The Wonderful Origin of the Rosary In this month of the Rosary, let us return to the origins of the Rosary. In this captivating story, we discover how this powerful weapon was given to us by Heaven… When Evil seems to Triumph In the heart of the 13th century, in the sunny but troubled lands of Languedoc (southern France), a shadow was cast over the Catholic Church. Cathar heretics who rejected the material world as the work of the devil, sowed doubt and division among the faithful. They preached extreme austerity, denying the sacraments and the divinity of Christ, and their ideas spread like wildfire through the dry vineyards of southern France. Alarmed local bishops called for help, but temporal weapons—crusades and inquisitions—were not enough to extinguish this spiritual flame. What was needed was a warrior of the faith, a man armed not with a sword, but with the word of God. Souls beyond salvation? Then came Dominic de Guzmán, a Spanish priest with a fiery gaze and a heart inflamed with the love of God. Born in Castile and raised in piety, Dominic had already renounced worldly honors to embrace a life of poverty and preaching. In 1203, during a diplomatic trip, he traveled through the south of France and was struck by the virulence of heresy. “How can these souls be saved if they are not shown the light?” he wondered. Instead of fleeing, he chose to stay. Alone, or almost alone, he settled in a humble convent, surrounded by a few faithful companions. Day after day, he walked the dusty roads, preaching in villages, debating with the Cathars under the hundred-year-old olive trees. His words were like arrows: clear, incisive, imbued with the Gospels. But the heretics, hardened by their dualistic beliefs, resisted. Conversions were rare, and Dominic, exhausted, felt the weight of failure bearing down on his shoulders. A dazzling Encounter One Summer night in 1214, as the moon bathed the hills in silvery light, Dominic withdrew to a small, isolated chapel to pray. The stars twinkled like divine promises, but his soul was in torment. Kneeling on the cold floor, he implored Heaven: “Lord, give me a weapon to defeat this heresy! May Your Mother, the Immaculate Virgin, intercede for these lost souls!” Hours passed in oppressive silence. Suddenly, a heavenly light filled the chapel, softer than dawn and brighter than the sun. In the midst of this glory appeared the Blessed Virgin Mary, wrapped in a blue mantle, a crown of stars on her head. She held in her hands a Rosary with sparkling beads, that string of mystical roses, each bead representing a Hail Mary, intertwined with Our Fathers and meditations on the mysteries of Christ’s life. « Here is the weapon you are asking for » “My dear son Dominic,” she said in a voice as melodious as an angelic hymn, “here is the weapon you are asking for. The Rosary is a golden chain that binds hearts to God. Pray it fervently, teach it to the faithful, and it will conquer heresy as light dispels darkness. Meditate on the joys, sorrows, and glories of my Son, and souls will return to the truth. “ Moved to tears, Dominic stretched out his hands, and the Blessed Virgin placed the Rosary between his trembling fingers. A supernatural peace filled him, as if the whole of Heaven had descended upon earth. At that moment, he understood: it was not by the force of arguments alone, but by Marian prayer, repeated like the rhythm of the heart, that the barriers would fall. The miracle of the Rosary The next day, reinvigorated, Dominic resumed his mission with renewed zeal. He founded the Order of Preachers, which proclaimed the truth against error. Wherever he went, he taught the Rosary: to peasants in the fields, to nobles in their castles, to repentant heretics. Miracles followed with mass conversions! The heretics, touched by this simple and powerful devotion, abandoned their errors. The Rosary became the peaceful weapon of the Church, a bulwark against evil, spread by the Dominicans throughout the world. https://www.chapeletperpetuelpourle...gn=news-of-the-perpetual-rosary-for-the-world
Praying For Our Prodigals has this: October is the month of the Rosary. Therefore, this month I'm going to be sharing stories that hopefully will be new to you and will encourage you to pray the Rosary daily for the conversion of your loved ones. This week's story comes directly from The Secret of the Rosary by St. Louis de Montfort. "Whatever you do, do not be like a certain pious but self-willed lady in Rome, so often referred to when speaking about the Rosary. She was so devout and so fervent that she put to shame by her holy life, even the strictest religious in the Church. Having decided to ask Saint Dominic's advice about her spiritual life she asked him to hear her confession. For penance he gave her one whole Rosary to say and advised her to say it every day. She said that she had no time to say it, excusing herself on the grounds that she made the Stations of Rome (a devotion consisting of visiting churches in Rome and saying specific prayers) every day, that she wore sack-cloth and also a hair shirt, that she gave herself the discipline several times a week, that she carried out so many other penances and fasted so much. Saint Dominic urged her over and over again to take his advice and say the Rosary, but she would not hear of it. She left the confessional, horrified at the tactics of this new spiritual director who had tried so hard to persuade her to take on a devotion that was not at all to her liking. Later on when she was in prayer she fell into ecstasy and had a vision of her soul appearing before Our Lord's Judgement Seat. Saint Michael put all her penances and other prayers onto one balance of the scales and all her sins and imperfections onto the other. The tray of her good works was greatly outweighed by that of her sins and imperfections. Filled with terror she cried for mercy, imploring the help of the Blessed Virgin, her gracious Advocate, who took the one and only Rosary that she had said for her penance and dropped it onto the tray of her good works. This one Rosary was so heavy that it weighed more than all her sins as well as all her good works. Our Lady then reproved her for having refused to follow the counsel of her servant Dominic and for not saying the Rosary every day. As soon as she came to herself she rushed and threw herself at the feet of Saint Dominic and told him all that had happened, begged his forgiveness for her unbelief and promised to say the Rosary faithfully every day. By this means she rose to Christian perfection and finally to the glory of everlasting life. You who are people of prayer - learn from this how tremendous is the power, the value, and the importance of this devotion of the Most Holy Rosary when it is said together with mediation on the mysteries. Few saints have reached the same heights of prayer as Saint Mary Magdalene who was lifted up to Heaven each day by angels, and who had had the privilege of learning at the feet of Our Lord Himself and His Blessed Mother. yet one day when she asked God to show her a sure way of advancing in His love and of arriving at the height of perfection, He sent Saint Michael the Archangel to tell her, on His behalf, that there was no other way for her to arrive at perfection than to meditate on Our Lord's passion. So he placed a cross in the front of her cave and told her to pray before it, contemplating the Sorrowful Mysteries which she had seen take place with her own eyes. The example of Saint Francis de Sales, the great spiritual director of his time, should spur you on to join the holy confraternity of the Rosary, since, great saint that he was, he bound himself by oath to say the whole Rosary every single day as long as he lived. Saint Charles Borromeo said it every day also and strongly recommended the devotion to his priests and to ecclesiastics in the seminaries and also to all his people. Saint Pius V, one of the greatest Popes who have ever ruled the Church said the Rosary every day. Saint Thomas of Villanova , Archbishop of Valence, Saint Ignatius, Saint Francis Xavier, Saint Francis Borgia, Saint Theresa, and Saint Philip Neri as well as many other great men whom I have not mentioned were deeply devoted to the Holy Rosary.
