Thank you Basto for reminding those who need reminding what suffering is being experienced by millions of innocents because of one man's ambitions to enter the history books as some sort of saviour of the Russian empire. Happily, his plans have been thwarted so far due to the bravery of the Ukrainian people and (to a much lesser extent) by the willingness of Western governments to bear some financial pain and provision of arms to assist them in their fight for their country and their liberty. Bravo.

While people are naturally excited at the forthcoming consecration, they are perhaps forgetting the immediate cause of that event, namely the request of the Ukrainian bishops in the face of the onslaught on their country, their innocent people and their freedoms.

I think that we can be fairly sure that Francis, who seems for all his faults to be sensitive to the suffering of refugees and war victims, phoned Kirill in Moscow asking him to jointly beg Putin for mercy on the Ukrainian people and being 'brushed off' and lectured by that rabid nationalist who is on record as strongly supporting the invasion even after its sorry results in terms of loss of life and property and the fleeing of millions. I imagine that when Francis put the phone down he realised that he had nothing to lose by acceding to the bishops' request. If Kirill were a more Christian prelate, we might not be in this happier position.
