Earthquake today LIVE: Earthquakes strike California, Alaska, Philippines and Japan today

EARTHQUAKES are not an uncommon occurrence in areas of seismic activity - 34 have been reported today alone. Here is the latest news and live updates.

The biggest quake to strike today was a magnitude 5.0, in Kainantu, Papua New Guinea, neighbouring the island archipelago Indonesia which is still reeling from a devastating earthquake in August.

Today's quake struck deep below the Earth’s surface, some 80 miles deep, meaning the impact to the surface was minimal.

Indonesia itself saw a quake near Abepura, registering at 4.6, which was too deep to wreak havoc.

Japan, which has seen a spate of deadly natural events this year, has had two quakes today, the biggest registering at 4.4, east of Tomakomai.

September 25 3.30pm BST update: A cluster of earthquakes hit Puerto Rico

A magnitude 3.1 earthquake hit 85km north-northwest of San Antonio, Puerto Rico in the early hours of this morning.

This was preceded by a magnitude 2.7 quake close to Hatillo, Puerto Rico at 3am this morning.

Later on in the morning, another 2.7 struck 70km north of Culebra, Puerto Rico.

September 25 7.30am BST update: USA experiences two new earthquakes

There is fresh tremor activity in the United States this morning with two new earthquakes hitting California and Oklahoma.

The newest quakes have been of little concern in the central US, as the highest monitored was Oklahoma's with a magnitude of 2.9.

However, as we journey out towards Alaska, the earthquakes begin to gather more power.

Alaska alone has seen a collection of eight new earthquakes today, the largest of which was a magnitude 3.7 southwest of Kaktovik.

The picture is much the same over the border, as Mexico has received a 4.4 magnitude earthquake today just southwest of Marquelia.

South East Asia has seen the most activity this morning, with a larger number of intermediate earthquakes measuring over 4.0 magnitude.

Japan's Tomakomai region saw tremors of 4.4 magnitude, and the Philippines island of San Isidro saw the strongest with 4.8.

And a 4.8-magnitude quake struck 215km ENE of Port Mathurin, Mauritius.

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake also struck 292km SSW of Severo-Kuril'sk, Russia at 8.53am UTC.

The strongest earthquake of the day so far landed southwest off the coast of South America, southwest of the Sandwich Islands.

These islands saw a large 5.4 magnitude quke at an intersection of two different tectonic plate boundaries, the South America and Scotia plates.

The territory of the Sandwich Islands has a population of 30, and 3.33 percent have a 65 percent chance of fatality.

The United States Geographical Survey (USGS) has predicted there is a 65 percent chance one person will die, and a 30 percent chance 10 people may die.

Population at the Sandwich Islands is not set in stone, as there are no official permanent residents, so fatality rates are subject to change.

    September 24 earthquakes

Stateside, Alaska has seen a total of eight tremors today, though none of them big enough to cause any damage, the strongest registering at 3.3 just near Tok.

Earthquake-prone California has seen two in the past 24 hours, but again only small ones, with the biggest only 2.8 near Pinnacles.

So what do all these areas have in common?

These areas all form part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a massive horseshoe shape of seismic activity encircling the Pacific Basin.

What is the Ring of Fire?

About 90 percent of all earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire, which is dotted with 75 percent of all the active volcanoes on earth.

A string of 452 volcanoes stretches from the southern tip of South America, up the West Coast of the Americas, across the Bering Strait, down through Japan and into New Zealand.

In total, the ring forms a 25,000 mile arc from the boundary of the Pacific Plate, to the Cocos and Nazca Plates that line the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

The ring is the result of tectonic plates - huge slabs of the earth’s crust which fit together like a puzzle to make up the earth’s surface.

The plates are not fixed, but constantly moving on top of a layer of solid and molten (liquid) rock, called the earth’s mantle.

Sometimes, these plates collide, move apart, or slide against each other, which results in an earthquake.

The volcanoes form when one plate is pushed under another into the mantle (through a process known as subduction), releasing pressure and causing the molten rock to push up through the earth.

The Ring of Fire is a result of the earth’s oceanic plates and continental plates interacting, which has led to the massive activity which is associated with the area.

    What is the ‘Big One’?
Around times of increased seismic activity, talk of the 'Big One' often increases.

The Big One is a hypothetical earthquake of a magnitude 8.0 or greater.

The Big One, according to the hypothesis, will occur along the San Andreas Fault, a 750-mile-long tectonic boundary through California.

A study published in 2006 in the journal Nature found the San Andreas fault has reached a sufficient stress level for an earthquake of magnitude greater than 7.0 to occur.

The paper concluded: “The information available suggests that the fault is ready for the next big earthquake but exactly when the triggering will happen and when the earthquake will occur we cannot tell.

“It could be tomorrow or it could be 10 years or more from now.”

Indonesian city of Palu hit by tsunami after strong quake: Official

    Asia
JAKARTA: The Indonesian city of Palu on the island of Sulawesi was on Friday (Sep 28) slammed by waves from a tsunami set off by a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake that destroyed buildings and sent panicked residents fleeing.

