven years ago, Anne's booklets showered onto prayer groups free of charge with a suggestion of a donation towards defraying costs. As someone interested in publishing and in Catholicism, I immediately read the first seven or eight booklets, but was worried that elderly Catholics and religious were being offered so many booklets (for donations) which could easily have been printed as a single volume, thereby saving costs and donations. Soon after, I noticed on the Internet that an Illinois publisher was charging $s for the booklets. Later, at a prayer group, when I challenged the notion that Anne was working for God for free, I was told, "She has to have expenses." I did not like this multiplicity of booklets each demanding its own charge when all could have been printed as one volume. So, I took a few days off to closely read and discern the content of this newly fledged 'Apostle' of God.
Space is limited here, but let me just quote excerpts of the first two volumes printed 7 years ago. The early Greek (non-Christian) thinkers had an idea that God was a kind of Watchmaker who had to work to maintain and run the universe, which ran like a watch but which might need work and repair. Look for this non-Christian notion in what follows; also, look at the confusion in the Trinity as to whether Jesus is about to return, has returned or is already here and not being respected. Look at the notion of the forgiveness of sins outside the sacrament of reconciliation. Judge for yourself - I judged nearly seven years ago and was waiting for the day when Sr. Briege and Fr. Kevin would come to their senses about this very troubled lady who needs prayers and healing. Here we go - let the "locutions" speak for themselves now:

    [Jesus, re Heaven]

"... You will feel no pain or fatigue here, but, at times, you will rest in ideas and concepts so that you can learn them. You see, My children, your learning continues and the quenching of the thirst for knowledge is a part of heaven because anyone is able to learn about any topic that sparks their curiosity. ... It is coming into the mystery of your universe in such a way that you then help to direct the universe."
    Vol II, p.27

[Jesus, re Sin] "I forgive you any sins even before these sins are committed."

    Vol II, p.31

'.'Come back to Me now, My little lost soul, and I will lift all punishment due you. Repent and throw yourself into My arms, I will forgive you immediately. I have already done so. ... I am here in the tabernacle. Come to Me here and I will forgive all sin."
    Vol II, p.43

[Jesus, re Slowness] "So, slow down, dear ones... I do not like to hurry, and you carry Me with you."

    Vol 11, P. 59

[Jesus, re Haste] "You may feel as though you are moving quite swiftly in these spiritual matters. Do not fear this haste as I am personally determining the speed at which I need you to ascend. In days past, perhaps your conversion would be more gentle and leisurely. I do not will that now and it is not what 1 require. I need my soldiers prepared quickly."
    Vol 11, p. 64

    [Jesus, re Finished]

“If a soul rejects Me now, it is finished."

    Vol 11, p. 69

    [Jesus, re Asthma]

".If you are ill particularly, spend your days with Me and 1 can show you heights of holiness that will leave you breathless."
    Vol II, p. 72

[Jesus, re Flaws] "Now, earthly life being what it is, and human beings being flawed, as they are in their search for perfection.,."

    Vol II, P. 89

[Jesus, re No Time At All] I can cleanse your heart in no time at all if you are willing to let me."

    Vol 11, P. 91

[Jesus the Aggressive] "'My children, I am not aggressive, unless one of My own is under attack and needs My protection."

    Vol 11, p. 97

[Blessed Mother] "Jesus intends to bring each of you to a high level of holiness in a relatively short time."
    Vol 11, p. 105

[God the Father] "My children, as your Father, I retain a certain amount of authority over you. ... I speak of the artificial noise that you surround yourself with, in an effort to feel safe. ... Your spirits suffocate under the attack of all of this noise. you will not know how to conduct yourself in the next world with its beautiful quiet..."
    Vol III, p. 13

[God the Father] "The coming of My kingdom is the coming of heaven or the expansion of heaven to earth."

    Vol III, p.25

[God the Father on Grace] "Would you feel confident that while you have made mistakes you have done your best and can offer me a fair trade for your eternal reward? Could you even say, 'God, I have wasted much of My time here on earth but I see that you are the Creator and I bow before you?' That is all that is necessary for your salvation, child, but you are going to wish that you had a small bit of something to give Me."
    Vol III, p.26

[Blessed Mother] I would talk about fear today. ...a daily prayer regime. It is the regime I wish to speak about today. ... I also want to say that the sacrament of Confession must be dusted off and reinstituted."
    Vol Ill, P.41

[Blessed Mother] "God can no longer protect His children in this world, and that is why this world must change."
    Vol Ill, p. 47

[Blessed Mother] "Priests must agree to be led by this holy man. In fact, they do agree to be led by him when they are ordained. ...My son, there is really no battle left. ...God has decreed that the time of the evil one is over. ...Your part deals with the reassertion of the authority of the church. No more compromise. The rules are clear. There is no need and no benefit to extended discussion. ...All of God's children are welcome in heaven, assuming the correct posture of repentance."

