COVID-19: Decree regarding the celebration of the Easter Triduum

    By Vatican News

A Decree entitled “In time of Covid-19” (II), has been issued by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on Wednesday, 25 March 2020. The new document updates an earlier decree, dated 19 March 2020. It contains responses to questions it has received regarding the celebration of the Easter liturgy. Both Decrees are issued “by mandate of the Supreme Pontiff, for the year 2020 only”.

    Date Easter is celebrated
Since the Solemnity of Easter cannot be transferred, the Decree states that, “in the countries which have been struck by the disease and where restrictions around the assembly and movement of people have been imposed, Bishops and priests may celebrate the rites of Holy Week without the presence of the people and in a suitable place, avoiding concelebration and omitting the sign of peace”.

Vatican Decree intended to stop contagion, not prayer

    Participation of the faithful
The Decree encourages pastors to inform the faithful of the times of the liturgical celebrations, “so that they can prayerfully unite themselves in their homes” to the prayer of the Church. In this regard, the Decree continues, the “means of live (not recorded) telematic broadcasts can be of help”. It then emphasizes how important it is to dedicate “adequate time for prayer”. The Liturgy of the Hours, it noted, is especially important.

    Palm Sunday
Holy Week begins with the celebration of Palm Sunday. “The Commemoration of the Lord’s Entrance into Jerusalem is to be celebrated within sacred buildings”, the Decree says. When celebrated in Cathedral churches, it specifies the second form from the Roman Missal is to be used, and the third form when it takes place in parish churches.

    The Chrism Mass
The latest Decree says that the Episcopal Conferences “will be able to give indications about a possible transfer to another date" for the Chrism Mass. It is generally celebrated in every diocese on Holy Thursday, or on another day of Holy Week.

    Holy Thursday
On Holy Thursday, the “washing of the feet, which is already optional, is to be omitted” the Decree says. The customary procession at the conclusion of the Mass, when the Blessed Sacrament is taken to the Altar of Repose, is to likewise omitted. The Blessed Sacrament is to be reposed in the tabernacle.

The Decree grants special permission to all priests to celebrate Mass “in a suitable place, without the presence of the people”.

    Good Friday
Wherever the celebration of the Passion of the Lord takes place, the Decree directs Bishops to “arrange to have a special intention prepared for those who find themselves in distress, the sick, the dead”. The decree also indicates that “the adoration of the Cross by kissing it shall be limited solely to the celebrant”.

    Easter
The Easter Vigil “is to be celebrated only in Cathedral and parish churches”, the Decree states. The updated Decree clarifies that “in the ‘Baptismal Liturgy’, only the ‘Renewal of Baptismal Promises’ is to be maintained”.

    Further determinations
Wednesday’s Decree notes that “seminaries, houses of clergy, monasteries, and religious communities shall follow the indications of this decree.”

It also indicates that, unlike the official liturgical celebrations, “expressions of popular piety and processions which enrich the days of Holy Week and the Paschal Triduum can be transferred to other suitable days in the year”. An example given is 14 and 15 September (the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows). Determinations about the transfer of such devotions is left to the judgment of the Diocesan Bishop.

Indications were also sent out via a separate communication for the the Pascal Celebrations in the Eastern Catholic Churches. These indications were signed by Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for Oriental Churches, and by the Under-secretary Fr. Flavio Pace.

Lynne, Thank you for posting this.

If Pope Francis did state this I wonder why he would not at least mention repentance, penance and/or prayer. Even if he believes as many others do that what we are going through is a form of penance, I hope that he stated such. He absolutely should have said that we need to acknowledge our sin which he did but he should have stated that we need to confirm with God (normally through a priest) that we intend to sin no more. This is just my opinion of course, I just hope that he understands that this moment is a great opportunity because I believe that many people are listening to him at this time, far more than they have in the past.

For instance, last Wednesday I went to pickup a pizza down the block at my local pizza place which is now closed as of last Friday. Well, when I got there they had a picture of Pope Francis hanging on their door with a quote that he recently said which the owner felt was uplifting.

Maybe the pope's comments in regard to confession will be discussed on the World Over tonight, I hope so. I pray that Father Gerald Murray is ok too, being in NYC he was exposed to the virus over a week ago. I look forward to hearing from Raymond Arroyo and the papal posse on these matters, they are such a blessing.

I believe that Pope Francis often assumes that we don't need to be reminded of certain things and then in turn he is misquoted but this is just a small criticism that I have. I really try to be as respectful as possible, I could say a lot more but I often hold my tongue.

