An Unpublished Manuscript on Purgatory

Years and years ago my Spiritual Director and Father , Father Bernard asked me a simple question.. and he had been directing me since I was 15 years old:

'Padraig I cannot understand how after all the evil terrible things you have done that you are so much at peace with it all? How do you seem so untroubled with your past?'

To which I replied with the scripture:

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

Then I said,

'This is Scripture. I really believe what it says.'

You know all these years later I still do.

 

I also love what Jesus said to Mary Magdalene that because she had been forgiven much she loved much. In the Middle Ages they thought Mary Magdalen was the greatest saint because of this.

I know I am a great sinner. But because of this I know I have a great saviour.

 

You know a saint is not a saint because they do not or have not sinned.

No a saint is a saint because although they have sinned and do sin they very much try not to sin again.

In other words they keep on trying and very much rely on God's grace to do so,
they count on God to carry them over His shoulder onwards on home..

 

I think, looking back on it, if I had never fallen God could never have had a chance to pick me up. ..and if God had never picked me up I would never have had a chance at Salvation.

I was always too big to have entered heaven. Sin made me small again. It taught me that God never ever needed me, but that I always, always needed God.

 

We trust in Divine Mercy, oh blood and water which gushed forth from the heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in you.

I have imagined my judgement day (with a sense of dread) but my first response will be Lord I absolutely trust in your mercy otherwise I would have to condemn myself.

 

If it can be said that one thing God does not like about us, His children, it is this.

That we do not trust in His forgiveness.

This is the unforgiveable sin.

This truly is to spit in the face of God.

He never forgives this. There is the darkest place there is no going back from.

His love encompasses all else but not this.

 

Think of St. Paul who wrote:Trustworthy is the saying, and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

St. Faustina's diary:
“My Heart overflows with great mercy for souls, and especially for poor sinners. If only they could understand that I am the best of Fathers to them and that it is for them that the Blood and Water flowed from My Heart as from a fount overflowing with mercy.” —Diary 367

 

I go to mass every day and pray all the time , not because I am a saint but because I am a great sinner.

It is an effort perpetually and continually to cast myself on the Mercy of the good God, not only for sins past but for sins present.

Lord Jesus Christ ,Son of God , have mercy on me a sinner.