    Vol Ill, p.55~56

[Blessed Mother on Heaven] ",There is great knowledge to be had and anything you want to learn, you can learn. Imagine exulting in the accomplishments of all of the saints... In heaven, there are vast spaces, filled with every bit of beauty ever created by God. If, on earth, you create something that is divinely inspired, and this is what we want from you, it will endure in heaven, to be admired and explored by your brothers and sisters. ...He is never spiteful, never vengeful, and never punishes to punish."

    Vol Ill, p. 79 80

    [Blessed Mother on Help]
"I cannot interfere, though, if you march toward the wrong direction."'
    Vol Ill, p. 87

'We want to guide you and if you turn the wrong way, we will simply correct you."
    Vol Ill. p.96

    [Blessed Mother on the Creator]
"How happy and blessed 1 am to be the mother of this divine, gentle creature."
    Vol Ill, p.90

[Jesus Unsure if he has Come, is Coming, or Will Return]
"I come to you... God has taken his children back to His breast, never to be parted.
... because 1 have come. ...Your salvation is at hand."

    Vol IV, p.2 3

'Well, I have been away from your world in the physical sense for many years. Now I prepare to return. I am ready."
    Vol IV, p. 15

[God the Father Unsure Also] "...because the world is awaiting the return of the Saviour. ...We will prepare the world for the Return of My Son."
    Vol IV, p. 6

[Jesus on the Kingdom] "You will be lifted up in My Kingdom. You will be one of My close advisors and friends who, upon My return, will bring me all manner of news and requests. You will say, 'Lord, God of this World, all is not well with this soul. This soul needs your special help.

...You will say also, 'Lord, God of this world, 1 would like to see your influence more strongly in this school, this hospital, this church, this religious order, this political group.' 1 will say, good idea, servant of the King. ...You will not be spit upon any longer."
    Vol IV, p. 16

These are just excerpts from the first two volumes. How God could be claimed to author such drivel makes me cringe for Catholicism. How much money has been exploited from the sincere, the elderly, the vulnerable, the poorest of the poor, by this Organisation? No wonder so many priests and religious nowadays cringe when they hear about 'locutions'...

To bring the phenomena of Medjugorje and/or Garabandal into the Anne debate is unwarranted. While Anne depended initially solely on the blessing of Sr. Briege and Fr. Kevin for her launching upon Catholic prayer groups, Medjugorje is a phenomenon that has a multiplicity of its own evidence and conversions and sacraments and healings and fruits... Even I, as a total sceptic who travelled to Medjugorje quite accidentally some years ago, have been surprised by its fruits of conversion and sacraments and vocations, not forgetting its outright miraculous healings in some documented cases. Medjugorje has survived over thirty years and continues to surprise, even though I personally regret that one or two of the visionaries have seemingly amassed great wealth through provision of $100 a day hostel facilities and/or 'stipends' for speaking at American gatherings, sometimes taking tens of thousand of dollars in donations after a single talk. This alone makes me unhappy about the lifestyle of the visionaries, not of the essence of Medjugorje itself.

Garabandal was in a sense authenticated to a degree by Saint Pio of Pietrelcina - not least in his recommending Joey Lomangino to go there, but also in his bequeathing the last thing he could give after his death - the transparent veil that covered his face in the coffin - to Conchita and which a priest friend of mine has seen and held while meeting Conchita in New York.

It is very moving to arrive at the road's end above Cosio at the untouched village of Garabandal, where development is almost unknown since the 1960s, to pray at the pines and to see the only plaque nearby - a plaque of the face of Padre Pio with the essential line: "It would be easier for the world to exist without the sun than without the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass". In its amazing untouched beauty and wildness, where the road into the hills ends, Garabandal speaks for itself with the blessing of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina haunting its quietness...

Anyone travelling in Cantabria in Northern Spain should take the mountain road and stay with Lucia and Isidro opposite the little church in 'Articulos Religiosos' - a few days on the hillside make a perfect retreat...

A very far cry from these empire builders who constantly seek to amass donations for large properties on this earth...