    I just saw this:
    upload_2020-3-26_11-14-12.png

The following is what Edward Pentin wrote about the sacrament of confession during this crisis:

    March 20, 4.10pm

In a second of two decrees, the Apostolic Penitentiary today ruled that in view of the difficulty in priests hearing confessions during the coronavirus pandemic, bishops can offer general absolution in cases of “grave necessity”.

The decree, signed by Major Penitentiary Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, notes that general absolution is usually only permitted in accordance with canon 961 – when there is an “imminent danger of death, since there is not enough time to hear the confessions of individual penitents,” or there is a “grave necessity.”

The decree then stresses in italics:

“This Apostolic Penitentiary believes that, especially in the places most affected by the pandemic contagion and until the phenomenon recedes, cases of grave necessity mentioned in can. 961, § 2 CIC [in cases of grave necessity] will occur.”

It adds that “any further specification is delegated by law to diocesan bishops, always taking into account the supreme good of the salvation of souls.”

    The decree continues:

“Should there arise a sudden need to impart sacramental absolution to several faithful together, the priest is obliged to forewarn the diocesan bishop as far as possible or, if he cannot, to inform him as soon as possible (cf. Ordo Paenitentiae, n. 32).”

Regarding individual confession, it goes on to state that “in the present pandemic emergency,” it is “up to the diocesan bishop to indicate to priests and penitents the prudent attentions to be adopted in the individual celebration of sacramental reconciliation, such as the celebration in a ventilated place outside the confessional, the adoption of a suitable distance, the use of protective masks, without prejudice to absolute attention to the safeguarding of the sacramental seal and necessary discretion.

    It adds:

“Furthermore, it is always up to the diocesan bishop to determine, in the territory of his own ecclesiastical circumscription and with regard to the level of pandemic contagion, the cases of grave necessity in which it is lawful to impart collective absolution: for example, at the entrance to hospital wards, where the infected faithful in danger of death are hospitalised, using as far as possible and with the appropriate precautions the means of amplifying the voice so that absolution may be heard.”
It adds that consideration should be given to the “need and advisability of setting up, where necessary, in agreement with the health authorities, groups of ‘extraordinary hospital chaplains,’ also on a voluntary basis and in compliance with the norms of protection from contagion, to guarantee the necessary spiritual assistance to the sick and dying.”

“Where the individual faithful find themselves in the painful impossibility of receiving sacramental absolution, it should be remembered that perfect contrition, coming from the love of God, beloved above all things, expressed by a sincere request for forgiveness (that which the penitent is at present able to express) and accompanied by votum confessionis, that is, by the firm resolution to have recourse, as soon as possible, to sacramental confession, obtains forgiveness of sins, even mortal ones (cf. CCC, no. 1452)”

Here is another example of how the news gets things wrong in regard to Catholicism. I was watching Fox News on Sunday and one of the pastors who President Trump often has at the WH, Evangelical Pastor Robert Jeffress, was being interviewed. The news caster and the pastor were talking about the fact that many churches are unable to hold mass currently with their congregation. So the news caster says to the pastor (I'm paraphrasing): unlike the Catholic faith which believes in the Transfiguration when at mass the bread is changed into Christ's body, etc. I cringed and shut it off. I suppose they were close and he just got the terms mixed up and I should be glad that the at least acknowledged Transubstantiation but at times my patience are worn a little thin, I must admit.

    Coronavirus Latest From Rome
Latest updates from the Eternal City in lockdown since March 10.
    Edward Pentin

    UPDATES (Rome time)

    March 26, 1.10pm

Despite concerns about Pope Francis’ proximity to people who might be infected with the coronavirus, he has continued with meetings today, receiving four more people in private audience at his Santa Marta residence.

They were two prelates: Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, and Archbishop Giacomo Morandi, Secretary at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

He also met two laymen: Ambassador Juan Bosco Cayota Zappettini of Uruguay who made a farewell visit, and Professor Marco Impagliazza, president of the Sant’Egidio lay community.

Yesterday, it was reported that a Vatican official living in the Santa Marta residence was hospitalised after contracting the virus.

The Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano reported today that the Pope was tested negative for the virus after news of the official's infection.

Four other people in the Vatican have also been tested positive for the virus this month.

The Pope has so far decided to stay in Santa Marta rather than be fully quarantined or moved to a separate location.

    March 25, 5.45pm

President John Magufuli of Tanzania, a practicing Catholic, is resisting a global push to stop public Masses and close churches because of the coronavirus, saying on March 22 in St. Paul’s cathedral in the Tanzanian capital Dodoma:

“I insist upon you my fellow Christians and even moslems, do not be afraid, do not stop gathering yourself to glorify God and praise Him. That is why as government we didn't close down churches or mosques. Instead, they should be always open for the people to seek refuge to God. Churches are places where people could seek the true healing, because there the True God resides. Do not to be afraid of praising and seeking God's face in the Church.”