"A tsunami has happened in Palu," said Rahmat Triyono, head of the disaster agency's earthquake and tsunami division. Palu is nearly 80km from the quake's epicentre. The city of about 350,000 residents is the capital of central Sulawesi province.

Officials added that the waves were up to two metres high and that waters have since receded.

There have been no reports of deaths so far.

However, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said it was having difficulties reaching some authorities in Palu and in the fishing town of Donggala.

Video circulating online showed what appears to be small restaurants being swept away by the waves.

Dramatic footage filmed from the top floor of a parking ramp spiral in Palu showed a churning wall of whitewater mow down several buildings and inundate a large mosque.

The quake hit just off central Sulawesi at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometres just before 6pm local time, the US Geological Survey said.

It struck hours after a smaller jolt killed at least one person in the same part of the Southeast Asian archipelago.

People living hundreds of kilometres from the epicentre reported feeling the massive shake, which was a higher magnitude than the series of quakes that killed hundreds on the island of Lombok in August.

"There are reports that many buildings collapsed in the earthquake," national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement.

"Residents panicked and scattered out of their homes."

Pictures supplied by the agency showed a badly damaged shopping mall in Palu where at least one floor had collapsed onto the storey below.

Other pictures showed major damage to buildings, with rubble strewn about the road and large cracks running through pavements.

Long traffic jams were seen in some parts of the region as terrified residents packed into cars, trucks and motorbikes to flee to higher ground following the tsunami warning.

Search and rescue teams have been dispatched to hard-hit areas, Nugroho said.

The national search and rescue agency will deploy a large ship and helicopters to aid with the operation, said agency chief Muhammad Syaugi, adding that he had not been able to contact his team in Palu.

Palu's main airport was closed around 7.30pm local time, with authorities saying it would not open for 24 hours.

In 2004, an earthquake off the northern Indonesian island of Sumatra triggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean, killing 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.

As I watched the pictures and video's of this natural disaster, my heart goes out to the people there. One day soon we will all suffer our own natural and man-made calamities. I pray we can see everything in Divine Will, as Jesus did in his own sufferings. The global purification is coming, as heaven's many prophecies have foretold. Prepare! Keep your eye's on the Era of Peace promised and don't look back as the Israelite's did and were denied entering into the promised land. All accept two, out of over 600,000, Caleb and Joshua.

  8. Drone footage shows Indonesia tsunami devastation after 10ft wave wipes out a beach festival - sweeping away partygoers, obliterating two towns killing 832

The devastating impact of a huge tsunami in the Indonesian city of Palu has been revealed in chilling aerial photographs - in a natural disaster estimated to have killed 832 people.

The tsunami, which was triggered after a magnitude-7.5 earthquake, ripped through the Pacific Ring of Fire and crashed into the Palu at 500mph, causing widespread destruction.

Indonesian media, citing the national disaster agency, said Saturday that a further 540 people were injured in Palu City alone, on the the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

Fears are mounting for the the fishing town of Donggala, which was closer to the epicentre of the quake, but which rescuers have not been able to reach. The town of Mamuju was also severely affected but currently impossible to access due to damaged roads and disrupted telecommunications.

Gun-toting action man Vladimir Putin cuddles a leopard and poses topless with a fish in his latest calendar

The Russian strongman has been snapped in an array of manly poses for the latest version of his cult calendar

VLADIMIR Putin’s hotly anticipated new calendar has hit the shelves in Russia and online.

The strongman leader can be seen in a raft of poses, several of them in his trademark topless style.

    ........
Putin is shown flaunting his action man image, shooting, horse riding and fishing.

Others see the president with a raft of cuddly animals including as snow leopard cub and a dog.

One particularly bizarre image shows a shirtless Vlad taking a dip in Lake Seliger, just north of Moscow, as three Russian orthodox priests look on holding religious icons.

The ceremony is apparently part of the celebration of Epiphany on January 6.

Putin’s yearly calendars have developed something of a cult following around the world over the last few years.

The Russian leader is always pictured doing a raft of “manly” activities but also pictured with cuddly animals.

It appears the former KGB agent believes that this helps him exude a strong but gentle image to the people of Russia.

Emblazoned across the front of this year’s calendar is a quote from Putin saying: “I admire Russian Women!

    What a catch

"New Fox" Solidifies Executive Roster With Lachlan Murdoch At the Top

The company being spun off from 21st Century Fox in connection with the merger will simply go by "Fox."
As 21st Century Fox prepares to sell off most of its assets to the Walt Disney Company, its future is coming into focus. Rupert Murdoch’s media giant has firmed up how much of its executive roster will look, post-merger, and announced that those properties left behind in the merger will simply be known as "Fox."

Lachlan Murdoch will serve as the chairman and CEO of this Fox, overseeing a portfolio that includes Fox Sports, Fox Broadcasting Network, Fox News and the Fox Business Network. Major appointments announced.

