From Totus Tuus page: "Saint Mark Ji Tianxiang was a Chinese Catholic doctor who served the poor for free. When he developed a severe stomach illness, he treated himself with opium — the common medicine of his time — and soon became addicted. For 30 years he fought the addiction. He went to confession regularly, but his priest, misunderstanding the nature of addiction, refused him absolution. The priest believed Mark lacked a firm purpose of amendment because he kept falling into the same sin. Denied the sacraments for three decades, Mark Ji did not leave the Church. He continued attending Mass faithfully. He prayed. He remained a practicing Catholic even when he could not receive Holy Communion. And he asked God for the grace to die a martyr. His prayer was answered. During the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, he was arrested for his faith. In prison, without access to opium, he endured the final agony of withdrawal. On July 7, 1900, he was beheaded rather than renounce Christ. He was canonized in 2000 by St. John Paul II among the Chinese Martyrs. Today he is invoked as a patron for those struggling with addiction and for their families. His life reminds us that holiness is not the absence of struggle. It is the refusal to stop turning toward God — even when the path is long, painful, and misunderstood. Saint Mark Ji Tianxiang, pray for all who battle addiction and for those who walk with them."
