That is insightful I think. It is also the way that Judaism worked close to the time of Jesus from what I've been told. Jesus, perhaps tongue and cheek, plays on this theme in some incidents with Gentiles doesn't he (eg Mt 15:27)? But that only works if you are in a winner take all position it seems to me. When different religions of similar attitude and strength are vying for dominance both end up losing. As M Gandhi put it, "there's just enough religion for people to hate each other but not enough to love." That is the beauty of the Christian ethic of "Catholicism" I believe. Hi Heidi, I too used to think that the devil disguised himself as an angel of light and spoke to Mohammed telling Mohammad that he was St Gabriel. But I really believe that the devil would not have wanted the pagans to stop their sacrifice of children to pagan gods, nor would he have wanted them knowing that there is only one God and nor would he have given the information about the Holiness and position of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Heaven. So I now think originally St Gabriel must have instructed Muhammad on some truths however satan hijacked the proceedings just like he has attempted to do right down through Christian history and has succeeded on many occasions causing fractions and heresies in the church.
That seems very plausible. There is much evidence in the Koran that Islam was originally going to be a form of Christianity, but the devil managed to elbow his way in very early. This underlying proto-Christianity seems to be generating many conversions. I recently read "A Wind In The House Of Islam" by David Garrison which describes this and many other paths to conversion in detail. It is written from a Protestant but orthodox Christian point of view-one doesn't find heterodox liberals risking martyrdom-and the emphasis is on conversions to Christ himself, however there are surely similar phenomena on the Catholic side with Our Lady playing a huge role.
I'm flabbergasted that anyone would believe that the Angel Gabriel appeared to Muhammed. I thought it was more or less settled that he was influenced by an uncle who followed the Arian heresy. His "visions" sound more like hallucinations from something he smoked.
The Arianism of the uncle is a plausible source, also. Still, there appear to have been visions of some kind. Is it possible for a genuine (even if so only at the beginning) vision to be misinterpreted by the recipient?
I must admit I know zero about Muhammad's uncle. Before the internet was available, like a hundred years ago, I decided to read the Koran with the understanding that St Gabriel had appeared to him (I decided that I would investigate and explore it). I was not privy to any other pertinent information. I did this in the hope that I could get an insight into Muhammads seemingly stunted if not irrational interpretations and conclusions after the appearance of St Gabriel. I wanted to understand how he arrived at his conclusions regarding God but more especially in regards to Jesus, the ManGod, the Incarnate Son of God and the son of the Ever Virgin, the Immaculately concieved Mary, as Muhammad himself states, sits beside God in heaven. Hence my deductions over the years.

That seems the most believable scenario and St John was a near contemporary and likely to be close enough to actual witness accounts of events. It is revealing to get a perspective from the beginning of this heresy. The present (allegedly) large number of adherents perhaps lends an importance and dignity to this religion that it doesn't objectively deserve.

I I think this concludes the discussion of where Islam originated. Isn't it extraordinary how much this religion seems to share with secularism? Both ideologies seem to hate the weak.
