You should listen to this guy on Desert Island Discs, Jayne. His name is TIdje Tham and he originally came from the Ivory Coast. He talks a little about his life, especially about his father. His father was imprisoned in an illegal coup out there and he seems to have been a very saintly man. Far from feeling bitter he notes that prison made him a much better person. He told his children that suffering makes us greater. The very opposite of bitterenss.
