Putin knows that, if he appears to be the loser in this 'special operation', he is going to wind up imprisoned or dead (probably the latter). If, as appears likely, he is not going to succeed in the short/medium term he has nothing to lose personally by employing the most extreme means available to him. He hopes to frighten the west into withdrawing support by extreme threats already made and, if that fails, he has absolutely nothing to lose (personally) by unleashing his ultimate weapons. The only hope is that the army and/or his wiser underlings decide that 'enough is enough' and arranges for him to 'have an accident'. Russia, which already had a serious demographic problem, has suffered a loss of around 1,500,000 from the young and more educated workforce/consumer base in the last few months (500,000 emigrated immediately following the initiation of the 'special operation', 700,000 fled in 4 weeks when mobilisation was announced and 300,000 - at least - have been conscripted/mobilised, in addition, an unknown number are in hiding and have left their jobs for fear of mobilisation). Russia has ceased publishing economic stats. but many of the basics can be gleaned from other sources and it shows that economic activity has fallen by around 40% since February, a fall which I believe is unprecedented in any developed economy in history and which means that mass unemployment with attendant hunger etc. and bankruptcies are about to commence. Putin needs to ratchet up the anti-western rhetoric to persuade the Russians that it is all the fault of others and that the 'special operation' is not the cause but is the solution.

Further to the above, a Russian TV propagandist called Anton Krasovsky recently called for Ukrainian children who declined to admit that they are Russians to be burnt to death or drowned once victory is achieved. This was a recording and not live TV which means that someone actually authorised these ravings to be broadcast to the Russian nation. Now, normally, the pro-war propagandists are just allowed to say what they will as long as it supports the 'special operation' but apparently this particular suggestion didn't go down too well even with a normally compliant Russian audiences so he has been sacked. Interestingly, this 'journalist' is apparently known to be a homosexual and to be HIV positive which makes the pretended 'anti-gay' stance of the Kremlin something of a joke - they don't mind homosexuals who support the war.
