During the Beatification Mass of Blessed Fr. Francis Xavier Trương Bửu Diệp — a heroic Vietnamese priest martyred in 1946 for protecting his flock — Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle delivered a stirring call to the Church:

“A true martyr helps a confused world discover the truth of Jesus.”

Fr. Diệp, a dedicated parish priest, gave his life in exchange for the freedom of 70 others during post-WWII violence. He chose to stay with his people rather than flee, embodying the Good Shepherd.

Cardinal Tagle emphasized that martyrs are missionaries par excellence, bearing witness to Christ even unto death. He challenged us:

Will we spread fake news or the teachings of Jesus?
Seek worldly success or the charity and simplicity of Christ?
Rely on earthly wealth and fame, or place our hope only in Jesus and His Kingdom?

In a world full of confusion, division, and falsehood, we are called to be bearers of truth, shining the light of Christ through charity, justice, and courageous love — just like Blessed Fr. Diệp.

Blessed Francis Xavier Trương Bửu Diệp, pray for us! Help us choose Jesus always.

This beatification is a beautiful reminder for all of us to live as true disciples. What choice will you make today to witness to Christ?"

There are so many heroic Catholics among the Vietnamese people. I am very devoted to a Vietnamese Cardinal who was held prisoner and persecuted right up until his death.
