Google "Biosolids" you wi0l see on the wiki page that the sewage is "usually" treated. I assure you that it is not always the case. Know also that very many farmers use cow manure strait from the barn ..no real difference unless the manure is composted correctly before it is used. Dont eat the outer part of any vegi if practical, and wash all.
Though it depends on the locality if spreading it is allowed... a great deal of the produce sold in the USA comes from south of the border.
I don't know how true this is, but it made sense to me. When we make compost, typically we use a mix of carbon sources (dry leaves, wood chips, paper) along with nitrogen sources (manure, vegetable/fruit scraps/coffee ground, lawn cuttings). That fungus feed off of the carbon sources while bacteria feed off of the nitrogen sources. That in compost there should be a 50/50 balance between bacteria and fungus as they are symbiotic. So when fresh manure is the only thing being spread on a field, it is imbalanced in favor of the bacteria, so it throws the whole ecosystem off which leads to disease. Typically, no where in nature will we find huge amounts of manure (maybe islands where birds are, caves with bats). Normally it is spread all over the place in balance with what plants shed.