    Hi all
I have been reading about Anne a lay apostle,I would just like to add that all Anne's writings have to be approved by Bishop Leo O Reilly. A full time spiritual director (Fr.Darragh Connolly) was appointed by the Bishop some yrs.back. Her writings & messages are also submitted to the doctrine of faith in the Vatican. DFOT have not purchased Holy trinity abbey in Kilnacrott. It is with great sadness that Fr.Kevin & Sr.Briege have withdrawn there support. I have met Anne & Fr.Darragh once or twice & feel good about what they are doing. I have been to Medugorje many times & get the same feeling there. My own belief in these is, until the church makes her final decision, I will continue to follow both as they give so much hope,to a World without hope. God bless All

As I am new to the forum & have been reading, what has been said about Anne &fr.Kevin & Sr.Briege. I would like to enclose the following reply by Dr.Mark Miravalle. Just to add ,see how her local Bishop & the Church stand on this.
“You Will Know Them By Their Fruits”
It has been brought to my attention that a few individuals have publicly questioned the messages of Anne a Lay Apostle and the subsequent spiritual movement of the Lay Apostles of Jesus Christ the Returning King as distributed by Direction For Our Times. I would like to take this opportunity to re-affirm in the strongest possible way my own belief in the supernatural character of these messages. I do so based on the appropriate criteria used by the Catholic Church for an authentic evaluation of reported private revelation: 1. the messages being in complete theological and doctrinal conformity with the teachings of the Church’s Magisterium; 2. the phenomena of the locutions and other forms of message transmittance being consistent with the mystical tradition of the Church; and 3. the spiritual fruits of conversion, healing, peace, joy, and return to Jesus and to the Church which have been experienced on five continents as fruits of these messages.
In the final analysis, my opinion, or that of any other individuals, are of course entirely secondary to the discernment of these messages which is conducted by proper Church authority. This is where our true peace lies. Fortunately in this case, Bishop Leo O’Reilly of the Diocese of Kilmore, Ireland (the diocese in which the messages have been received), has read the messages and given his permission for their international distribution. He has also deemed the messages worthy of a formal Church commission of evaluation, which is presently proceeding. Therefore in obedience, trust, and confidence in the present discernment of the proper Church authority, the messages of the Lay Apostolate of Jesus Christ the Returning King may be read and distributed freely and peacefully.
For those who have personally experienced the extraordinary flow of graces emanating from these messages, the counsel of Jesus in the Gospel regarding proper discernment of prophecy is also most re-assuring: “You will know them by their fruits” (Mt. 7:16).

    Hi, Mark.

The following line was enough for me when I read the initial book printing seven years ago - you don't have to be a professor or theologian to work out the absurdity of this one:

[Jesus, re Sin] "I forgive you any sins even before these sins are committed."

    Vol II, p.31

What that does for the sacrament of reconciliation is fairly obvious...

This very troubled woman needs our prayers. Many's a bishop has made mistakes and fallen from grace - it matters little that a bishop has initially supported these so-called utterances of the Godhead. Two people very closely associated with Anne have pulled the plug for very serious reasons indeed - it must have cost them a lot to announce this after 7 years of support. Prudence and wisdom would warn the unwary to be extra careful following this withdrawal of support.

Regarding fruits, it is about two years since people in Medjugorje were openly discussing how a very prominent married man [not being named here] was seeking an annulment and arranging to leave his wife and children to become 'An Apostle' - what that does for the sacrament of marriage is fairly obvious as well. This whole 'apostle' word has been aggrandized beyond its limits...

You can only take a horse to water...

A few years my wife arrived from a prayer meeting with “the volumes”. I read them and later bought “climbing the mountain” myself. The fact that bishop O’Reilly was providing some support to the Author impressed me. I was emailed regarding the provision of a donation for the purchase of Killnacrott Abbey by DOFT. I sent a draft for €300. After 2-3 weeks when there was no receipt or acknowledgement I called and was told that It had arrived and thanks. Subsequently I read that DOFT was no longer interested in the purchase of this Abbey and had been given the accommodation the required by the bishop. What then of my donation and that of countless others? Then we hard that Sr Briege McKenna and Her SD had withdrawn support. This does not sway me one way or the other as I have serious reservations about Sr Briege. Earlier this month she spoke in Knock, Ireland at a special day for Priests. Not for the first time in Knock her homily included a powerful story of forgiveness regarding a man responsible for the deaths of a Father and Mother and their 2 children in a railroad crossing accident several decades ago. I have trawled every newspaper and website I can but can find no evidence whatever of such an accident taken place. Maybe someone here is aware of this story and its validity.
Anyway the main beef I have with DOFT is the website is a selling tool for books and DVDs etc. Buy this, buy that, distribute the volumes etc. The monthly message is impressive, or is it? Could not any well versed Catholic who is familiar with previous Messages, write next months message? I think I could. Do not get me wrong, I have been taken in by DOFT and it may be genuine. However, if as I believe, the Medjugorje story is true, what purpose does DOFT serve. I do hope “Anne” makes a statement on the issue soon. God Bless All.

