Being a veteran of snow removal from using snowblowers, shovels, or Grandpa Murray's plow (it died 2 years back), I have to say this is truly weird. Lake effect snow is universally light snow with a low water content. Storms that come up the coast usually contain snow with a higher water content and is heavier. Anyway, with the large storm that recently was dumped on us, I was shoveling a path to the barn to ease the hauling of sleds with wood to feed our wood stove. But I have to say each full shovel of snow must weigh close to 10 pounds. No kidding! What gives? I immediately thought someone is seeding the clouds. But if so, with what?
Yikes. Terry you should absolutely not be shoveling heavy snow. It's put a strain on your heart and your back. The strange wetness of it is curious. Maybe it should be analyzed. I'm afraid i don't trust anything these days. Even the weather.
We got about 9”. My 4x4 27hp diesel tractor was low on hydraulic fluid and we couldn’t find the jug to top it off until late last night. So I wasn’t able to plow our quarter mile long straight gravel driveway till then. When I did finally plow it (using the front loader bucket) I wasn’t able to remove much snow at all. I just couldn’t get it to push or pull the snow off the driveway, it had packed down so hard so quickly. It left our driveway a real mess.
Brian, was that storm from the coast or did it come in from the west? I fear winter might put a damper on your flying.
Mario, I might try to answer. Our area of the Mid Atlantic gets more snow when the cold air is in place and the storms come from the south. That seems to be what happened this past Monday. Correct me, Brian, if I am wrong.
Yes, I stopped after clearing about 25 feet. Yesterday I cleared about 25 feet from the back door to Mary's shrine, but the snow was noticeably lighter. I remain puzzled. I'll see how things are tomorrow. Don't worry, you and Geralyn must be twins! It's about 30 yards from the house to the barn. I have enough wood on the back porch to get me through tomorrow.
This one came in from the west, I think. It wasn’t a “nor’easter” which picks up moisture over the east coast before landfall. I won’t be done with flight training or completing the rebuild on my gyro any time soon. I’ll probably finish the gyro well before my flight training. The gyro club in North Carolina is going to do the thorough inspection and probably take it for its first flight for me, possibly in February or March.
A very busy day with homily prep; only received an additional 2 inches. Path to the barn finished so there will be no issues as far as wood is concerned. Good thing as I just brought in the last of the wood from the back porch. Best of all, Geralyn and I spent the day together for the most part. Also, please pray for my Pastor who is "under the weather"! Thank you again for your concern miker and Ann.
"For the time being" didn't last too long. Today, a lake effect band which was to sit over us for a few hours, stayed around and dumped 2 more feet of snow on us. 'Tis like the winters of the last decade. The Town plows are clipping the banks on every road they're clearing now. We're keeping the grandkids happy by sending pics of how high the banks have gotten and how short Grandpa and Grandma look. I can't imagine how deep the snow is up on the Tug Hill! Our Lady of the Snows, pray for us!
oh, my! This winter is very reminiscent of the old days here, too. Only we are getting older,too. Tug Hill? You have plenty to be dealing with I know what you mean about the snow banks. Our shopping center had one that looked to me about 30 ft. tall. I remember those from 1961. Very old days. Junior high. They don't melt quickly, either. I like your sense of humor.
You are in the epicenter of snow in upstate NY. I told you i think of my college roommate from Oswego. They literally could not get out of their house. They had to lower her little brother down from an upstairs window so he could dig out the front door.
Please send some snow my way as I only used my snowblower once last year and it's sitting idle so far this year.
Not much snow last night. But it is cold. Right now it's 2° f. And with the wind chill it's -18° f. I think that's like -27 in Celsius. I've experienced worse,, but this is the coldest so far this winter.