........“We are fortunate to be able to continue working with these enormously talented executives who have helped make our businesses the incredible successes they are today,” said Lachlan Murdoch. “Collectively they bring to Fox the vision, entrepreneurial spirit and proven track records to position Fox to seize future opportunities for its leading and deeply resonant brands across sports, news and entertainment.”

It will be interesting to see if any more liberal control over the business portion will cause such as Lou Dobbs, Charles Payne, Maria Bartiromo, and some others to go elsewhere. But probably they'll mix in enough characters like Neil Cavuto and his buddy, Trump despiser, Charlie Gasperino, to still keep the lib influence there.

Yes, addressed to Secretary Mattis and Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral John Richardson. That would be called an assassination attempt if the fake news were being honest.

    https://americanmilitarynews.com/2018/10/ricin-found-in-mail-sent-to-pentagon-report/

Pentagon officials revealed that two items collected in the building’s mail contained ricin.

The Pentagon mail screening center identified two suspicious items addressed to Defense Secretary James Mattis and to Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral John Richardson. The envelopes underwent testing and were confirmed to contain ricin, according to a CNN report Tuesday.

“On Monday, the Pentagon Force Protection Agency detected a suspicious substance during mail screening at the Pentagon’s remote screening facility. The envelopes were taken by the FBI this morning for further analysis,” said Col. Rob Manning, a Pentagon spokesman, according to the Washington Examiner.

“All USPS mail received at the Pentagon mail screening facility yesterday is currently under quarantine and poses no threat to Pentagon personnel,” Manning added.

The FBI and Pentagon Force Protection responded to the incident. The FBI is conducting additional testing on the envelopes.

“On Tuesday, October, 2, 2018, in coordination with the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, FBI Special Agents took possession of two suspicious envelopes that had been screened at the Pentagon mail facility. Those envelopes are currently undergoing further testing,” the FBI said in a statement.

The mail screening center is a separate facility from the Pentagon on the same campus. The facility itself was shut down and all mail placed in quarantine.

No injuries were reported so far.

Ricin is a poisonous substance found naturally in castor beans. Ingestion of ricin can lead to internal bleeding and organ failure. It has been used in past terror attacks due to its high toxicity and ease of use due to coming in forms from powder to mist.

The Pentagon’s mail processing facility is an underground facility built after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks to screen all mail sent to the Pentagon.

    The Growing Mob
Posted on October 2, 2018 by Mark

    Ocean Avenue by phyzer

First published March 20th, 2015. The liturgical texts for the referenced readings that day are here.

THERE is a new sign of the times emerging. Like a wave reaching the shore that grows and grows until it becomes a huge tsunami, so too, there is a growing mob mentality toward the Church and freedom of speech. It was ten years ago that I wrote a warning of the coming persecution. [1] And now it’s here, on Western shores.

For the zeitgeist has shifted; there is a growing boldness and intolerance sweeping through the courts, flooding the media, and spilling out onto the streets. Yes, the time is right to silence the Church. These sentiments have existed for some time now, decades even. But what is new is that they have gained the power of the mob, and when it reaches this stage, the anger and intolerance begin to move very fast.

Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. He professes to have knowledge of God and styles himself a child of the LORD. To us he is the censure of our thoughts; merely to see him is a hardship for us, because his life is not like that of others, and different are his ways. (First reading)

Jesus said if the world hated Him, then it will hate us. [2] Why? Because Jesus is the “light of the world”, [3] but then He also says of us: “You are the light of the world”. [4] That light is both our witness and the truth we proclaim. And…

…this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. (John 3:19)

You see, we carry no ordinary light. The light of the Christian is really the very presence of God within, a presence that pierces the heart, enlightens the conscience, [5] and calls others to the right path. As Pope Benedict said:

The Church… intends to continue to raise her voice in defense of mankind, even when policies of States and the majority of public opinion moves in the opposite direction. Truth, indeed, draws strength from itself and not from the amount of consent it arouses. —POPE BENEDICT XVI, Vatican, March 20, 2006

The strength of truth is that its source is Christ Himself. [6] And thus, Jesus says to the people who tried to pretend that He was not the Messiah, tried to pretend that they did not recognize the truth:

You know me and also know where I am from. (Today’s Gospel)

Therefore, it is ultimately Jesus-in-us whom they persecute:

He judges us debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things impure. He calls blest the destiny of the just and boasts that God is his Father. (First reading)

Brothers and sisters, long have been the warnings to prepare for the hour that is now upon the Church, the hour of her “final confrontation” with the spirit of this age. The mobs have lit their torches and raised their pitchforks… but Jesus tells you to raise your eyes.

…when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. (Luke 21:28)

He will be our help, He will be our hope, and He will be our deliverer. What groom wouldn’t be for his bride?

When the just cry out, the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them… Many are the troubles of the just man, but out of them all the LORD delivers him. (Today’s Psalm)