    The Church's Position

Anne works within the magisterium of the Church and in complete obedience to her local bishop. Nothing that Anne writes is published without the permission of her bishop or his designated representative.

Bishop Leo O'Reilly of the Diocese of Kilmore in Ireland has assigned a Chaplain to work on a full time basis with Direction For Our Times. All writings have been submitted to the bishop and he has given permission for their publication. In addition to the permission for publication, the bishop has submitted the writings to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

On June 8, 2009, Bishop Leo O’Reilly formed a theological commission to examine the messages and enquire into the nature of the experiences of Anne, a lay apostle.  This commission’s work is underway and is to report to Bishop O’Reilly in due course.

Regarding Anne's writings and the organization, Direction For Our Times, the bishop has issued a letter which states:

    To Whom It May Concern:
Direction For Our Times (DFOT) is a religious movement founded by "Anne," a lay apostle from our diocese who wishes to remain anonymous. The movement is in its infancy and does not as yet enjoy canonical status. I have asked a priest of the diocese, Fr. Darragh Connolly, to assist in the work of the movement and to ensure that in all its works and publications it remains firmly within the teaching and practice of the Catholic Church.

I have known "Anne," the founder of the movement, for several years.  She is a Catholic in good standing in the diocese, a wife and mother of small children, and a woman of deep spirituality. From the beginning, she has always been anxious that everything connected with the movement be subject to the authority of the Church. She has submitted all her writings to me and will not publish anything without my permission. She has submitted her writings to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and I have done so, as well.

In so far as I am able to judge, she is orthodox in her writings and teaching. Her spirituality and the spiritual path that she proposes to those who wish to accept it are in conformity with the teachings of the Church and of the great spiritual writers of the past and present.

Here's a prediction: following the decision by Fr. Kevin Scallon and Sr. Briege McKenna to withdraw all support from this alleged locutionist for very serious reasons, you can take it for granted that Bishop O'Reilly will very shortly do likewise. You can be quite sure that Fr. Kevin and Sr. Briege did not withdraw their support without fully informing Bishop O'Reilly in advance. His response may take a little longer, but is surely in the pipeline. We'll see whether Anne's obedience stretches to shutting down shop altogether after the organisation has become so large and so wealthy along the way. As ever with these kinds of wealth-generating groups, it is the widow's mite that has so often been lifted...

    I just received this message:

    Statement by Bishop Leo O'Reilly
    regarding Direction for Our Times

    September 2, 2011

    To Whom It May Concern:

I offer an update on the present status of Anne, a lay apostle and Direction for Our Times.

I initially granted permission for the distribution of the messages and written materials of Anne. This position remains unchanged. The writings and materials may continue to be distributed. As pointed out in my letter on the DFOT website, the permission to distribute the messages does not imply a final judgment on whether they are authentic private revelation. A final judgment on that question must await the outcome of an official Church inquiry into these matters.

Following Church protocol, I set up a diocesan commission over a year ago to inquire into the writings of Anne and to evaluate her reports of receiving messages from heaven. That work of evaluation is continuing and the outcome of it will be made public in due course.

I hope this statement is helpful in the clarification of these matters.

    Yours sincerely in Christ,

    Leo O'Reilly

The following is the message recd. By Anne frm Jesus. I don't think any human being wrote this
    God Bless all

    September 1, 2011

    Jesus

Dear apostles, it is with joy that I speak with you today.  When I contemplate your fidelity to My plan for mercy, I feel joy.   When I contemplate your fidelity to holiness, I feel joy.  Do not pause in your commitment to becoming holier.  This calm movement into the Spirit of gentleness and kindness should help you to view others with compassion, yes, but also yourself.  Do you view yourself with compassion?  Do you offer kindness and mercy toward yourself when you contemplate your condition?  My friends, My dearest friends, be careful to view yourself as I view you.  Be careful not to view yourself in harsh light that seeks to condemn.  If you are tempted against mercy for yourself, then truly, you are tempted against truth.  Because it is only with mercy and love that I greet your present condition and your attempts to advance in holiness.  I am love.  I could hardly ask you to love others and then withhold love from you.  That would be a flawed plan, destined to fail.  My plan is perfect.  I give you a receptive heart, you receive My love in abundance, and then stand for Heaven to be a well on earth which both stores and distributes love.  Beloved apostle, search your heart today.  If you do not find mercy and compassion for yourself in your heart, come to Me at once and ask Me to give these things to you.  My plan for you and for the world will not advance as quickly as necessary if you do not accept your present condition and understand My perfect love for you.  Your potential for holiness has not yet been fully achieved, of course, and I want you to advance.  And I ask that you do so in confidence, joy and hope.  Rejoice.  I am with you.