Referring to the Eucharist, he said: "The Coronavirus cannot survive in the Eucharistic body of Christ; it will soon be burnt away. That is exactly why I did not panic while taking the Holy Communion, because I knew, with Jesus in the Eucharist I am safe. This is the time of building our faith in God.”

The issue has divided the faithful around the world with some believing it is prudent and “pro-life” to enact these restrictions while others believing worship should always be allowed with reasonable constraints and measures, and the Church should not blindly follow state precepts.

    March 25, 1.55pm

Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, has issued the following updated decree regarding indications and suggestions concerning the liturgy in view of the coronavirus. Here below is the full text:

DECREE (This can be accessed on the link above or on earthtoangel's post above, ty.)

    March 25, 12.30pm

At noon today, Pope Francis prayed the Our Father together with Christian leaders and communities around the world for an end to the coronavirus.

The Pope announced the prayer after reciting the Angelus on Sunday, saying he wanted it to “unite our voices to beseech the Lord in these days of suffering, as the world is sorely tried by the pandemic. May the Lord, good and merciful, grant the concerted prayer of His children who, with trustful hope, turn to His omnipotence.”

Before the prayer today, the Pope gave these short words which were televised from the apostolic palace:

    “Dear brothers and sisters,

Today we have gathered together, all the Christians of the world, to pray together to the Our Father, the prayer that Jesus taught us.

As confident children we turn to the Father. We do it every day, several times a day; but right now we want to beg mercy for mankind so sorrily tried by the coronavirus pandemic. And we do it together, Christians of every Church and Community, every tradition, every age, language and nation.

We pray for the sick and their families; for healthcare providers and those who help them; for civil authorities, law enforcement agencies and volunteers; for the ministers of our communities.

Today many of us celebrate the Incarnation of the Word in the womb of the Virgin Mary, when her humble and total "Here I am" was reflected the "Here I am" of the Son of God. We, too, entrust ourselves with full trust into God's hands and with one heart and one soul we pray:

    ‘Our Father…’”

At Fatima, 24 Countries Consecrated To Jesus And Mary Amid Virus Pandemic

CNA Staff, Mar 25, 2020 / 05:25 pm (CNA).- Twenty-four countries on Wednesday were consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Fatima, Portugal.

In a March 25 ceremony that included the recitation of the rosary and a litany asking the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray for the afflicted, Fatima’s bishop, Cardinal Antonio Marto, renewed the consecration of Portugal and Spain to Jesus and Mary, and added the names of twenty-four other countries.

In response to the global coronavirus pandemic, the Portuguese bishops’ conference announced last week they would reconsecrate Portugal to Christ and Mary on the evening of March 25. Shortly after the announcement, the Spanish bishops’ conference requested that their country also be consecrated in the same liturgy.

The Portuguese bishops subsequently invited the heads of other national bishops’ conferences to request that their nations be added as well.

In addition to Spain and Portugal, the other 22 countries consecrated at the request of their respective episcopal conferences are: Albania, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Slovakia, Guatemala, Hungary, India, Mexico, Moldova, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Kenya, the Dominican Republic, Romania, Tanzania, East Timor and Zimbabwe.

The cardinal also prayed for “children, the elderly and the most vulnerable,” asking the Blessed Virgin Mary to “comfort doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals, and volunteer caregivers. Strengthen families and reinforce us in citizenship and solidarity.”

During his remarks, the cardinal recalled that Saints Francisco and Jacinto Marto, shepherd children to whom an angel, and then the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in 1916 and 1917, both died amid the victims of the Spanish flu pandemic.

Cardinal Marto prayed that the saints would intercede for "so many sick people who, these days and in a profound way, experience the solitude of isolation to which they are subject."

In a statement, the bishops’ conference of Portugal noted that on 36 years ago, on March 25, 1984, Pope St. John Paul II consecrated the entire world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

In Spain, more than 3,600 people have died of the coronavirus, while in Portugal, nearly 3000 are infected and almost 50 have died. More than 21,000 people have died around the world as a result of the novel coronavrius.

  9. One analysis of the stats.

The Total Number of Coronavirus Deaths to Date in the World Still Less Than Total Number of Flu Deaths in the US This Flu Season

The governments around the world have shut down the world economy for two months due to the coronavirus. These efforts which may have economic ramifications for years to come are in response to the Wuhan coronavirus which hasn’t yet killed as many people worldwide as the flu killed in America this year.