Its realy quite extraordinaI think that this lady has come under the kind of attack she has and, apparently from the kind of very good folks who are doing the attacking.

I think you know we have to distinguish the lady herself from those who follow her. For we are all of us sinners and all of us:

    Romans 3:23

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Its the same with this forum, I am sure we all try our best but sometimes at one time or another write things or do things which....well we might have written or put better...its part of the human condition of th fact we are sinners. But the faults we fall into do not negate the good things.

If her Bishop is inclined to go along with this for the time being then so am I.

If the Bishop knocks it back, then so will I.

But till that day...... I just think its wonderful:wink:

I am not surprised at so many negative posts on the messages of Anne but somewhat perplexed on why the negativity. I have been reading the messages for 6 years now and I can say that when I started to read the negative posts not just from this website but others, I thought about my own experience. Reading the messages have most definitely brought me closer in my relationship with my Lord! When I examine the fruits of what I received in reading these messages, I know they are authentic. satan will work to stop this mission and he is already trying through people who think that they know what they are talking about by judging Anne and saying she is a fraud. Be careful not to be the devil's advocate in this matter. Good fruits are not from the evil one and there are many good fruits from many who have read these messages.

I think the lives of the saints show us that the time to worry is not when we are attacked..the real time to worry is when we are NOT attacked.

If I was Ann I would think of this and take comfort from it.

“And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’…For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:7-10).

I'm skeptical of Anne the Lay Apostle
It seems to me that the Church and others have not quite caught up to the situation
whereby a professional writer does their 'Catholic research' and study and produces volumes of work which the
Church can't find anything which is in contradiction to the faith.

Another trend that Anne shares with a few other visionaries is pursuing impramaturs from retired Phillipine Bishops outside the visionaries
home diocese. Imprimaturs must be sought from the home dioscesean Bishop otherwise they are illicit. A Phillipine Bishop impramatur for
locutions/messages or visions outside of the Phillipines is highly suspect.

Our Lady of Emmitsburg seemed to turn out to be one of these
whereby over time the regular prayer group attendees finally clued in to Gianna Sullivans side spiritual readings(writings of Saints et al) and noticed paragraphs, phrases and paraphrases
showing up in her messages and writings in a timely fashion coinciding with her side readings and finally called foul. The internet allowed them to search on these things and Gianna Sullivan was safely operating for quite a few years before the internet.

I'm not sure what DFOT(Anne Lay Apostle) messages are composed of but it seems that
their 'mission' is to promote parish seminars for Anne to show up and/or sell books.
Why arent these books in pdf format on the website for free or nominal charge?
Doesnt sound like much of a Godly mission to disseminate. The only free pdf that
DFOT disseminates is how to organize these seminars for Anne to show.

Perhaps the best website currently dealing with the issues of Anne is
    http://d-rium.blogspot.com/
    or more specifically http://d-rium.blogspot.com/search/label/anne%20a%20lay%20apostle
    or http://d-rium.blogspot.com/search/label/direction%20for%20our%20times

Some of those articles are from within the org. DFOT where they talk heavily of their 'mission'.
Which at best, my unattentive mind can figure out is to sell fluffy airy books.
At least, TheWarningSecondComing.com categorizes all their messages so that they are easily available
and half of them are available in pdf format for free...now that's what I call a 'mission' to disseminate.

All of The Volumes, The Heaven Speaks Booklets & all of The Newsletters are available free on PDF format on the DFOT website. I live at the opposite side of the country to DFOT, it was back in 2006 that I first read Climbing the Mountain which I purchased online from a bookshop in the US. Since then I have read all of the books.DFOT sent me many of the books free. The books are very uplifting & full of hope. They have changed my life for the good. Some people will believe & some won't & we should give each other that right.
God sent his only Son Jesus to this world to help us & you see what we did to him
    God Bless all

These books have also changed my life for the good. Personally the messages prepared me for my husband's death 9 months ago. I read these messages to him when he was sick and when he was dying and it gave us comfort as a married couple knowing that God was with us. We experienced His love and grace at the time of my husbands illness and death, and even now after losing my best friend here on earth I continue to read these messages because they give me hope that God is still with me. I look at the fruits of these messages and I see nothing but God's goodness!