As we have reported several times now —
the Director of the World Health Organization created an international panic when he miscalculated the coronavirus mortality rate at 3.4%.

The controversial Ethiopian politician and Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, claimed in a press conference in early March that the fatality rate for the coronavirus was many multiples that of the fatality rate of the common flu.

This egregiously false premise has led to the greatest economic panic in world history.

The problem is his statement is false. It was not accurate!
As The Gateway Pundit reported, the coronavirus mortality rate reported by the media as stated by Dr. Ghebreyesus does not include the estimated 36,000,000 people that are included in the flu calculation for those who had the flu but were not tested and confirmed. This additional 36,000,000 person estimate is absent in the coronavirus calculation.

Today the total number of deaths related to the coronavirus has increased to 22,019 worldwide as of this morning.

However, according to the weekly CDC flu report — there are 23,000 flu deaths this year in the US.

The American public is being misled by our elites. The fatalities related to the coronavirus are a fraction of those of the flu. So why the hell are the governments around the world shutting down their economies for this?

The coronovirus is not "it". But whatever "it" is, is out there stalking us while we're being set up.

This has been way overblown and in a much shorter time than most think this will fade and we'll think we've been saved, but it'll be a false dawn. This was unleashed on us for a reason. Think about who would want us to shut down all Masses, shut down our economies, cause nations to go further to the brink fiscally putting our world economy on the edge, and why would they want to do this? Look at the numbers, there's no wild spread of this outbreak, there's not people falling over dead in the streets like we were "shown" happening in China at the start. Who did this and why did they do this? What is the landscape being prepared for?

I urgently ask all to stop worrying about this (Do Not Fear, as Jesus told us so many times) but instead step back and ask why they did this? A lot of damage has been done to weaken the already stretched world financial system. One day after passing that atrocious bailout here in the U.S. which will be the knockout blow to our fiscal system, and after landing a severe punch to businesses across the U.S. and across the world, one that will lead to huge inflation setting the stage for financial collapse so we can be "rescued" by the new world financial system they magically propose as the answer, this news comes out (and this is what Father Heilman was talking about when he said he had a feeling yesterday would be a good day), this is the guy who wrote the study that all the world governments based their reactions of, now it's all "oops, I made a mistake, it's not that bad". Pray about this, why did they do this? https://www.dailywire.com/news/epid...I218OGv1yT6Ki8HtoiqN2ON5NbSMioMJggSHlNa1DOOqY

"Epidemiologist Neil Ferguson, who created the highly-cited Imperial College London coronavirus model, which has been cited by organizations like The New York Times and has been instrumental in governmental policy decision-making, offered a massive revision to his model on Wednesday.

Ferguson’s model projected 2.2 million dead people in the United States and 500,000 in the U.K. from COVID-19 if no action were taken to slow the virus and blunt its curve.

However, after just one day of ordered lockdowns in the U.K., Ferguson has changed his tune, revealing that far more people likely have the virus than his team figured. Now, the epidemiologist predicts, hospitals will be just fine taking on COVID-19 patients and estimates 20,000 or far fewer people will die from the virus itself or from its agitation of other ailments.

Ferguson thus dropped his prediction from 500,000 dead to 20,000."

  15. But with a projected death rate of this year's annual flu of over 50,000 deaths w/ millions infected must also be spreading....but "crickets" about those folks....because it couldn't be used for same motivation??

As of January 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting that flu activity is high across the United States.

So far this season, the flu is tracking as many as:

    Illnesses: 54 million

    Deaths: 59,000

It all strikes me as either, at best, criminal negligence on the part of the Chinese Communists, or, worst-case interpretation, a deliberate biological attack on the West. There will be plenty of time to investigate these matters when things settle down. However, if I was a native of Northern Italy, I doubt I'd consider it over-blown.

I'm most disgusted at the likes of the bishops of England and Wales who actually went beyond the official decrees of the authorities and actually closed all churches, with Archbishop Nichols declaring their remaining open as not 'essential'. This is what our own bishops think of Our Lord in the Tabernacle. There is no necessity for a third party to suppress Christianity, when clericalism of the worst kind does it for them.

Did you read the quote from the expert in Italy who said that their numbers reported are wildly inflated? His estimate was that only 12% of the deaths were actually due to the virus. As the expert in the article that I posted above states, now he estimates 20,000 deaths in the UK due to this and of those half of them (10,000) would be people who were going to pass anyway "of natural causes" anyway.

This has all been done to set the stage. Set the stage for what, is the question we all need ponder deeply as that is the real thing we should all watch out for, why did they do this, what did they prepare the landscape for?
